  1. Okay, this IS embarrasing, in my post above I realize now it wasn't a new 2013 'Bed-Wetting Finder' that I noticed as I was passing by, no...instead it was I think a 2011 / 2012 R51 that I was admiring...these actually don't look that bad to me now and this newest Crapfinder that Nissan has developed makes the previous generation R51 look like a man's SUV. http://gomotors.net/Nissan/Nissan-Pathfinder-V8/photos.html?pic=9 Would I drive this? Absolutely without a doubt. The new one? NEVER! I never thought I'd hear myself say it but the R51 now, for me...not that bad. You have to give a nod to the V8 and presence of a real chassis / body on frame.
  2. you should wear goggles / eye protection, you're gonna have all kinds of crud falling in your hair, face, and eyes.
  3. It sounds like that extra clearance between the piston and the valves sacrificed on compression ratio, however that engine will never die, and being a lower compression engine, you could add on a turbo / rotax turbo / belt driven charger without having to change out the pistons. Pistons used in a forced induction engine are dished to keep the compression ratio low to allow for the extra force coming into the combustion chamber, or else the engine would tear itself apart. I'd look and see what kind of luck people have had adding an exhaust or belt driven turbo to the Villager engine..
  4. I'm going to give you a link to the diesel engine section under The Garage / How to forums. If this doesn't work, just go into The Garage and then click on the arrow next to "Custom" and choose show all and save / update filter. That way you can see all the threads and topics that have come from years past. Just look around in here, just now I did a quick 5 second scan and saw multiple threads about the TD27. Okay I just tried it, it doesn't work, so when you go there you need to click the arrow next to custom and go down to the bottom filter where yours will probably say last 60 days, open that up to choose a different time frame and click "Show All" then you can find what you need. http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/forum/30-diesel-engine-discussion/?changefilters=1
  5. Sorry, I forgot you asked what to move on to, depending on what you want it for, I prefer the WD21 but the R50 is also nice, I definitely wouldn't mind finding a good deal on a nice looking one, you mentioned there is a TD27 for sale near you, that's the one I'd be interested in. Oh yeah, you were asking where you can find a VQ model engine, those are used in the Infinity QX4 2000 and up year model, it's a 3.5 L 240 hp, has a timing chain instead of a belt and uses individual coil packs for each cylinder.
  6. Let me start by saying I'm not a skilled high level mechanic, I'm low on the totem pole wrench and socket. I can change brakes, oil, spark plugs, fuel filter, valve cover gasket..I had two years of auto tech in high school where I rebuilt several v8 heads, and I once pulled the head on an old Toyota celica that had a blown head gasket, I was 19 and hopeless, it took me atleast 6 months with that car in pieces in my garage, and ended in failure, had it towed. That's the extent of my experience, aside from the 15 or so cars I've owned over the last 23 years. I have knowledge about engines and how they work, transmissions to a much lesser degree and wiring even less..what you're describing I wouldn't prescribe to any but a well rounded experienced mechanic that had time, money and work space with tools and equipment, and an understand wife. If you are intent on this, I would move the operation back to the deer lease and set up shop there. You might be able to rent a large enough storage space where you can stash both trucks and do the work. Ofcourse anything is possible if you can read and you have the right tools and availability to do the work, some friendly support wouldn't hurt either...but I think this is a HUGE undertaking, not to be considered if your wife is going to complain about everything and you live in a deed restricted community. You will have two trucks in pieces spread around your property for the next two years. I think the TDI swap would be awesome, I wish my truck had a TD 27, they have more torque, get better mileage and will last longer if you take care of it. One of my many cars was a 81 Datsun 810 B / Nissan Maxima with I think an RD28 inline 6 cyl diesel and it was great, it was a pos but I loved it right up until I blew the motor because I didn't keep any oil in it, still makes me sad to think of it. And if you ever need to evacuate town, a diesel is a great tool because they sip fuel, especially a small one like ours, and you can run them on just about any kind of oil based liquid, bio diesel for one thing, vegetable oil too. Small diesel engines are cool, the big v8 diesels are nasty, like our other shop work truck F250 is lifted with 35" tires, rock hard suspension and 6.0 liter v8 diesel engine, I HATE driving that truck but I do appreciate the work it does for me..but man I can't WAIT to finally make it back to my shop so I can ditch the damned thing and get back in my Chevy silverado with a quiet v6 4.3L. Driving that ford across town is like having a washboard player from a Zydeco band sitting in the passenger seat just ripping away the entire time. The reason I bailed on you is (me in your position) I feel you'd save so much in time and headache and fights with the wife if you avoid the swamp route full of quicksand and other hazards that you're considering, out with the old and in with the also old in good condition and be done with it.
  7. Uhhggg...this changes everything, you never mentioned a wife factor before. Part out the old one, sell it for scrap metal and get whatever per pound they'll give you and by another used in decent condition. With what your saying now about your ability with the front end and the electronics and wiring, NOW i think you should just run away and head for safety. You don't want to get mired in this with your wife looking over your shoulder screaming at you..no no no no no...... Hey you don't happen to be involved with that new natural gas power plant going in at Temple do you? The Panda Temple energy what ever..Looks pretty interesting. Texas is going to lead the way with that new tech, I believe.
  8. A. It's not your daily driver so you can afford to take your time with it so that's cool. B. You already know that which ever route you take, it's going to be a lot of work regardless. C. The engine has high mileage and the tranny needs a rebuild. Personally, if it were me I'd pull the engine and tranny and sell for whatever you can get for it, and throw in a 2.7 TDI with a good manual trans and, slowly make your way through the truck from there. Hell, why not do an SAS while you're at it, you said the front end needs all kind of work, right? Perfect excuse to rip the whole damn thing out! You have to rebuild your truck regardless, why not make it worth while instead of going back with stock equipment? I'd ask Unccpathfinder for help, he seems to be able to speak this language. Yea, the more I think about it your situation is prime for a big rebuild like this. DISCLAIMER: The person making the aforementioned comments loves to pretend he's the greatest Monday morning armchair quarterback that's ever played the game and thus his comments are not based in any kind of actual experience; albeit where as he believes he is speaking from a logical standpoint, he is in fact completely clueless as to the reality of your situation. Please enjoy responsibly.
  9. wow he looked great going through there just as calm as could be, nice job I've done roughly the same thing with my son, letting him drive offroad and eventually went solo. Good stuff man.
  10. If I understand you correctly, once you De-register your pathy, it's not legal to be driven on the road, correct? If I were there, in your place, with my vehicle just waiting in the underground parking garage until the day the tow truck comes, just wait for the day to come then once the tow truck arrives, like someone else said above, just drive it out to meet them in an adjacent parking lot in a safe area away from the street, where you can supervise the handling of your truck. If any authority happen to drive by and question you, show them your paperwork, you are shipping your vehicle, you followed the designated laws set in place by the Jurisdiction of Spain, you do have the supporting documentation / paperwork to show that you don't intend on driving the vehicle and obviously, the tow truck is right here..it's getting loaded up..so, I think you'll be okay. Here in the states occasionally at one time or another everyone has driven with out of date registration and inspection sticker, like 3 or 4 months old....it's kinda the same thing I'd guess.
  11. I believe this problem is caused by one of two different things. Option A states that you blew a head gasket, all of those symptoms you described would be indicative of a blown head gasket. A simple compression check will highlight this. Also, if you do have a cracked piston, but not a blown head gasket, then only that one cylinder would show low on compression, all the others would still be high. Your mechanic doesn't need to rip the engine apart to tell you if it's still intact or not. Compression check will tell all. Option B states that your EGR valve is clogged and this is causing the white smoke and causing to run rough. A friend of mine experienced the same problem on his 2005 Turbo diesel ford F250, it was the EGR valve. I believe you shouldn't do anything until getting a compression check on every cylinder first. If they all check out, then there's something else going on. A bad broken engine will not hold compression. Good luck
  12. Hey Unccpathfinder first off man you are one talented guy, I can't believe how cleanly you stripped the 95, I can't even figure out how to remove the front passenger fender to work on the antenna! 2ndly, I wanted to let you know that I also carry full coverage on my 94 even though I've got people around me saying "Don't waste the extra $600 a year on insuring that old thing, you can just cover it yourself, and get liability!" I tell em..ahh, no thank you I like having my vehicle completely covered and for only $60 a month, why not? About the tear down and build up of the 87, DON'T listen to the nay sayers, they're all gonna hate and they just don't get it. I understand your inspiration, it came from a place deep inside and one day you were like "Eureka! I have a dime a dozen 4 door 95 that's average, and a cool vintage 2 door that could be cherry and I could make it really sweet with the new parts in place of the old ones! YES!" And then you tried to explain it to your friends and family.... You know I guess for most people, myself included, that might have wanted to try to do this, it would just end in disaster with two gimpy half built / torn apart vehicles laying around for God knows how long, but for you I think you've got the stones to see it through to a final stomping crescendo that you'll be really happy with. GODSPEED.
  13. I'm still rocking and rollin on mine, the one I posted up works great and plus it gives me another place to throw my stuff, i.e.: cell phone, wallet, extra change, pens, order of frys...
  14. my guess is a bad 5th gear synchronizer, in which case there's no way I know of to fix other than a tranny rebuild, but you may be able to put a bandaid on it so you can live with it until the entire tranny falls apart, or like you said just stay out of 5th. I also want to say failing throwout bearing but if it were that I think it would be related to every gear.
  15. I know I'm playing with fire here but I think I saw one of these the other day, and I actually did a double take on it. In person this thing (if it was the new Path that I saw) looks edgy and slightly aggressive with a nice stance, it didn't look anything like the utter soggy milktoast with chinese mustard on top suv the way they made it look here in the promo vid. Based on what I saw the other day, midsize suv with a V8 badge on back and Nissan badge in front, not too much body work, nice suspension stance, I'm inclined to pay a little more attention to it now. I know the difference between the Exterra, R51 and the Armada giant cruise ship that it is, this vehicle was neither and outclassed all of them. I also know it wasn't a Rogue, Juke or Murano. It looked tough, I was surprised. Go ahead, throw your rocks...I can't deny my feelings...until I take a harder look at it instead of passing by and saying "Hey! I think that's the..."
  16. I wonder if he ever thought after all his hardwork, "One day people will see a pic of my truck and try to really figure out if it's an r/c model...hmmm" I actually did kind of start thinking it was an r/c too. Its like somehow the photographer used a wierd lens speed and it threw off the size / spacial relativity of the truck and surrounding environs.
  17. That guy here on this board that got horribly stuck was using the km2s, if going with the BFG I'd definitely go with the original mt. BUT..I guess in all fairness he probably would have gotten stuck even if he'd had boggers or swampers or TSLs or whatever they are. You know in this league of tire it's not about performance anymore but price, fitment and personal style because you probably can't go wrong if your choosing between tires at this level.
  18. I forgot about the Treadwright Guard Dog, I've heard some really good reviews about these Treadwrights, probably a really great way to go actually, cheaper than dirt and seems to be a quality product, I kinda wish I had looked more into these. I just looked at NTB.com and they've got Federal Couragia mud terrains for around 130 to 150 in our size range but I class that into a harder core tire, wouldn't want to live with it on the road too much. https://www.treadwright.com/p-12-31x10-50r15-guard-dog-m-t.aspx
  19. delete this one, don't know what happened here.
  20. I would skip the Goodyear Authority, those look good but I personally get a bad feeling about them, call it instinct but they worry me for some reason. The Mickey Ts and Dick Cepeks are big name offroad racing brands which would be fine but overkill and probably cost another third or two more than they should. Where I do agree the Duratrac is a great tire, it seems to have a short life due to being a little on the softer side...I'm on the fence with this one. I don't know the Fierce brand, and Firestone is another one that scares me, I stay away, leaving the BFG M/T long lasting mud / road tire (rumored to get 60 K out) , I did look at this tire for a moment, only reason I opted out was because of road noise or hum and the Hankook M/T I also really liked a lot...The Hankook is my top pick, and then the BFG below that from your list. Not on your list, which I rate above the Hankook is the Cooper Discoverer STT M/T. I have a set of AT/3 WHICH I LOVE, have not gotten stuck yet with them tho I've been through some light to some what moderate areas, there are times I wish they were an MT instead of A/T...but I swear to you everytime I see a set of BFG A/Ts on another truck I'm again reminded how happy I am with my Coopers.
  21. Those spider gears pictured above are not from Ferrariowner123, those are from Kyle94 just showing how his own broken diff looked for comparison and I think the little sliver of metal that the diff magnet picked up looks a lot like one of that shattered disc of Kyle94s in the center. The length and width of it, and the texture all look identical because you wouldn't get a little tiny piece of metal from one of those big chunky spider diff gears, either big broken pieces or tiny metal shavings.
  22. Hey DJ I think I've still got a functional ignition module I can send you, put it in little bubble mailer probably cost a buck to send to you, it could be that you have a failing module. PM me your addy or a post office box and I'll get it out to you no charge. Oh yeah, forgot I've got a coil too! It's yours, no worries, Just let me know.
  23. I recently discovered there is a very delicate, oh lets say (because I don't know what it's called) timing wheel / disc under a little dust cover inside your distributor, after you remove the cap, take off the rotor, there are two philips head screws holding tight a little round cover, remove those and very gently and without touching perhaps, inspect that disc with all the little slots in it, if that has any dust or foreign debris it will cause the laser in that little box to read incorrectly, it seems to me it works like a cd player laser, it scans those little rectangular holes and translates into binary code for on / off signals, for what I got no clue but it looks important.
  24. Hagge, how much lift on your front end anyway? I'm thinking of doing this also but I want to be careful about it. Yours looks kinda extreme to me, how many inches did you get on the front? Is that 2 or 3 inch or what?
  25. I'd like to get around 2" out of a torsion bar crank, I have no idea yet if I'll need to re-index, but my question is if I am able to get 2" of lift from cranking the t-bars, is this going to do damage long term to my alignment, tires and cv joints and shafts? Is this really okay to do? I've talked to my mechanic and a specialist that he referred me to and they're both waving their arms at me in panic telling me not to do this. So are they freaked out just because they're unfamiliar with our trucks or what's the deal?
