Hardbody Parking Brake in a Pathfinder?

Hey.

 

I know the mechanisms are completely different, but is it possible to utilize the hand Brake from under the dash on a hardbody to EFFECTIVELY work with the part of the cable where the Y joint is on the Pathy Rears with Disc Brakes? It would just be so nice to get rid of the handbrake between the seats all together and make/Use a Good console in that location.

 

Any thoughts to this?

of course it's possible. All you have to do is make the cable longer. It's just a mechanism that physically pulls a cable that puts pressure on the brakes. I have a HB with the parking brake that you are trying to get. It's cool, I like it. My friend said it's like the parking brake in an airplane LOL. It's better than the pump-action one on GM cars. It's cool, but it's nothing special really. For me, having the e-brake in the middle would be cool, but I guess it gets in the way sometimes. I have (had lol) the floor shifter auto, but I know there are also column shifters. If my parking brake was the one under the dash, maybe some HBs have the one in the middle? On my center console there is a cover-up plate for putting the brake in the middle.

 

It can definitely be done. You just have to add some cable and figure out the exact length considering stretch and other factors.

I would like to do this too, not for a bench seat but it would be easier to stuff any center console with out the brake in the way. I peeked under a pickup in the pick a part yesterday and it looked like it had some levers under there too instead of just cables. I'm sure it could be done but will require a lot of parts from the donor.

I thought I had read a while back that someone had done this but couldn't find it with the search.

did you guys want some pictures by the way? I know I'm nothing special just because I have a d21, but I could get some good pics if you need.

 

Yes please post pics of the whole system from start to finish so I can compare it to my pathy. I want cup holders damn it! lol tired of balancing my drinks on the side of the parking brake lever.

There are quite a few different models of this brake mechanism... the best for this mod is the unit that routes the cable under the carpet. The other units route the cable along the frame rail.. thus does not work well with the pathfinder cable system.

Were the different models year specific? Anyway to know which ones to look for?

Visually look at the cable routing before pulling it :shrug: gotta climb under it anyway to pull it and that would be my starting point for removal from a doner anyway as that's where you have a better chance of the doner parts breaking while removing

I have a 1997 2wd king cab D21 and that setup should work. The setup is nearly identical to the Pathfinder. If you have headers you will want to make a heat shield though. The cable routes fairly close to the exhaust and it will melt if not protected.

Ok. I made a video. It's finally up on youtube, but it's processing a little bit. Towards the end, the audio gets messed up. Youtube did this. I don't know what happened. I followed the whole system from start to finish. Now that I think about it, I didn't really include the mechanism for the parking brake itself. It's bolt-on, so NBD.

Where I show you were the cable comes out of the cab, the Pathfinders will probably have a cover plate. Just unbolt the cover plate and then you have access. That's how it was with my clutch pedal.

 

The audio is actually really messed up by youtube. The volume goes up and down, so watch out.

Did any hardbody's come with rear disk brakes? You look like you have drum style brakes and perhaps there's a difference with setups. I always thought they had a foot activation by the hood release. I never knew it was along ass handle next to the center console. Interesting.

LOL! yeah.. porno grunting. Makin' love to my red beauty. My torsion bars are cranked down a little bit (I haven't gotten around to adjusting them) so I just BARELY fit under the front of it. That and it was cold as hell.

 

I don't have rear disk brakes. I have drums. I'm not sure you even asked actually, but whatev. I don't think any HBs came with disks, just some Pathys. I don't know what the system for disk brakes is. Did they only come on high trim levels or 2wd or what? I think it's because of my whole rear end set up that doing a disk brake swap is so hard. For PFs it's not too bad, but apparently it's hell with a HB, or so I've read.

 

Foot activation? I thought only american cars and new imports had those? I hate that kind. My dad has a 79 Trans am with a clutch AND the foot parking brake. 4 PEDALS?!?!?!?! what is this I don't even...

 

Nah, I got that airplane style parking brake. I thought that's what you guys wanted to swap in?

OK... A little more information on this subject. Upon further research, there was a total of 3 Parking brake styles in a hardbody. 2 Lever Style and also a hand brake style. The one that you posted up 1994SE was the lever style in a 4WD vehicle and that one is not the one we are interested in. The hand brake style shares the same cable system and was offered in 4WD's as well. The one that we would be after is from a 2WD Hardbody. Now even the Lever itself is different then the 4WD version so nothing from the 4WD version would be any benefit really. Just as AK said,

This variation is the 2WD version. The parts we need consist of a total of 11 bolts and 1 connector. 4 Bolts and the connector at the lever, 2 bolts at the plate that runs it thru the floor, another 1 bolt a little farther back along the cable, and finally 4 more to the assembly that attaches it to the Joint axle wire like we have on our Pathy's This seems pretty straight forward and simple.

 

The biggest pain in the ass is going to be finding a 2WD Hardbody for me. there's not a wrecker anywhere near me that has one.

 

If anyone has a wrecker near them with one there or one sitting in there back 40 let me know.

Dowser, you quoted a person who said "the unit that routes the cable under the carpet". Isn't that the handbrake in the middle of the center console? If so, isn't that what Pathys have?

 

 

Finding a 2wd version around where I live will be so easy. They are a dime a dozen. Hey! In my apartment complex, there's 3 of them. One of them is a rust bucket with collapsed torsion bars and holes in the body as big as my fist. I wonder if he needs his parking brake...hmmm..

There is a 2wd hardbody in the jy here, but it is an 86 with the square dash.

Hey Adam, Do you know if its a regular cab or king cab? Looking into this further I have also noticed that the wheelbases of the hardbody's are a lot different due to the king cab option, and the long bed options. The correct donor for us would be a 2WD Regular cab with a regular box. It share Identical wheelbases as us.

 

I put up a request on the infamous nissan board since they are all 2wd guys there and got 2 people willing to sell, but one wants $100.00 bucks + shipping and that sounds a bit steep for a 14-26 year old truck. I wonder what the Wreckers near you would charge for it.

The wheel bases are oh, so slightly different. I think the difference between the short bed and regular bed is something like an inch or two. JUST enough for the beds to not be compatible with each other.

 

I question the legitimacy of this picture, but I think it's a good representation.

Sorry but that representation for measurement is not going to be accurate in the least. I prefer to get my information straight from a Factory Service Manual. The difference in Wheelbase of a Reg cab vs King cab is actually basically 12".

 

Pathfinder Wheelbase - 2650mm or 104.3in

Reg Cab Standard Wheelbase - 2650mm or 104.3

Reg Cab Long Wheelbase - 2950mm or 116.1in

King Cab and Heavy duty model Wheelbases are all 2950mm or 116.1in

 

The longer cable wouldn't be necessary in our application.
