  1. roll down the windows and drive fast umm my 87 had a slow leak/weak compressor and it actually got moisture in the system and after a quick recharge at a buddies garage it lasted for 1 summer until it got cold and then it lost its charge...i cant really remember how to tell if the compressor is weak but it seemed to be something with how much friction/runout was in the pulley... if it ends up being a compressor i've got 1 out of a 95 that was good and strong when it was pulled and its been sitting for about 5 months or so but it should be good i could let u get it for cheap if it would work for u're application... i would think a recharge should fix u're problem you can also check line temps and that might tell a little about the charge in the system...just be careful with the hot side lines b/c if its low it can get really hot
  2. i have heard folks talk about an adapter plate...i have used 2 auto engines (1 out of a 95 and 1 out of an 86 maxima) and i never found any thing remotely similar to the pilot bushing...i just pressed in the new 1...just hold the bushing up to it and if it looks like there is nothing in the way to obstruct it from fully inserting then i would assume that you have the same case as mine... i know slick has something about it in her engine swap writeup
  3. depends on what im doing and where im going...but on a daily basis: on me personally my leatherman and pocket knife in the truck daily: ~extra belts ~200 and some odd piece craftsman tool set ~fluids ~jumper cables ~nylon rope ~tow strap ~blanket ~first aid kit ~2 flashlights (1 reg and 1 led) the led got left on for 2 weeks and still has original batteries ~starter ~alternator ~cb (currently fried so its mia) ~map of where im going ~phone charger ~duct tape ~tie straps ~super glue ~jb weld ~i need to get a fire extinguisher ~currently lots of extra oil and an oil pressure sending switch in case it blows out completely ~homemade tire knockin stick which doesnt have the intention for knockin tires...and yes i have used this a couple of times mostly as i drove by friends that threw or did something stupid to my truck and they thought they were far enough back where i couldnt get them...and almost 1 time at the racetrack when this friggin drunk ass redneck in his brand new tacoma tried to come around me and about ran into the side of the pathy with his kids in the back seat yellin at me "if this mother #$!&^% wants to rub we'll rub" and i wouldnt let him in until i realized he was in fact going to rub...so i grabbed my stick got out and told him that if he did that again i would beat his $#&%in ass in front of his kids and wife...she proceeded to slap the hell out of him and we all went on our marry ways...and it scared the @!*% out of my gf cuze i dont get pissed off like... depending on what im doing and where im going i can add a high lift jack bigger ropes and of course water/food/more extra parts and all the necessities to have a good safe time out in the wilderness
  4. im gonna have to change my vote here in the next month or so...i have successfully put 40k on in 1 year of ownership...shes now up to 143... what are the rules for my 87...it had 275 with the original engine now shes going on to her 130k 95 engine...is it chassis miles or engine miles?...i really wish taht lil piece of metal didnt fall in there cuze she would have 315 now
  5. thats what we were thinking with mine but amazingly she purred like a kitten (well as good as it could on 2/3 of an engine) i think its cuze it was firing 2456 so it wasnt horribly off...we did a lot of adjustment in timing too...the only thing i did notice was it smelled a touch rich where i guess it was getting partial or post ignition...def sounded off tho i noticed with the lack of power that it didnt sound exactly perfect but i didnt have any valve banging... i check like 10 times B4 i put it back together after a t-belt change b/c after breaking that 1 belt and seeing what minimal damage is...i really dont want to see major damage
  6. just a shot in the dark...you some how didnt accidently flip the settings on the amp or change the gain to zero? the funniest story i have about that is my rommate that "knows" stereo equipment couldnt get my 8's to kick bass (b/c i told him they werent for bass) well he put them both on the ground and stuck his head between it...while the volume was very very loud but the amp was set towards the bass only and he flipped it to midrange...i've never seen him jump so high in the air...he then jumped in his car and proceeded to pout for the next half hr and blamed it on me...i just laughed my ass off for about an hr or so... i may not know the "dos and donts" of car stereo's but i have installed endless radio's and havent blown anything...i did have 1 head unit go bad but my uncle used it for about 3 years and then i used it for about 5 so i figured it was about time for it to die..it would just randomly power off and on so i replaced it... good luck
  7. yea i would have swapped out with cdhicks when he came and got that tranny of wheelmans...ohh well the fabbed up crap is gonna have to work sometime...
  8. timing light can show that timing is correct but i think the belt can still be off (i may be wrong but i think this is possible), compression check, ignition check (cheap version of compression check) b/c if the belt isnt damn near 100% right then there will be some issues with valves hitting pistons and loss of power... pull the dist cap and pull plug #1...roatate engine till #1 is at tdc verify position of the dist rotor...i think it should be towards the intake (just follow the contact and the ridge on the dist cap to the plug wire socket and that will be where it needs to go) to find tdc i put a LONG rod (make sure it doesnt fall all the way in the cylinder) in the cylinder and rotate the engine till i find the peak and make sure its a compression stroke (this is how i got 180 degrees off) pulled the dist and reset it fired up and bam she cranked up and ran like @!*% then a lil tweaking and she ran like a champ it still kinda sounds to me like a timing problem if you noticed a regain in power when i broke a belt and bent some valves i got it well enough in time on 4 cylinders to actually drive it but it had NO power at all...i just recently did a belt and got the dist about 180 degrees out of time and thought i had toasted the engine b/c i wasnt getting any ignition and after a couple hrs of resetting to TDC and realigning the the rotor it all worked out... ignition check: crank up truck get a good pair of insulated pliers at the sit pull 1 plug wire at a time (truck still running) if the idle changes or cuts off that cylinder is good if nothing changes then that cylinder is bad (bent valve or loss of compression some how)
  9. i'd do cam seals as well, possibly the tensioner and valve cover gaskets (i found loosening the rocker arms does make the job a lot easier as suggested in the manual) and a couple of other miscellaneous things (i cant think of them right now)
  10. hmm keep the original cluster and just swap out the faceplates so u keep ure milage and what not...be very careful with the clear plastic it likes to break easily...also be careful when removing the needles b/c you can screw up the spring in the speedo...if u have the infamous melted speedo needle i would replace it with some of the newer orange 1's's...they dont melt...
  11. I watched a show where this guy was showing how oblivious people are and how they wont say anything and he just walked up to some cars and busted the windows out and was like man i locked my keys inside and every1 was like well wouldnt a locksmith be cheaper and he was like no then grabbed some @!*% and walked off...he did it on cars, houses (neighbors watched them load up @!*% and never called the cops), and hotels (got folks names and then "forgot his key" and got let into rooms by security...there was only 1 hotel in vegas that wouldnt let him in...but many other big name casino/hotels in vegas and new york let him right in... then i thought how many times in charlotte i've seen cars with the wing window busted out and the tag either removed or relocated being obviously stolen and not calling about them...except for 1 time when i saw a guy on campus and he pulled up next to me with the window down the system bumping...the back wing window busted out and i saw wires all over the place on the steering column...ohh yea it was like 20 degrees outside
  12. so whats wrong with relocating my speedo/odo? im right too ...multiple ways to get there but the same result...
  13. ^nailed it...i accidentally found 4L 1 day i was wheeling and leaned over to get something and pushed down on the stick and it dropped into 4L and i was like OHHH it does work...i've never used 4L (except for that 1 time my buddy that has a kick ass trans am wanted to see how much it pulled in 4L which i could def tell a difference) but then again i never really do any rock crawling or have been in a position where i needed the extra torque
  14. yea i think you also loose the actual amount of torque being applied due to slippage and what not...i was being sarcastic...the only wheel locks are on the spare tire...the actual wheels dont have locks... if they want the wheels and ****** tires on them they can have it...i have full coverage and could use some new tires...
  15. most of the time you cant get into driver side doors...pass side doors are much easier to get in from my experiences (tow truck driver also told me pass side doors are easy to get into and so far its been true and thats with a slim jim) scary is also that my buddy bought some wheel locks from some tire place and my cuz bought them from somewhere back home and when we were doing his locker he couldnt find his wheel lock and i was like well it kinda looks like mine but i bet there is a diff in the depth of the keys or something but nope sure enough it fit right in... so that got me to thinking that i could really piss off the guys at the tire shop and get 6 sets of wheel locks and have 6 keys for each tire...i bet they wouldn't be happy
  16. ^ i started that but abandoned ship after the cable gave me problems mating up...so im mtg the speedo/ odometer down on the right hand side of the dash to where it can still be seen through the steering wheel...and then i will be getting a gps to verify the speed nad have it located in a more viewable spot. the trannys will swap (for the v6's i dont know about the 4cyl)...u will have to add in the clutch pedal and brake pedal assembly, all the plumbing for the clutch, remove the cover plate in the floor and replace with the 5 spd cover plate and create a jumper for the auto's interlock so it'll get juice to the coil...other than that it should be pretty straight forward... i think u also have to change the pilot bushing
  17. i've got 2 sets of coils (out of an 87 and out of a 95) if u pay for shipping u can have both... just shoot me a PM if ure interested
  18. hmm thats weird on the key thing i know my other pathy keys wont open each other... but a crazy interesting thing is on newer chevrolets...i think like mid 90's and up until at least 02 or so...any chevy truck key will open another chevy trucks door...i know my buddies sonoma key opened another buddies z71 and my roommates s10 when he locked his keys in it...that makes me want to try out my buddies 06 z71 to see if they fixed that lil bug or not...if not i wouldnt have a chevy
  19. sorry i cant help...but nice truck all around...i really like the fenders/flares scoop and bull bar...I think that hood would look sweet on a pathy that pulls off the super charger...goes to ebay and starts looking for hoods...
  20. what procedure did u follow after flushing...these systems are bad about vapor locking... i usually fill up the system as much as possible...let it run and add more coolant to top it off...then let it cool off...then cap it and drive it till it gets warm...then burp the system very carefully and let it cool with the cap off...if you have any kind of air pocket in the system it will overheat like crazy....
  21. starter kill switch wont help on a manual...and couldnt you push start an auto? it might not be healthy for the tranny but its the same concept isnt it? just put a quick release on the steering wheel like they do in stock cars and take the steering wheel wherever you go... do they still sell those prolock systems? i know my moms car used to have it and i think it was just a fancy kill switch that you plugged in under the dash and if it wasnt in it wouldnt start...
  22. man after helping my buddy put a lockrite in his chevy (the 1 wheel burner that i posted some time ago)...it took us about an hour and a half to do (he's really anal about things and it took him a damn hr to scrape the gasket)...but we did it without reading the instructions and it is schweeeeeet...he works at advance and i went up there to get an oil pressure sending unit an the whole damn parking lot was covered in doughnuts and burnouts...
  23. a good friend of mine's dad has a car lot...they broke into his secured lot which was monitored by camera's but not good enough resolution to make out faces....but they stole the 2 car roll back along with 2 cars out of the lot.... the @!*% of it is they are using it to steal other cars...my buddy saw it on the interstate 1 day going the other direction and by the time he whipped it around they had already gotten off with another car... the same guy had a maxed out tacoma with custom wheels and what not on his lot with all the special corners head lights and tail lights and blah blah blah...after it came back from the detail shop the alarm was turned off and he didnt catch it...and he had a damn good idea of who stole the stuff so he showed up at their house and sure enough their tacoma had all the parts on it that were stolen the night B4...they didnt even put it on blocks left it sitting on the rotors...needless to say he kicked the kids ass while the cops were on the way to arrest him...got all his stuff back and damages to fix what they ruined when dropping it...then he went after the other kid that turned off the alarm to help him steal the stuff... i think you should get those things the DOT in NYC puts on ure tires to lock the car down...just pull it out of the back plop it down and lock the pathy in place if theft is that bad...or invest in 1 of those gps tracking thingmabobs
  24. i have also had my brake pad shims (from cheap ass advance auto parts) become un adhered and start hitting the hub bolts on the spindle... i say jack it up and spin it...and if im not mistaken it will engage while u spin...keep an eye on the cv to see if they''re locking or what
  25. like i said if some1 wants it bad enough no matter what u do they can have it...all it takes is a rollback or just a reg tow truck and about 3-5 mins and the truck is gone... at work some1 had an 07 dodge truck stolen out of the parking lot like that...guy pulled in hooked up and some1 asked him what he was doing and said ohh its tranmission locked up or some BS like that and was gone B4 the guy could walk in and get the security guard... and most of the time its not the pathy they want...its whats inside so a quick smash and grab will take care of that
