Resetting The Ecu On An 89 Pathy 3.0L
JamesRich replied to krmiller07's topic in 86.5-89 WD21 Pathfinders
They have it backwards. The system runs in open loop with preset values until the motor reaches operating temp, then it goes into closed loop. In closed loop it monitors all the sensors to give you the correct fuel mixture. Everything must be in good order to function properly, even a loose or coroded ground could cause problems. I wish these trucks would be like the newer OBDII system that can give you live data. That way you could look at the sensor values to see if they are working properly. The only way to check these sensors is to back probe them but you must know what values they are supost to run at. First you must make sure your ignition system is in good shape then go to the emission system. With the limited data the computer gives us to trouble shoot I really wish someone made a replacement intake and carburetor setup. James -
Cool so they are working like they are supposed to! It figures I wouldn't discover this until after taking the doors apart. It was a real pain to get unlocked especially the passenger door. I didn't want to force them and break the plastic clip I read about some guys having trouble with so I would just jiggle it until it would unlock. It was getting to where I didn't want to lock it, but I don't trust the parking lot at work. The white lube fixed them up though, they unlock very easy now even without the solenoid. My windows still sound like they are straining to roll back up. I greased the tract well and will hope for the best. James You guys are the best owners manual I could hope for!

I just found out that my 87 SE has power locks! There is no switch anywhere in the truck so I figured it only had power windows and not locks. I pulled the door panels to lube up the regulator tracts. Also the doors were hard to unlock with the key or the knob inside. When I got the panel off the driver door I saw a lock solenoid inside. I figured maybe the door had been changed at one time and they just didn't take it out. I started spraying white lube on the latch mechanism and I pulled on the lock rod and both doors and the rear hatch locked. I tried with the key and now when I lock and unlock the driver door the passenger door and rear hatch lock and unlock. I guess when the key was hard to turn I never turned it far enough to actuate the power feature. Is this the only way to use the power lock feature or was there a switch on the console? My console has a blank hole that might have had a switch. The Haynes manual doesn't have anything about power locks. This little truck is full of surprises. James

Here's one https://www.4x4parts.com/catalog/pathfinder-inch-body-lift-p-277.html It's half the price of the 3" suspension lift. And you don't have to get it aligned after. I have heard people talk about rollers for boat trailers too. I prefer suspension lifts because you get more ground clearance. James

so if the "other" injector isn't working will it throw a code or just run weak? I didn't do the self diagnosis but used my old snap-on scanner to check my ECM when I first got the truck and it was clear. My truck runs smooth just has no power. If I give it a little throttle or floor it there is no difference in acceleration. I haven't had a chance to really go through it but there is nothing obvious wrong. I will have to look at them with my timing light to see if they both spray. Will just revving it hard in neutral make the other injector spray? James

It's easy to test your coil. Have someone else turn the key for you while you place your finger on the coil wire. If you feel nothing coil is bad. If you jump backwards a little coil is weak. If you pee on yourself coil is good! James Fine print: this is only a joke, don't try it!

Sure I'd like to see ideas. Is it a mount for the factory bumper or a whole new bumper? James

It's a AR15 I built in 243 WSSM. It pushes a 95 grain bullet at 3100 fps (I checked it on a chrono) At 300 yard it only has 9" of drop. I haven't had a chance to push it further than that but use my Iphone program to calculate drops. So far its been right on. James

I'm not worried about them getting in the way, you guys probably never been off roading in south Louisiana. We don't have big rocks and very few hills to climb just lots and lots of mudd! Once I get my pathy ready to hit the hunting lease I will post pics of what I will be riding through. Here's a few pics from last year on my quad. This is what happens when it rains too much. This is one of the roads that cuts through the middle of our lease. This is part of a trail going to one of my hunting areas. This is a little further down the trail where it starts getting a little deep. It was a little over a foot and a half. I sometimes have water coming over the headlights. A little rattling in the dark when you cant see because your headlights are under water and there are guys like this swimming around. Check out that shot, a few inches behind his head with my berreta 40 cal about 15 feet away. And I'll finish up with a pic of my last deer getter. May it rest in peace. It gave me 12 hard years rolling thought the crap and getting me back out. I will get some good pics of the pathy in action once I get her ready. I need tires first and then build a bumper for a winch because where I will be going no one else's truck will be able to come get me out. James

The nissan nurf bars are pretty darn strong! I got a set off of a 93 at a pick-a-part. They sit there vehicles on rims welded together. On this pathfinder they had set the rims under the nurf bars toward the front of the truck and they didn't bend, they were holding up the front of the truck. I got the guy on the forklift to raise the front of the truck so I could reposition the rims under the frame, then I pulled off the step bars. The front brackets that wraps around the frame were bent a little but a little massaging with a hammer fixed that problem. James

My wife's 01 quest with the 3.3L broke the timing belt and didn't bend any valves, so you might get lucky. James

I was searching winches here the other day and found a post on a R50 with a winch built into the grill. It almost looked factory installed. http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=16414&hl=winch+mount James I'm finally getting good at searching huh!

The clutch uses DOT4 fluid? James

Thank man, I will see what I can do. I will be mounting a big power inverter in the back (hedge trimmers beats swinging a machete any day) and was thinking about putting a optima battery back there with it. If I can find a spot under the hood it will save me some funds by getting a regular battery. James

You have a 180 amp ford alt on your pathy? I must have missed that one while searching. What is it off of and was it hard to mount up? Good to know it works with one V belt. I figured someone would let me know after posting that. Sure I'd like to see some pics. I don't have an air box to move on my 87 just some pollution crap. I had done this on my old 90 model Chevy pickup when I was running a big CB amp. I got the driver side battery box for a diesel truck and just moved the charcoal canister to mount it. The inner fender already had dimples where the holes needed to be. Very easy install. Did the diesel pathys have two batteries? James

+2 It gets hot down here in south Louisiana! I've seen 104 on the outside temp gage on my titan, and I know thats nothing for states like Arizona but its still hot. So where are you planning to mount the second battery? James Also remember guys, a single V belt may not be enough to turn a 180 amp alternator at full output. Anyone try switching to a vrib belt system from one of the many other Nissan's with a similar V6?

I only live 4 miles from work and its all start and stop driving but I do get to higher speeds than 15 to 20. Most of the dumb Ass drivers around here want to drive 30 and 35 in a 55 mph zone, so my drive to work could be pleasant if it weren't for stupid people. I take my bike most of the time unless its raining. When gas hit $4 a gallon a couple of years ago I bought a motorcycle hoping to get 50 to 60 mpg. But when I walked into the dealer I fell in love with the biggest sport cruiser they had on the floor. A Suzuki boulevard 109. It was just so bad ass looking stock! So my average fuel mileage back and forth to work is 34 mpg, but it's better than the 13 to 14 in the titan. I still have not checked the mileage in the pathfinder, it may be just as bad as yours. My drive is not as bad as yours but I do pass alot. My other average in the titan is 15 and 18 to 19 on the highway and the boulevard averages 37 and 45 to 50 on the highway. These figures show how much I run the hell out of them going to work driving with idiots and cell phones. James

Damn I get better than that in my Titan! At least most of the time. James

Great job on speaker placement! For the cb radio, I found a lower housing in a 93 that mounts right below the stereo. I guess it was for an EQ or something for the radio. I think it would make a perfect place to mount a CB radio. Would look almost factory installed. I would get a picture but I haven't put it in yet. Maybe someone else already has and can post a pic. James

Awesome! Thank for the review you answered my questions, now I will put a lock right on the list too. It just seems too good to be true that something with a good price and easy to install would hold up. James

Belive me when I say I'm lazy, All the work I've done so far is walk around the scrap yard with a pen and paper and then sit behind my computer and serch a little. The reason I want to go this route is for later when the alternator craps out I just get another one and bolt it up. Once again too lazy to modify another one. James

I'm working on a higher amp alternator right now. I'm too lazy to go through all the extra work to mount a quest alternator. So I walked through the local pick a part looking at different models that had alternators with the mounting bolts directly across from each other like our factory unit. Then I looked online to see what there amp output was. I don't have my list right now but newer model sentra and maxima are 110 amp and look like they would bolt right up. I'm not sure if the pulleys would line up yet I haven't gotten that far but will let y'all know when I get it done. It wouldn't have to be from a nissan, most internally regulated alternators only have three wires to make them work. With the right schematics I should be able to wire it up. James

If it is your lifters making the tick noise it is from varnish build up inside the lifters. You can try dumping a quart of marvel mystery oil in the motor with your next oil change. Cleans it out gradually so nothing gets plugged up. Just make sure you change your oil often. But like everyone else stated, if you can ignore it, it won't hurt anything. James

Just my luck the only pathy they have here in the Lafayette yard is a 93. They just crushed an 88 about 3 weeks ago. I'm always too late. James

Ok thanks for saving me the work man! Do you know what year they changed? James
