nunya
74 Chevy K30 SRW plow truck. Blade was stuck at full right tilt, no guides on it to know where the blade was, popped out of 3rd gear if you thought about moving your hand from the shifter, cammed up big block that would NOT idle, no power steering, and on 33s. The hatred I had for that truck...

The hatred I had for that truck... THIS deserves a thread all it's own! I really want to hear more of this story Holy CRAP! That has got to be one of the worst vehicles for learning to drive on. Pops out of 3rd if you even thought about letting go of the shifter, driving one handed no power steering and it wouldn't idle so while you're wrestling with the rest of this beast with the blade you can't raise or turn, big tires and no power steering, (one handed in 3rd!) you also couldn't take your foot off the gas for longer than a few seconds! Oh man! Hopefully you were atleast a young man, early 20s maybe by this time, right? Not like 15 - 16 years old....dear God...So I'm guessing you learned to shift into neutral and brake left footed like driving a 6,000 lb go-kart, right? You had to keep the engine running, but also stop too....What an experience.
kdj
1954 Cockshutt tractor followed by a 1969 510 Datsun stickshift fieldcar for stadards. First time with an auto was a '60 Rambler American followed by a '60 Chevy pickup hay truck that we had for years. My first car was a '62 Plymouth Belvedere with a push button auto when I was 14. After the pushbutton I've never owned another standard. After my first auto I'll never go back.
nunya
Nope, 14-15 (I have a winter birthday) learned to plow the lot that winter too. Backed into the same phone pole countless times... Was a great day originally replacing that with the 76 K10 we used for a while that recently got redone and don't see plow duty anymore, even better the day we scrapped it. I would have loved to have learned on a little FWD compact...
SkiBumBrian
You have got to be kidding... B nope. That car was cool. Built by BMW, steering column on U-joints to swing out with the door, left hand shift..... I grew up on a ranch in rural WA so I drove the ranch truck ( 67 Chevy) to feed horses, change sprinklers, stretch fence, etc, since I was 11. Got a farm license at 14 which allowed me a 5 mile radius of the property which included the whole town. The Isetta was the first car that was actually mine. Kept frying the VR though, it sat right between the 2 seats and people kept stepping on it. Drove it to the BMW shop in Seattle a few times in the back of the pickup to get fixed but Dad finally got tired of that. Sold it for 50 bucks. Sure wish I had it now! Precise1
Damn! I know exactly what they are and I'm jealous. I'm sorry you no longer have it as well, like you said, they are cool. Probably worth a lot by now as well... Oh well, hindsight... B

SpecialWarr
I think it was an early eighties Renault LeCar.. poo brown... poo brown interior... and it was not mine nor did I know the owner.... nor did he know that I took it out for a short drive one early Sunday morning after a small party.... I did put it back after being stopped by the local police for a few minutes.
kdj
One of the last sticks I drove was a '82? LeCar...a white one we called LeToaster. Shortly after I was T-boned by a drunk driver that crushed my left foot, so no more clutching for me. But you should see me hand shift my ATV. It's a 5 speed! cmathews23
97 Nissan p/u. I was working in cleanup at the dealership I work at now and didn't know how to drive one at the time. New car manager pages me to come to the showroom and take the truck to cleanup. Told him I couldn't cause I didn't know how to drive a stick yet. So he called a salesman and made him teach me how to drive it. So I learned in some guys brand new p/u. I was kinda nervous to say the least, but I did learn and now currently trying to teach my wife which is not going very well lol.
Manik
First experience in a stick shift, I was 12 years old, in a 69 Chevy K5 Blazer with a straight 6 and 3 on the tree. Oh, 8 inch lift kit on 40" super swampers. Not a good experience, took out a boat and a BBQ pit. Next was a 73 Chevy Cheyenne "Heavy Half" with a 350 and 3 on the tree. Loved that truck, drove it most of the way through high school back in the 80's. Oh, no A/C or power steering. It was a beast. Bubba.....

KovemaN
1978 Toyota N30 pickup AKA "The Brown Turd". Funny that it's not the first "poo" colored vehicle on the list. I hit a chicken on my first drive (gravel road in the country). I really learned to drive in a 1987 Honda Accord. She went to 350,000 miles and was sold running and driving. Every vehicle I've ever owned for more than a few months has been a manual. I honestly get confused when driving an automatic. Clutch reflex + fat brake pedal = new pants for passengers and tailgaters.
kdj
So you're the one that ran over my chicken! I live on a gravel country road and lost one in a 1978 accident. . If you cann't drive an auto...stay out of farm areas.
