ATF does work well. My friend used it to free a stuck lifter in his VW. I also used to run it in my old wd21 to keep the chatter down.

Having done this kind of trip myself in my pathy, I'll tell you your gonna have a great time. Before I left I put new brake pads and rotors, and changed all the fluids as they needed it anyway. Most importantly make sure your cooling system is in good shape. Clean your radiator out, mine had mud in it and she would get a little warm with the ac on. Like B said change the fuel filter and air filters. I did 15k km round trip, which meant three oil changes in a very short period of time.

If you got the tension close enough and didn't forget to tighten any bolts there isn't much to go wrong. Unless you used cheap ebay crap.

The one on my old 95 was starting to crumble, but it was the original 95 radiator. Otherwise I've never had any problems. I have the worm gear clamps right now but I like the stock ones better. They seal a lot better in the cold.

They don't fit properly at all, the set I got had to be cut and they rusted badly after just one winter. I will probably have to buy the thorleys at some point because I was being cheap the first time.

If you're buying a house why don't you just wait till aftet to do everything. Then you only have to get it aligned once.

278,000km on my 94, with 140,000km xterra tranny swap, done at 265,000km.

If it has been sitting with water in the cylinders at all, I would be afraid the cylinder walls got rusty.

It's the ka24 or z24, and it has a timing chain.

Make sure you find out the mileage and get a fair price. I was able to find a low miles (140k km) one for 500 including the transfer case. I would just change the t-case and trans as a unit. The Xterra t-case is the same as the wd21 one. Shifter length might be different but I have a body lift so it actually worked out in my favor.

The one on my transfer case has been missing for years. I don't even know how I would mount it to the new pipe I have, as it didn't come with a place for it.

It was new in November I swear. It wasn't even rusty at all! I think it must have just been a bad part. Yea the salt doesn't help but I didn't drive it a whole lot this winter anyway.

I know it sucks sometimes having to spend more than you want/have, but I would not buy car parts off of ebay. Just seems like it is all china junk. At least with a part store you can get a quick replacement if you need it.

There are some times I wish mine didn't have it. Like when you are trying to hook up a trailer it can get in the way, and once the trailer is on, you can't really open the tailgate.

Changed a ball joint that had been clunking and making weird noise when I turned. Almost a catastrophic failure here...This was a MOOG joint installed in November. And you can see there was no lack of grease....
