Nissan Chromolly Axle Shafts
180sx replied to SteeevO's topic in Solid Axle Swaps, Hardcore Custom Fab
Hmmm...are the X/frontier shafts the same length? edit: according to courtesy, 38162 is the part number for the D22 and R50 H233B axle shafts...Answers my question. Jose -
Well, VQ's aren't cheap and are a high demand engine. So according to wikipedia (god help me) the only real difference between the 3.5 nad 4.0 is the stroke. 81.4mm for the 3.5 and 92.0mm for the 4.0. Plus it has some other electronic gizmos. So I would say just use a 3.5 as a donor for the outside bits and drop the 4.0 in it's place. It's rated at 30more HP and at minimun 20 more lb-ft of torque. You would probably have to swap the heads though, since the 4.0 has continuous VVT. Only thing is I haven't seen anyone use the 4.0 for any other application. If it was good, you'd think you'd see more 350Z's with them in. I wonder... Jose

It's really not that much work. It's more about trying to get everything to fit that would take time. This is probably why you still have newbie under your user name. I can get 100+ HP on a honda D16 with twin turbo's if I wanted to. Hell, 1 Garret GT28RS turbo running 1 Bar (thats 14psi FYI) of boost will net me 150HP on my VG33E. What do you want? Out of all the possibilities, no one has really discussed this topic. I wonder if the sub frames are the same? Then this VQ40 idea might really work. Throw an HKS Rotrex supercharger on it and just be silly stupid all day long!! Jose

BUT! If you're planning on just lifting the pathy 2", you don't need to worry about the length of your links. Now if you were doing it 6", different story... Jose

Turbo. Z31 Manifolds fit, but don't know if the turbo will clear the steering shaft (if not, custom manifolds will be needed, and it would then be best to put the turbo where the battery is). You'll need custom piping. You'll probably have to swap the ECU's for the Z31T unit, which will require re-pinning. Need the injectors from either the VG30ET or VG33ER, and possibly the MAF to go with it. Might need a NISTune ECU to get it running smooth. Need a custom exhaust anyway with a downpipe. Might need to switch to an E-Fan to make room for piping. You'll need to drill and tap the oil pan and the block for an oil source/return (or make a custom bracket for the alternator to fit a remote filter adapter and you can source it from there). You'll want the cams from a WD21 VG30E for the best torque. It's a lot of work, my friend. I've been doing research in this and so far that's what I got about turbos. Supercharger. Xterra/Frontier has stock superchargers on some models (VG33ER). Would be best to just get a whole donor motor (which can run you $1500+). You'll need the ECU and you'll have to re-pin it and modify the harness a bit. You'll need to raise the hood (shims probably work) to clear the superchager (or get a custom hood or cowl made). Not as hard as the Turbo. But just as costly for minimal gains. All-motor VG34E. You could get VH45DE pistons (Infiniti Q45 V8 motor) and either bore the piston end of the con rod or get VG30DE(TT) con rods. Bore the block .060 and head gasket to match. Best to port/polish the head. Use VG30E cams. Instant power adder (you should get about 50 more WHP from this). Exhaust. Just tell an exhaust shop you want 1.75" piping to the muffler and 2" out of it and they should be able to help you out no problem. Jose

Who wants a set of aftermarket suspension links?

OK, that's what I thought, But wasn't sure. Thanks for clearing that up Tyler! Jose -
Yea, especially since you have the VG33E, custom is really the only way to go.

This may sound like a newbie question, but which side do the Johny joints attactch to? Jose -
Wouldn't Frontier/Xterra gears work? Don't they have like 4.8 gears or something? I'm not sure about engine timing. That shouldn't change with the wheels/tires. May lose some torque at the wheels, and speedometer might be off, but I doubt by that much (when I moved to 31's, it actually corrected mine). Jose

Should help. Pads more so than the rotors...

is that wood covering the sides? Haha. Jose

Do we have a convert?

I THINK I JUST..OOHHH...OOHHH I would really like to know the price fo these! If you don't post here I'll PM you...My bushings are shot...and these..oooh...there I go again.... Jose -
A member who used to come here, Alex (nissandoms47) had straps on his R50. Go to a local 4x4 shop and they can help you further. This would be awesome. I've replaced my bushings like 3 times (mainly because the oil deteriating it, and I get used ones - doh!). It would be nice for me to be able to steer correctly (and nbot have to tun the wheel a 1/4 turn before my wheels even think about turning). Keep us posted! Jose

none. Do you have an auto or manual pathy? Auto has 4.6 gears manuals have 4.3 gears. Jose
-
How's your alignment?
-
While you are at it, replace the strut bearing (known as spherical bearing). This should be a MUST for safety reasons. about $20 each. Jose
-
Sounds like a short in electrical. Jose

To take the emblem off, you are going to first want to buy body adhesive. Its not clipped on or screwed on. It's glued on. So yea... Jose
-
Actually, the axle is different. Only the H233B is the same (well, except it uses the WD21 31 spline count). Hmm...Still wonder though... Jose

It's all good. I'm sure a lot of us can feel your pain. I had to get rid of a few of my cars like that. 87 Supra, 91 Escort GT with 323 GTX turbo conversion, 83 RX-7, 81 RX-7 with S5 motor swap (I miss this car) and a Ranger (not really cared for much). I remember seeing the Escort in the JY one day. There was a guy pulling the motor, and I got a chance to talk with him. He looked like a damn kid in a free candy store. At least I know it went to an active person who will rev it like no tomorrow. Jose
