Take the skid plate off and turn the alt by hand from underneath. It's a stupid location to put an alt, but it is easy to work on. Even easier if you remove the shroud. Since the belt's already off, check 'er out and report back.

hmmmm I'm gonna go against B and say the timing belt. It might be other things, but like you said, you have no idea of it's past maitainence, and who knows the last time it was changed. It happened right after you were climbing a hill, and if it was old and worn, this may have streched it past it's point. My other clue is the turning over. If it's doing that, then most likely the fuel system is ok, but don't rule that out either. The reason I say that is a clogged filter will sputter before it dies, it's a gradual thing, not snap. As prior mentioned, see if the ECU fires anything at you, grab a new fuel filter just in case, and hope for the best. Good luck bud. M.M.

Hmmmm, I don't recall mine lookin like that. I'd send that pic directly to Thorley and see what they say. I had some email interaction with them while I was shopping around for headers. They were quick to respond, and very informative about their product specs. I'd see what they say. You might bring up that you know others who have the same and they didn't have the ridge like that.
-
If you have another set of wheels, I'd say pull it and open her up and take a gander to see if it's anything of the prior mentioned. From the vibration complaint, my guess would be the bearings.
-
Upgrade!!! Time for headers. I love em, best move I ever made, sounds cool too.
-
Got me on that one, I did it all myself.
-
Here it is, original config. I'll let you know how the new set up works in 3k miles
-
I'll see if I can find a pic how I intially set it up. It worked fine, however, it made a bigger mess than before whenever I changed my filter due to all the oil in the lines draining out. I just reconfigured it on a bracket so it's straight up and down, then put 90 degree nipples on the filter adapter to keep the lines from draining out. No pics of that yet, I'll drag a camera along tomarrow.

Actually it's not really that wierd. Every rotating object has a natural vibration frequency. If something's outta whack, and that vibration increases in amplitude (read gets worse) it would be entirely possible that it happens @ 30 as you are compounding the problem with the natural frequency.

I just ordered a set from summit on Monday, and they arrived toady. And to make it even better, they tossed in a free summit racing hat. I guess I was the lucky winner, or I have finally ordered enough stuff from them to warrent a freebie.

9K's are great if you don't mind crawling down and adjusting, but spendy. They make a auto adjust kit, but even the salesman at the shop I got the shocks from said not to waste my time with it. 5K's are a good mid road, not too soft, not too hard, react well on the trail. I've also heard good things about Pro Comp's but haven't tried em or payed attention to the response, as I don't have em.

1) Summit racing, PN PRM-10695 Order here 2)Fel-Pro make good gaskets, call summit and ask 3) Probly, but copper would be better, but then again, I used the ones that came with the headers and haven't had any problems 4) YES!!! 5) Sorry I'm in the bay area

Still need to trim mine.

Hmmm interesting. My theory is if I'm gonna replace it, might as well upgrade it. Knowing that the manifolds are way to restrictive, I opted for tholey's ceramic headers as well. No being ceramic and not just the nickle coated ones, they will last a bit longer due to the fact they remove the heat slightly better. Now as far as send your's back, thats' just your call. Some one wiser than me once said, "To get the most out of these engine's you have to get them breathing and farting right." Well mine's been fartin just fine for a year now, no "heat" issues under the hood, and if I drive nice, I actually get a mpg increase. Seem to me, if you already have em, stick with em, but that's just my 2 pyreals.

Yeah, I lengthened mine. It's easy enough, rather than figuring how to remount the bugger. For some reason, everything's about together, and I still have a pile of bolts from the kit left.
-
I looked at her Birthday tag, and she was born December '90, so that just might be the case. Hmmmmm very interesting.
-
Hehe, that why when I did my exhaust, I just ripped all the old stuff out, put in the headers myself, bought the goodies from one shop, and took it to another to get welded up. He asked what happened to the old Cat, I told him I smashed the exhaust on a rock off road, and it was wrecked.
-
This may sound copletely stupid, but the front is open, correct?
-
Ok, blocks are in. I had a slight mishap though. Just as I was tightening the last bolt in the front driverside corner, it sheared off at the nut. DOH, a bit too tight. oh well. I'll have to run and get another tomarrow. Ok here's the wierd part. So I have '91, and the kit is a PA for 87-90, so guess what? All the bolts supplied by that kit fit just fine. Didn't need to get anything extra. Tomarrow I'll go get the replacement bolt, and I'm just gonna lengthen the power steering hoses, mod the radiator hoses, finally put in the oil cooler 88 gave me, and re-configure my relocated oil filter a bit. After all that, I'm gonna mess with my grill a bit (you'll see) and wire up some aux back up lights. I'd have to say, so far, so good. The fun continues tomarrow...........

Yeah, I put a cone K&N on mine and it whistles/ whine all the time at all rpm's. I have had it on there for about a year now, and I haven't gotten tired of it. Since the pitch of it follow the motor, I fool people all the time into thinkin I have a turbo. It'd be nice, but not quite the same.
-
Don't get me wrong, I really like the other two designs. I'm just thinking about my poor printer's ink. at 50 bucks a shot for black, and 80 for color, I'm lookin for the simplest one, ya know.
-
KILL, I'm gonna steal your design and put my name on it. Cool?
-
Sounds like mine. Need a new steering box, cause mine binding on itself.
-
Good move B. If she actually got a closer look at you, you might be road kill right now.

Psssssst............Awww crap, I can't poke fun at a country that gave me so many hangovers at 19 on those weekend trips from Washington and that even invented hockey, can I now eh?
