Timing Belt

I did search and nothing really answered but I just bought a 95 pathfinder and the owner seemed clueless to if he had changed the timing belt so.......How do I find out if I need to change the timing belt? Thanks

If the previous owner does not know if it was done... And you got the records for the servicing of the Pathy and are not finding a reciept....

 

Assume it has not been changed.... 95's should have the 105k belt(Rounded Teeth)

 

I would suggest getting both the Haynes and Chiltons Manuals. Someone here should have the FSM on a PDF file.

 

It is not extremly complicated to change, between Chiltons and Haynes its pretty much covered.

 

Time, patients and maybe a call or two to 1.888.69S.LICK :hide:

 

Total time on changing the my T-Belt, minus the waiting till the next day to get the correct (Rounded Teeth) about 3 hours.

 

 

While your in there, change the water pump and T-Stat...

It is recommeded to change the t-belt every 60k miles, if you are not sure then I would strongly recommend to change it, along with the t-stat, water pump, and radiator hoses while you are in there. If the t-belt breaks, then it would cost you a lot more to repair the vavles after they bend.

Thanks I actually had a timing belt go on me one time in a Pontiac and it was a ugly ending.

 

If I was to bring it to the dealer approximately how much would it cost to do?

If you do not know when last it was changed.. save your self the potential disaster and change it now (if mileage is close or past recommended interval)

 

Another thing to look at while in there is the water pump. You will have it torn down to that point anyway.

 

Oh and its also a good time to change all the exterior belts since you will have them off anyway. :aok:

It's between $700 and $1100 for the dealership to do one, with the water pump, belts and hoses. I HAD a &^%*@$# complete write-up on how to change the t-belt on my forums before they got hacked into and destroyed. The 87-93's (usually)have the 60K change interval, the 94-up have a 105,000 mile change interval.

As 88 stated, the 94 & 95's have a 105k mile pm change for the timing belt. Having them fail is not funny... How many miles on your truck ? If it is unknown, assume it has never been changed. I'm sure you can do the math.... The timing belt is less than $50, and if it is done, general consensus is to check/change the cam seals, bypass hose, waterpump and thermostat ? (not sure on the last)

Parts for all that are about $300, labor at a dealership is maybe $800 ?? If you have the means, this is a do it yourself job $ saver. Only tricky part is futzing with the new belt and plenty of people here can walk you through it. The rest is just labor...

Let me second, third, and fourth all of the above reccomendations. My timing belt DID break about three weeks ago, completely trashing the heads. I have discovered that a decent used engine is comparable to the price for new or rebuilt heads. I will have spent well over a thousand dollars when this repair is finished. If there is any question about when your TB has been changed last, DO IT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE! I was planning to do mine this summer, and now i have to pay the (heavy) price of procrastination.

:unsure: looks like you've got your advice... now ..... GO DO IT! :P oh.. and if yer in any way mechanically inclined, you can save yerself a buttload of $$ by doing it yourself. H2o pump, t'stat, can seals and t-belt.. hey presto.. for under $150. that would leave you upwards of $400 for other goodies sly

How many miles did you have on the belt that broke? I will have it changed ASAP, wondering if any mechanics in the NY area that wants to make some cash and tackle this, I don't have the time or proper tools to tackle this.

it's not just a case of how many miles if one breaks, if they are wrongly installed they can break/come off within a matter of miles/minutes.

do u have pictures of ure heads?...i know i broke 1 at about 50mph going up hill and hit the clutch which i think saved me...i ended up eating 3 valves but it didnt mess up the heads or pistons

 

that was a result of not chaging the TB when i did the w/p b/c it only had like 10k on it and i didnt know that antifreeze broke down the belt's strength so it took 3 days to pull the heads and rebuild the top half with 1 day of down time in waiting for the correct valves

My engine had 230,000 miles on it, and i had no idea when the belt had been changed last. I bought the truck not knowing anything about the service history other than it had a new windshield (which was badly installed), and a fresh oil change. The truck ran like a champ until the moment the TB broke, so i was not super concerned about getting it changed immediately, which was very unfortunate.

Mine blew at 224k miles, 20 miles after I put the 3" Calmini lift on.

 

Had lunch with a friend of mine today that has a 95SE, He paid $650 for the T-belt, water pump, T-stat and new drive belts at the dealership......

I had one go in a HB I had, long story....

 

First thing I did when I bought both of my current ones was to change the T-Belt (actually got a $500 check from the used car place to get it done on my 93 when I bought it B) ).

Getting the timing belt changed this week along with water pump, T-stat and my mechanic said to change the tensioner. I plan on going to the dealer to get the parts myself. Thanks everyone for your help.
