  1. For an area that you don't want to revisit for 100K miles I would go with Toyota FIPG, order online or Permatex Ultra Copper, buy local (both are High quality RTV choices) I know I said this, but make sure its clean and oil free when you apply it. This includes fingerprint oils. both sides of the gasket and on the housing face and on the bolt threads.
  2. No, you leave the "over fill" it in there. the original fill level did not fully submerge the 5th gear bearing among other things. The fill hole on the transmission was located 1" too low by mistake from the factory. I am partial to Redline MT90, and I usually get it directly from redline in gallon containers. They are really quick about shipping if you live on the west coast. It is formulated specifically for Nissan transmissions. I've run this fluid in sub zero temperatures in WA state and 115 weather here in SoCal and I change it every 5 years. If you are trying to save some coin look for STA-LUBE 75w90 or 80w90 GL-4 usually have it on the shelf. I think Its probably your best bet for a local option. Most brands stocked in other auto stores are only GL-5, stay away from GL-5 it is not compatible with the Nissan Synchronizers.
  3. You can with the RMS housing out and I hope it lasts for you. Make sure you get the old seal (or curved portion) out completely and clean/dry thoroughly before sealing a new curved arch in there with FIPG.
  4. My buddy got back to me. These are his words on the gasket:
  5. leave the dust shield alone, it will be fine as is. RTV is optional but it doesn't hold back any fluids.
  6. Sorry, I think I missed that the oil pan was actually leaking. There are 2 styles of oil pan seals let me double check with my friend on which style yields the better result. There is a 1-piece that goes all the way around and there is a 4-piece that has 2 sides and 2 curves.
  7. The TX10A transfer case is acceptable to use with Gear oil or ATF. Based on each fluids characteristics my opioion is to run them accordingly: ATF (DEX III) is cheaper and sold everywhere, but offers very little in the way of shock loading. Good for daily drivers and highway use while still being an offload vehicle. Gear oil (GL4) limited quantities and brands found in auto stores. (I prefer to order Redline MT90 online by the gallon for my transmissions). Greater film thickness and shock loading. Good for the dedicated wheeler or anyone who wants the added protection. possibly slight reduction in MPG due to thicker viscosity in Conventional GL4 oils, even less with SYN GL4 oils like MT90. The Housing peels right out once the bolts are removed but the semicircle seal under the housing has a tendency to leak after the housing has been re-installed and the best way to re-seal it is to pull the pan and do a full seal job with the housing in place.
  8. The pan has to come off to get sealed. The book may referee removing the RMS housing to remove the RMS SEAL... THIS IS WRONG, removing and re-installing the housing almost always leads to a future pan leak. Leave the housing in place and use a seal puller. I did not learn this one from personal experience but rather from a friend who has built hundreds of Nissan engines. I took his advice rather than learning the hard way because oil pans are PITA on a 4x4...
  9. Also something to be said about Nissan Seals... When I built my new engine the rebuild kit came with all OE branded gaskets but some other brand seals. Both cam seals started puking after 7k (your supposed to change them every 100k, so they failed at 7% of its change interval) I got some OE seals (Timken or SKF if you shop locally) and now I can r
  10. How many hours did it take to get to this point? How many hours until you are able to drive it again? How much grunting, cussing and knuckle busting was involved in the whole job? If the RMS started leaking a week after you got it all back together how would your feel about doing all the above AGAIN? For reference, my RMS had 15k on it when I was in there and I STILL CHANGED IT. Estimated RMS life expectancy is up to 200k and I STILL CHANGED IT. See that sleeve around the input shaft? At the base of the sleeve there is a weep hole so that any leaking gear oil goes straight down into the bell instead of dripping all over your clutch. Its a safety feature that lets you have a leak without ruining your drive home. FYI if you do need to change that seal it goes in from behind, once all the bolts are out DO NOT USE THE SLEEVE FOR LEVERAGE OR HAMMERING it will break off. There is a tab on the bottom left and bottom right of the casting that you can use for leverage. This one really sucks if the factory paper gasket needs removal/cleaning (re-install with a wet RTV gasket makes easier next time) If its not leaking I would still do it if it has more than 50k on it. See above for reasoning.
  11. There's no seal there. That's a cast in Boss to receive for the pivot pin of the t-case shifter. In other words is solid aluminum keep looking for another source maybe its leak down from someone filling the trans from the top. ...
  12. you don't have to pull off the door, just the panel you have pictured.
  13. I think There were 3 sizes of speakers that came in pathfinders. 1)The 2 doors got round 5.5" and most 6" could easily be mounted in its place if you remove the reducing ring from the door The 4 doors came with 5x7 or 6x9 2)IIRC the 5x7 had a metal reducing ring which needs to be used with the new speaker. 3)The 6x9 came in the premium sound packages and had a resin impregnated enclosure the speaker sits into. The opening on the back of the enclosure faces down to improve bass and reduce window rattle. This is based on my 89, 93, 94 and many pathfinders I've seen in junk yards.
  14. Yes and no. Given your career training and experience you probably already know this but I'll put it out there anyway. In most vehicle collisions a properly mounted child seat will move a few inches. No matter how hard you strap a seat down it should be allowed to move about and inch under a firm tug. It should also be able to push into the cushion by about an inch under a firm shove. This inch of movement reduces the declaration/acceleration forces that are transferred to the child seat. Snug is good but using ratchet straps so its completely rigid is bad. I think An extreme example would be you if had 2 identical children (ok test dummies) in one car and one was in a seat belted car seat and the other was in a car seat firmly bolted to a roll cage. Then run the car into a wall. I think The child seat bolted to the roll cage would suffer severe bruising from the shoulder straps because the deceleration is INSTANT and possibly internal head trauma from the brain moving inside the skull etc. On the other hand I think The child in the lap belt car seat would have a few inches of deceleration as the belt pulled tight against is anchors and the injuries would be less.
  15. This is a good reason to upgrade to a VG33. Front mount oil Filter near the Steering box with the open side Pointing up FTW!!!
  16. IIRC the electrical difference between a Z24i and a vg30i is the ECU and the distributor. (yes the 2 injectors and the throttle body are the same) so if you find a complete VG30i with ECU it should be all plug and play. The bell housing patter is different so you would have to do a trans swap as well. Anything else requires a rewire of the engine electrical but KA24, VG30, VG33 and TD27 are known fits with factory parts. Matching transmissions will be required...
  17. yes the pumpkin is the 3rd member. Each shaft has to come out a few inches and pumpkin will unbolt from the housing and come out. 87-95 pathfinder 3rd members will all fit but some of them have a thrust block that the shafts would but up to. This thrust block must be removed if your axles do not slide all the way in. There are 4 bolts holding each axle in place but I highly recommend disconnecting the the parking brake, unbolt the the caliper and hang it in the wheel well so you can fully remove the shaft. Reason being is the axle seals are over 20 years old and when we partially pull the shafts we tend to "hang" the shaft on the seal which stretches/wears/cracks the seal and can lead to leaks. So now is a good time to pull the shaft all the way and change the "inner" oil seals. Go with Timken of SKF if you want them to last another 20 years. The "outer" seals can be left alone(lot of extra work) they are a grease only seal and will not leak as long as your inner seal is good.
  18. "Because race car" Its fun! Where I live you sometimes encounter 80+ mph traffic (128+ km) My wife's truck struggles a little with this on the flat 5 lane freeways but my modified 3.3 passes people uphill even on the steep mountain passes at theses speeds. Sure a pathfinder has all the power it needs for trail runs, I never wanted for power on the trail even trail riding my half dead vg30tbi but everywhere that the roads are paved I did want it.
  19. I have no personal experience with them yet but members on here have installed their S1 cams and been happy with them in N/A application. http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/topic/15422-fitting-of-jtw-s-1-billet-cams-in-a-vg33e-engine/
  20. Hey, that's what I've got... (Just not assembled yet) JWT S1 Cam (ground from new cam blank) power comes in about 2k and up. (will be going into my vg34er) or call Isky and tell them what you want (reground). I'm running a Euro cam myself in a 3.3 and its decent. A little More power 3k to 5k no loss in bottom end.
  21. lol what is this? They have some big rule against it or something? Work sometimes gives me more internet time than the kids do.

  23. Welcom After the baking soda and vinegar RENT a good steam cleaner or Resolve wet vac from your local Large chain grocery or hardware store. As far as finding the factory amp, some vehicles had two (8 speaker premium sound, I think one included a noise filter for the tweeters) and if you are running an aftermarket stereo both should be bypassed.
