Small aircraft engine perhaps? That would be a biatch to work on in a car unless the engine bay was designed for access for it. It would shorten things up by a foot or two. Imagine being able to see your front bumper... :shrug:

My first thought when I saw the engine was the Corvair engine, then the VW air cooled, I wonder if you could retrofit old VW engines with that design?

Only with an offset adapter to mate input/output shafts otherwise the bottom heads would be dragging on the ground.

 

But yeah, it is basically a radial opposed cylinder design VS the inline opposed cylinder like the aircooled VWs. My guess is that a 3 or 6 cylinder would run smoother and perhaps more efficiently.
