Max tire size VS Lift Kit Used VS Custom or OE Wheels

Year: 2001
Lift: AC Springs plus 1 inch spacer front + 1 inch spacer rear
Wheels:OEM nissan
Tires: BFgoodrich KM2 255/85R16 (33,3")
Notes: running 1.25" spacers on all 4, Alot of trimming needed to be done both in front and the rear to have no rubbing even under flex.

I have a 2004 SE, it is bone stock and I am assuming because it's not an LE that it has 16 inch wheels. I want bigger tires without rub while keeping stock ride height (for now) I see that pic of Grabber A/T 2's that look really good but are on that LE in size 245/70/17. What can I run for a big no rub tire on my stock wheels? I am searching everywhere and getting no clear answer. People are saying stock size only and I just don't think that's true. Would I want 245/255/265? What are the pros and cons of those and what are the pros and cons of 65/70/75? What is the best combo that'd fit?

I have a 98 Pathfinder stock suspension. Installed new 15x8 wheels with 4.5" backspacing. Goodyear dura trac 31x10.5x15. Very slight rub on the front lower edge of the plastic inner wheel housing. Heat gun fixed the issue. Also had a slight wheel rub on the top front edge of the brake caliber. Touched the caliber up with a grinder and all is well now. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this problem but thought I should mention the possibility.

Strut-to-tire clearance is about 1/4". I only test fit, didn't actually end up getting the whole set. No rub at full lock.

Strut-to-tire clearance is also about 1/4". No rubs at full lock coz I've trimmed the flares previously.

Note: The common size for 35s is 315/75/16 or 35x12.5/16. To run this, you gotta have 6" lift and 3.25" BS. I couldn't find any manufacturer that makes 16x8, 6x5.5", 3.25" BS. The only way to achieve this is to use spacers on top of stock OEM/aftermarket wheels. You can get 3" or 2.75" BS wheels, and fit these 35s, but your tires gonna stick way out past the fenders.

I decided to go with 33s. 305/70/R16. The price on CL was right...and since I have to drive 2 hours to get to a good offroading spot...

I removed the front splash guards and will have to do some bending/trimming behind the front tires.

Ok, I didn't want to thump through 7 pages to see how well this is covered, so...

Stock 1999.0 R50 going from stock alloy rims with Yokohama AT-S (great tire) 265/70/15 to Cragar Soft 8 (15x7"? Bought used, not certain) with 31x10.5x15" BFG AT KO.

 

Main differences are:

Category Yokohama BFG AT Notes

Diameter 29.5" 31" speedo will read low by 4.5%

Tread Width 10.5 10.5

Rim Backspacing 5.5" 4.75" Measured off of outside edge so not actual dimension, use for reference

Weight 58lbs 70lbs

Clearance NP Rubs slightly up front turning in reverse on flat, problem will be worse off road.

 

Note, the suspension is soft on this R50 with the fenders measuring 32" up front, 33" rear with stock tires (.5-.75" more with aftermarket). I suspect some replacement springs up front will address the rub/clearance issue and level it out a better. I haven't decided if I will go with stock springs or a mild lift as this is our MallCrawler...

I don't have enough miles on it to tell how the different tires impact mileage, but the Yokohamas ride nicer and I suspect are better in wet road conditions. The aftermarket tires fill the wheel wells better, especially with the different offset, giving it a better look and stance IMO. Again, once I bring the front end up a little they should fit flawlessly. A good upgrade if so desired, especially if you find a great deal on tires somewhere.

Thinking about picking these up for the time being while I collect all the parts for my lift. I will use the wheels for sure and get news tires once its all said and done, but i wanted something at least to mockup the setup so i dont have to put my 235/75/15s on there once i get everything installed.

 

Plan is 2" AC coils, new shocks struts and strut spacer up front (1"? or 1.5?)

1". Just got the ones fluerys manufactures installed. I recommend them as they're very budget friendly. Levels it out perfectly.

Need tires for my Pathy soon, bone stock 2003 SE 4x4, just wondering what kind of spacer/lift I would need to fit 32/10.5/17 on the stock 17" wheels. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

 

I'm pretty sure a a 2 inch suspension lift all around would allow for that. I ran 32's with no problems on my stock 16's.

Just be careful with 32's clearing the strut. I would have had to go with wheel spacers to clear them - yes, actually had 32's test fit before purchasing my 31's.

I confirm 255 70 17 is simply too big. The tires fit on 17" stock rims (same as those seen on 02psychopathy pics), but they clearly rub in the front fender. I did try them on a dry fit. I finally decided to go with 255 65 17, because I wanted the width. I am pretty satisfied with this. This makes a 30" x 10" tire, which is big enough for this truck, if you don't want modify anything or melt any plastic. They fit without any problems. I thought about 265 65 17, but since the trail that goes to my cabin has many short stiff drops, which makes the rear axel to seriously push one wheel up in the rear fender, I had a doubt. I did test them (255) at those precise spots and there is 1/4" left between the tire and the fender, so 265 would rub. I have to say that my rear springs are nearly due. I guess, I you want to push it to the limit and deal with slight rubbing, which could be solve by remodeling the plastic fenders, 265 65 17 is fine, but if you don't want to modify anything at all 255 65 17 fit perfectly. As 02psychopathy posted, 245 70 17 seem to be fitting pretty nicely too, but for some personal reasons I find that 245 is not wide enough for a Pathy. Maybe it because that is the width you find on Honda Ridgeline, which I don't like at all. Cheers

I put a 2x4 flush with the fender flare and leveled it so you could get an idea of how far inboard the wheel sits in relation. All of the these measurements were taken out to the board for reference.

I should have used something for reference, but it's about a 1/4" gap between the tire and strut.

My measurement for backspacing was nearly 5.75". I had to add a 1/4" for the outer lip. Would a 2" spacer push the tires beyond the fendert? Precise1, you say that your tread is actually 10.5? With my 8" tread I guess I would need a 2" spacer to get my tires flush.

Looks really good though. Makes me want to get 31" tires for my path, too bad I'm not comfortable mounting it on my 6.5" stock rims

I have about the same clearance if not a bit less between the strut and tire with my 31X10.5X15 Wrangler Territory tires. Never been an issue but anything bigger would be. I have them on factory 15X7 rims with 1.57"(40mm)offset. I did have one barely touch the inner fender somewhere during a rather fast full lock reverse turn in a snowy bumpy parking lot, but just that once and that wasn't "normal" driving.

I've never had an issue either. That gap never changes because the strut moves with the wheel.

 

I can't edit my post for some reason (post count?) but I forgot to add that I don't have any issue with rubbing, not even in full lock. Due to bad struts, the tires that were on the front (now in the back) are almost to the wear bars so I'll probably replace all the tires with 30x9.5 tires soon. I'm also adding 2" spacers and I'm afraid I'll have issues rubbing with 31"s.

 

EDIT: I can edit now! I guess 15 post is the magic number!

31's seem a bit small with any amount of lift IMO. I have a chance of buying really cheap 33x12.5 on 15x8's and am super tempted to go get them. I have a 2" lift with spacers and have new extended struts and shocks on the way. Should I go for it or update my order of 31" Duratrecs to 32x11.5" BFG M/Ts? From the pics I've seen in this thread, 32x11.5 seem to match and fit the dimensions of a lifted R50 best. I find 33's can almost seem to doughnutty if you know what I mean and 31's too small.

I'm pretty happy with my 31's and they do rub at full lock (even with 1.25 spacers) with 2" of strut spacers and lift springs. remember the bigger the tires the harder the engine works, and fuel consumption goes through the roof.
