havent ever changed them on a newer pathy but they cant be that much diff from any other thing i've worked on.... they're not hard just can be a huge PITA with the springs...i'd also check the wheel cylinders for leaks and what not
-
in my 95 if u tap on them they come on...it doesnt happen often but sometimes they go out and give it a good slap and they come back on...havent had the problem in my 87 tho so that might explain y they seem like they're on sometimes
-
then should you really be trying to do it?... really if ure mechanically inclined...if not find a buddy that is get him to help and teach u...i've done this with many friends of mine and now they'll tackle almost anything just see whats hanging up and remove it get new gaskets and put it back on...i dont know much about automatics never had 1...but is it just the gasket heated up and melted on and is stuck...you could possibly run a razor knife around it to break it loose...
-
good deal...i'm always broke so i had to go the cheapest route to get back to the highway...so gettin parts and doin the work myself was the cheapest fastest way
-
gotta ?....was the internal damage such that you couldnt have rebuilt the top half and got rollin again...when i broke my t-belt i was moving at about 50 going up hill as soon as it went i hit the clutch i ate 3 valves did a top half rebuild in 3 days b/c napa had a wrong valve in the right box grrr... was just curious?
-
^ now that thing is awsome if u roll over backwards going up hill it lookes like it'd be a ball and keep on rolling
-
it should make a really bad clunking/clicking sound when ure going around a turn...i believe if u turn left and year it its the right 1 and if u turn right and hear it its the left 1...not 100% on that but i have heard some cvs go bad on a fwd and they start off clicking then when they're fixing to break they start clunking....then they go POW and you end up in the ditch (my ra did that freshman year)
-
whats it smell like...gear oil is nasty i dont think pws has a distinct smell but u could def rule out gear oil...as well and possibly everything... how are the brakes b/c when my master cylinder started going out it would shoot fluid and coat everything below it...
-
so what if you did it the other way...i changed the leaky waterpump and didnt know about the whole timing belt deal and how antifreeze breaks down the structual integrity of the belt and was broke at the time and counted my quarters to get the wp... in turn broke the t/b 7k later...ate 3 valves did a top end rebuild...that was some scary @!*% for never having seen the inside of a motor...but thanks to the FSM and my x's dad (airplane mechanic/pilot in the army) telling me he had done this several times b4 then finding out later on he had done it once in kwajalen (sp) on a 4 banger mazda car it all worked out great my carnage and learning experience the 2nd from the right is a strait valve the others are bent so what level do i qualify for? wish i would have known about these boards way back then

im not sure how diff that is but i used a 86 maxima motor into my 87 and once the motor is out swapping parts doesnt take too long... i had to swap: -oil pick up and oil pan -oil dipstick had to be relocated (pop out a plug and slip the tube in) -i ran the maxima heads and put my intake on -swapped out all the brakcets and bolts (set them side by side and ripped off all the maxima mounts and threw on the pathy brackets) -be extra careful to not forget and re-install that thin plate between the flywheel and motor i forgot and it sucked removing the flywheel again to put it in -i was going to change the front main seal and its casting so i could run the wd21 water pump but that seemed to be not possible so i just ran the maxima timing belt housing and it sealed it all up but i did have to get a D21 2wd waterpump b/c the maxima wp had a short throat and diff flange dont feel too bad i broke all kinds of stuff and ran out of money...took out a loan and got a 95 cuze my cousin finally decided to sell hers after i got 75% of the way thru this...so now im driving the 95 and the 87 is sitting until i graduate and get a job and some $...all i have left to do is: -pour in oil crank it up hope it doesnt blow up or smoke -buy new oil pres. gage since i lost the one of the damn lil brass tapered doo-hickey -get it in time -top off antifreeze -change t/case tranny and rear gear oil -get headers and install -reinstall shifter and carpet or yank it out and rhinoline it -change front windshield my luck was so horrible and i got so frustrated i just quit and even tho its been about 2 months i still dont want to work on it b/c im sure the luck will continue and when i turn it over it'll be a whole nother disaster... good luck with the rest tho

my egr was completly clogged...i think u need to make a plate to cover where u remove it...but my ac on the pass side where it goes into the firewall it was loose...check it it might be loose cuze i never checked it b4 the motor broke and that woulda fixed it...but if ure like me and dont run it u can rip it out...but like others advised me is it really worth it in our trucks... havent heard much on the alt relocation but lemmie know the logic behind that...even if its mechanical advantage
-
WORD I gots ta get me sum of doze.... not really...but hey thats not a bad idea cuze those ghetto sleds tend to have a $800 car and put $4000 worth of rims on it...and u know if some star throws them on every1's gonna want them
-
possibly weld up some sort of bracket that would allow you to screw into it..im thinking like the corss members on the stock racks so you dont have some eye sore (studs pokin up) when the rack is not installed
-
thats what i did i beat the ever living crap out of my T-bars to get them out of the crossmember and it never moved so i gave in and used the front

thats crazy about the tape...they could have at least jb welded them... my moms old car managed to have all but 2 lugnuts cross threaded out of 16 and all of them had to be busted off with a torch and air chisle...i really dont see how these places dont get more law suits i think the best story i've heard is at 1 of my jobs on campus we get stuff from staples and their delivery driver was on I-77 northbound and a lady in a bmw had just left the shop going south bound and her tire fell off a transfer truck behind her hit it it jumped the 8-10 ft tall median wall and the driver put his arm up and knocked it over to the passenger side as it came thru the roof/window and somehow maintained his truck in his lane in rush hour traffic and only scuffed up his arm...i saw pictures and was amazed he wasnt dead it crushed the steering wheel down on his lap and pretty much ripped the top off of the cab of the truck -

yea...i used to make those places very nervous cuze i keep a close eye on my truck...the best was when i was getting my truck inspected and the guy went to put oil in it i came running out of the waiting room yelling "what the hell are you doing" he was like uhh putting oil in it i was like the hell you its good and he was like ohh i didnt even check it to make sure...then they proceded to ask me to pull it out of the shop b/c he wasnt very good at driving stick i hate it when i have to go to the shop for things like inspections and tires b/c most of the people are idiots...1 of my friends used to work at an oil change place and he said 1 of the guys put 5 qts in a geo metro and then called him up on his day off asking y it was smoking so bad -

yea thats what i say but places around here wont let that and the tire kingdom i spoke about uses torque sticks the proper way and wouldnt you know who she got the tires put on by was sams -
I've had the new truck for almost 2 months now and i noticed a vibration in the rear as soon as i got it and knew she had just had the tires/rims put on i figured the tires were out of balance but had told the gf to remind me to check the lugs when we got done driving to the beach and we both forgot and i didnt think anything of it until yest when i was cleaning up the truck and noticed that 1 of the lugs was only hanging on by like 2 threads so i go to tighten it down by hand and it tighten it just backs off so i thought crap i ate the threads off of the stud checked it and the stud was good but it looks like they stuck the lug nut on by a thread or maybe not at all and cranked it on cross threaded and/or they over tightened it...it looked very nasty but made me mad all in all my vibration is gone and this is the 2nd time i've had a lug get loose on me although the front 1 was a lot easier to detect and no wonder people in motorsports get crazy when they feel a vibration cuze it was pretty bad at road speeds so does any1 else ever have problems with tire places and doing stupid things like cross threading or tightening too much? i've had this run in at about 5 or 6 different places...but recently found that the tire kingdom here does a good job of not messing things up

hmm well i went thru 2 exhausts in 2 years in my 87 b/c i went to a gas station/repair shop and they used crap parts...i went to a muffler shop in town that was cheap and good and i havent had it rust thru in 5 years so i dont know if they changed the angle so the condensation drains out or what but i will def go to them again when i need 1
-
got it taken care of it was really cold yest like 30 or so and when i cranked up i popped the hood and holy crap it was leakin from both ends of that rubber hose up front had gas everywhere so i busted out the leatherman and tightened it down and this morning i didnt smell nething so hopefully thats all....but it still does its goofy lil idle thing for the 1st 5 mins or so
-
is this all the time or before it warms up i know my truck bounces up and down when its almost warm (the 87) and will flatten out once its warmed up
-
i just had the same problem u were having in my 87 b4 the motor broke...what i would do is turn it over to start then kick the key back to the on position and the starter would disengage and everything would run like a champ (i think the spring that kicks the key back broke) i was going to to a bump start switch but havent gotten to it yet since the motor issue... it has 250k on it so i think it did its job although my 95 had its ignition replace in the early late 90's
-
i looked and felt where i could and didnt see anything...sure could smell it tho is it one fuel line in particular that leaks for every1 or can it just be any of the connections...if its just one does any1 have a pic
-
I checked last night when it was doing it but couldnt see anything and/or feel anything but this week it is going to be cold so when it stops raining in the day light i'll check again...hopefully thats all this is
-
doing my 87 i had to remove that washer with the spline groves cut in it b.c if i left it in there it would keep the hubs engaged all the time but did put the snap ring back on
