1994pathfinder
What are the quickest/easiest ways to get some more horsepower out of a stock 1994? is the Nismo cold air intake worth $275, how much difference does it make? or would it be better to go with a new exhaust and if i do that, which is the best set up? Simon
There are no "quick" and/or "easy" ways to make noticeably more power in these motors. A decent intake AND exhaust will help a little bit, but without getting into ECU reprogramming and cams, they just don't make a whole bunch of power. That said, in my case, I figure with the modifications I've done (headers, hi flow exhaust) and a K&N drop in, I've probably brought my 14 year old truck back to factory spec for power output. I may be harnessing ALL 153hp now.
adamzan
Better than my friends volkswagen jetta that has a 90hp engine. Now THAT is gutless.
nismothunder
Nitrous is the easiest and quikest way to get more power...But I wouldnt go over a 100 shot on any stock engine... But a cold air intake and exhaust are pretty much the stand by on hear... I have 2 1/4 pipe and a glass pack from the last cat back and a K&n air filter...the air filter I cant say that I noticed any more power over a paper fram one but it seems like I Have more midline torqe then the paper...but this comes at a lose since it feels like I lose some low end power. But these are the drop in filters and not cone style... cams areanother thing,if I remember there are 2 performance style cams for this engine...But I have never tryed them so I cant give you any data or any thing... Intakes and exhausts are the things you does first in any engine, from a 1.9 escort to a 8.1 chevy...there usally the easiest and the lest complacation(exhaust stud not counted). But the first thing you should do if you havent done it already is a simple tune up and fluid change.
MikeV
You going to race your truck, wheel your truck or just dyno it... Skip the Nismo cold air intake, you can get a snorkel for that price which gets you totally away from the engine bay. Headers, high flow exhaust are all somewhat strait forward upgrades. If wheeling get a locker as horsepower spinning tires gets you nowhere. If you want to race get a Z... Welcome to NPORA

But they can be made fast... a guy I knew had a 4 banger 91 escort and and changed it from fi to carb and made like 210 hp(a lil bit up from the stock 92 hp...but it ate trannys... MikeV
I have a buddy with a turbo chevette (scary @ss ride) looks like a piece o crap until the hood is popped. I only went for 1 ride and that isn't for me; like a rocket tin can.
MY1PATH
headers + a JWT S1 or mild schnider cam is prolly the best way to wake up your vg in a hurry. If you do it all yourself prolly under a grand. Edited November 18, 2009 by MY1PATH

I plan on adding cams and ECU when i rebuild the engine sense im 300 miles away from 200k :-)
Toby
Better than my friends volkswagen jetta that has a 90hp engine. Now THAT is gutless. My s10 makes 120 at the crank and maybe 70-80hp at the rear wheels.... the toyota yaris loaded with people is faster than my truck in 0-60. Try the Z24 (available in a few pathys) that I had in my D720 (kingcab 4x4) 106hp at the crank, fresh. Imagine it at 160,000 miles... Damn thing never died though... so you want more horsepower? the quickest way is to buy a faster car *snort* Or a tow vehicle... B

These engines aren't like domestics, that need rebuilt every 30k.

I had my pathy on a dyno.(with headders) 103 HP and 133 ftlbs to the wheels. if you factor in about 20% drivetrain loss for the 4wd tranny thats about 130 HP & 165 ftlbs to the crank and the original rated output for the CA model vg30i was less than 135 HP & 165 ftlbs crank So I'd say my pathy has held up fairly well with its 235+ miles on it but still leave a bit to be desired... Nismojunky
when i rebuild the engine sense im 300 miles away from 200k :-) umm 314 XXX and counting and on another note has anyone used those cams from 4x4parts? nunya
Quick power? Step 1. Open hood Step 2. Remove radiator cap Step C. Push truck from spot Step 4. Push a car with power into spot Step Square. Re-install radiator cap onto new car Step orange. Close hood Step 7. Turn key and enjoy! Or...engine swap? And you don't know power like a KA powered HB on 31"s with a bad head gasket dumping coolant into the block. I did have a Yohimura carbon fiber silencer off of a GSXR on it for like a month... that added awsome hp!

MY1PATH
umm 314 XXX and counting and on another note has anyone used those cams from 4x4parts? yeh, a guy on N4W used the mild cam on his fronty. Search there and you will find. I think he had very slight lope @ idle and the power doesn't come on untill after 3k rpm IIRC which is how he liked it. yeh its a 3.3 but its the same cam for the 3.0. Imagine losing more bottom end w/ the 3.0 since there is less dispacement to overcome...
