Who sells CBs anymore?

I want to get one now that the CD player is taken care of (thank you parents) but I'm not sure where to look. I know none of the major electronics stores carry them so I'm not sure where to look.

Any places in Spokane?

I have a pretty good Uniden from Truck City CB over the mountains near Seattle, but I noticed the same model at Walmart a while back. If anything, maybe you could buy a good model cb at somewhere like Walmart, then buy the appropriate and better quality accessories at a better shop.

Oh, and do you guys have GI Joes over there? They had a few to choose from last I looked.

Interesting. No we don't have GI Joes here unfortunately, but we do have Sportsman's Warehouse and there's a Flying J and a brand new Petro nearby. I think I'll go there or Wally World to look. My buddy recommended a K40 antenna. He's got a Uniden and a K40 and it works well. Thanks

That's what I've got, works great. I went with a whip style antenna cause of fear branches and stuff might kill a stiff Firestik.

I got a Cb for 2 dollars at the thrift store and I have a fiberglass antenna on a spring. Hopefully branches don't take it out.

And this one time, at band camp....

WTF..., let us know when you finally make contact with the ATLiens

CB ha!

Go get your HAM license and get a MANS radio :P

just my .02 cents :D

But seriously,

before I used ham radio I fooled around with CB a lot.... and I never found too much difference in the cheaper models and the more expensive models.. except for the bells and whistles.. Also Remember that CB's are limited too 4 watts for AM transmitter and 12 watts for Single Side Band (SSB) transmitter... so as long as you get one that uses close too the power limit it should be a good one.

Also invest in a good antenna... generally speaking the taller the antenna the better it will work.

I would also recommend if you install one that you install a fuse on the + and - side of the wires.. in case you ever have a short in your car.

Ham is better, but unfortunately, the majority of off roaders have CB's, and that is all I use mine for - on the trails.

Or I tune to ch 19 to monitor just how how many times Cletus can use profanity in a single sentence. I think his record is 18.... Fortunately, he is so out of shape he had to stop to take a breath!

  • 4 years later...

I'm going to get a CB radio and a HAM radio once I get my license for it.

What's the good in having a radio although if nobody else has the same kind that you are wheeling with?

You can say you have something they don't B)

Now you guys are talk'n radio...

[steps up to soap box]

So which do i prefer ham or CB?... well... BOTH!

pathfinder-ham-radio-install.jpg

I honestly only have CB because a ton of 4-wheelers have cb. However, there has been a shift and ham radio is getting more and more popular. I've been a ham radio operator for 11 years and I simply couldn't explain all the advantages to having this on the trail in one post but here are a few keys points. Generally when you find a ham radio on the trail it's a radio in the 144 - 148mhz range (2Meter band) which works much better in canyons and on the trail than the CB band in the 27mhz range. not only that but to keeping things legal, radio on CB frequencies is limited to 4 watts. With ham radio legally you can go to 1500 watts <[No thats not a typo]

So on the propagation differences with the different frequency ranges and power output differences alone... ham radio is a clear winner. if you're ever on a trail like the rubicon or some other mountainous area and need to call for help with nothing but a CB, you're going to have a heck of a time getting some assistance.

Also with ham radio there are repeaters on mountain tops all over the world, these function as a wireless amplifier from high elevation. As you can probably figure, higher elevation equals more range... and guess what?!? there are even repeaters on board orbiting satellites that are free to use by ham radio operators.. hows that for elevations?!?

Any CB will work nearly as well as any CB can on 4 watts as long as you run a good coax cable and have a properly tuned antenna.

but in either case quality coax and a tuned antennas are very important, and in my opinion more important than the radio itself.

I like either export CB radios or 10 meter Ham radios modified for Cb, more channels more power, for antennas if you don't mind drilling a hole I would recommend a Wilson 1000 or do the magnet mount, nice because you can remove the base/whip if you need to, if you run a fiberglass whip such as a firestick, you can add a quick release adapter and than swap what ever length antenna you normally use for a shorter one say if you were wheeling in the woods, the shorter antenna would be fine to communicate with others in your group and less banging around on everything.

Currently do not have a CB installed in my pathfinder but I have a few to choose from lying around including my RCI 2970, a Summerkamp (export version of the RCI 2950) and a Galaxy Pluto (export version of a Cobra 148 GTL but with freq counter), antennas I have a Wilson 1000 perm mount, 4' and 2' firesticks
