1. I drove a 2004 Outback for 6 months while living in Phoenix. While I had my truck there, I soon realized that the Outback could do about 80% of the Overlanding type trips I was doing. Mine was a brand new rental so I really got the chance to test it. Decent AWD combined with 8-8.5” clearance meant it could do ALOT. I did grind the four corners down through the paint as its approach & departure angles are wanting. On the other hand, I could throw a bike in the back easy, I could comfortably sit with my back against the side of the open hatch, I could lay down flat with my head resting on the folded rear headrests & read & look out through the open hatch. When that car was assigned to me at the airport, I dreaded it. Ultimately though, National had to call me six months later & require me to return it so that they could move it up to Salt Lake for the winter. That 6mo was when I learned to respect Subaru. That Outback was the little engine that could. An incredibly practical & usefull vehicle. Have fun with it Micah!
2. JDM Astar I assume? The LEDs from them & LUYED seem pretty good. I’d put Diode Dynamics at the top with DDM Tuning below that & then Mictuning, iJDMToy & JDM Astar. I’ve been thinking Alla & LUYED might belong there as well. I am trying both & will be interested in your long term results too. I’ve definitely learned my lesson about cheapies bit I’ve wanted to explore these lower cost ones for good quality at a good price. Longevity is the key to value there. BTW, LUYED certainly spares no attention to packaging, huh, mine came in literally beautiful little boxes.
3. I think the voting issue is that the poll doesn’t show up on TapaTalk. I access the forums almost exclusively on mobile devices, usually while waiting for something, so I never see it. I don’t expect it to be fixable, just an FYI.
4. Just as an FYI, Por-15 Chasis Black matches up pretty well with the other aged exterior blacks on the truck. I redid my WAAG bars, OEM hitch & swingate with it.
5. Search the threads, there’s at least 2 which are extensive. I know one is by@ferrariowner123 but there’s also another common poster who has done it as well. (I’d hunt it down but I’m on Tapatalk mobile right now).
6. hawairish &@QuasarDecimari How about a “How To” for those of not as mechanically gifted as the two of you. As this issue undoubtedly effects safety, it sounds to me like it should be part & parcel of any lift.
7. Coastal Texas plus 5 Hurricanes & 5 Tropical Storms since 2001. If it’s pervasive it may well have been flooded by saltwater in a hurricane storm surge.
8. @ferrariowner123 imports them from Japan. I believe he helped broker a purchase formicahfelker
9. Nope, that’s very similar to my rear WAAG bar. The dip on the lower bar looks like the WAAG rear bar for the XTerra- this company may have just modified it for the R50. I note, however, that this version doesn’t appear to be a solid piece all the way to the frame like mine is. Beware, the front & rear bumpers have very different profiles - the rear is much more straight.
10. I imagine you can find some as bolt on extras to Jeep XJ bumper kits. Should be
11. Looks great! White really is a nice color on these trucks!
12. Junk was simplistic, the 3rd Gen T4R is historically a solid vehicle. And no question regarding aftermarket support but that’s in large part due to Toyota’s long term commitment to off-road vehicles & the resultant popularity. Heck, even with my R50, I almost bought a FJ-40 as a play truck & an FJ-60/62as a project truck in 2003-4 (didn’t have the mere thousands that would have been then - touting Toyota FJs then made you the odd man out, that’s how much things have changed). It’s just in late ‘02, the VQ was much stronger, the Pathfinder’s handling was far superior (likely due to it’s unibody) & the interior of the 3rd Gen T4R was unbelievably dated for the time. Obviously Toyota knew it too as the 4th Gen came out right after I bought in Sept ‘02. Had I been able to buy later, I would undoubtedly have purchased a 4th Gen T4R (though with some reservation regarding its width). In ‘02, I found the Pathfinder a little bland in styling. It was the engine, handling & AWD option, in the face of a much nicer interior, that sealed the deal for me. Back then Toyota was only marginally more reliable than Nissan with Honda head & shoulders above all else (Nissan has recently fallen off the reliability cliff - thanks Renault). All that said, I put the WAAG front runner & lights on it to “toughen” its appearance up a bit.
13. Welcome!! Literally just an FYI (it’s my OCD, the meds just aren’t working) fair·ing /ˈferiNG/ noun - an external metal or plastic structure added to increase streamlining and reduce drag, especially on a high-performance car, motorcycle, boat, or aircraft.
14. I bought mine new. In fact, it’s the only new car I’ve ever purchased. In late ‘02 it was the best thing out there if you wanted reliability, a powerful engine, good handling & a usable body (oh, and comfortable). The 3rd Gen T4R was junk by comparison (I probably would have bought the 4th Gen T4R if it had come out a little sooner). It’s size is just right too. Even that 4th Gen T4R is really just a tad too wide for tree laden Forest Service roads. With the disastrous exception of my power valve failure, it only once gave me trouble (when the KN Filter I put in burned out my Mass Flow). Mine has stayed in great shape & done countless trips & chores for me. She’s been through about all the CO passes except Black Bear-as an essentially stock vehicle no less. They’re still on the road in great number but actual off-roaders are rare so I like that it’s different. Also, I’ve learned that in the current day & age, I really like the value set of those people who run them. This forum is a great example (I only wish I’d become more active before my power valve failure & had been able to prevent it). I’ve now got my Mom’s 5th Gen T4R waiting in the wings but I expect to drive my Pathy at least another 10 years.
15. I think the one we found was 2WD but@TowndawgR50 or @ferrariowner223 probably know for certain, I was playing with different stuff
16. An excellent choice & well deserved!! AND an excellent device to trap him here on our forum (devious chuckle!)
17. That’s a phenomenal explanation from Diode Dynamics! That really is incredible customer service. I’m amazed someone took the time & care to write all that out. I feel good about having purchased their LEDs.
18. With LX570s, GX470s & 460s there are Lexus out there
19. Honestly, better than a 2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium as far as conveniences, I’m constantly amazed our “Premium” T4R is missing things my 16 year older Pathfinder has (auto lights, seat memory, auto climate, gas tank lock, roof rails that extend forward past the rear passenger compartment, 6 way power seats, All Wheel Drive). You can get some of that on the Limited so it’s not entirely a fair comparison & the locker & ATRAC are fantastic, but still - it’s the little stuff. @mjotrainbrain, are you telling me the ‘02 QX4 had heated rear seats? Also, adaptive cruise? I mean, I knew it had the remote rear hatch glass pop (& an analog clock) but, wow, those others are big.
20. My seats take many minutes to warm & have since new. On a sub 32* day, I don’t feel them until I’m over halfway to work (& about 3-5”). It also annoys me how it appears to cycle: warm, luke warm, a little cool, warm again. I’ve always assumed it has some system where it heats up to a certain temp, turns off & then turns on again either at a certain temp or after some time interval. Literally every other car I’ve rented, driven or owned has been better. My wife’s ‘01 Jetta could cook a meal in about a minute. I also liked it’s 5 set points so you could get it just right (though I’d never advocate buying a VW). Our T4R has multi adjust & can warm you through my Mom’s sheepskin covers over leather & even with her little 1” booster she uses. The MDX is ‘09 & similar but faster & warmer than the Path. The G has multi adjust & is much warmer & consistent. All that said, I’ll take it over no seat warmers - I love seat warmers as the truck is almost always quite cold when I get into it.
21. Unfortunately the Trail bars aren’t parallel & taper towards the rear. In general, I find the roof rail system on my Pathfinder much better. There’s no roof anchor point forward of the rear passenger compartment on the 5th Gens.
