Anyone seen the details for this new recall:

Nissan is recalling nearly 420,000 SUV's because of possible corrosion in the tube where the gas is pumped. The recall includes 1997 to 2001 models of the Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX4 SUV's. For more information, call your local Toyota or Nissan dealer.

Toyota? Nissan service advisors are bad enough, why would I call some Bozoe at A Yota dealership??

I heard about this last night...a few questions:

1.) What about 96's?

2.) Why does this go to 01? I would have thought it would be to 1999.5, apparently not. Maybe EARLY 01's, with the 3.3? I thought all 01's came w/ the VQ?

01's did come with the VQ, but the fill tube is the same. Probably for all R50's. Maybe they had a certain supplier for them during that timespan, and have since found out they're no good.

I don't quite understand the Toyota dealership thing either.

The Toyota reference was because the news article was an announcement for both Toyota and Nissan recalls, probably would have made more sense with the full announcement:

Car Recall

Toyota is recalling optional all-weather floor mats that were in 55,000 Lexus ES 350 and Toyota Camry cars. Also, Nissan is recalling nearly 420,000 SUV's because of possible corrosion in the tube where the gas is pumped. The recall includes 1997 to 2001 models of the Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX4 SUV's. For more information, call your local Toyota or Nissan dealer.

I cant bring my pathy in until freakin November 6th. The corrosion is caused by salt on the roads from states that have heavy snowfall and it is only on these years of pathys because they were not adequetly coated with rust preventatives. The recall doesn't start until November and the states that are include are:

Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

If your seatbelts are loose as well, they have a lifetime warranty.

In related newsand in response to navygz19's post, Nissan recalled mugs that it handed out during a promotion that had been painted with more than 30% the allowable content. Nissan claims it didnt know who made the mugs, but I think I have one guess :)

Nissan doesn't tell their dealerships about recalls until about a few weeks after it is announced to the public. A lot of times we find out about recalls by customers calling in and asking about it. Nissan hasn't told us anything so we have no clue.

So I guess we do not get enough snow here in Canada to worry about this

ok so when should we all head over to our nearest nissan dealer to get this fixed. and it should be done at no cost right?

Yes, recalls are always under warranty. I would give it at least a month for the dealers to receive all the information and the parts to actually do the recall.

Stopped by Dorschel yesterday to pick up some parts, and the parts guy asked me if I knew about the recall....I went and set up an appointment...October 3rd. :) They're also doing my seatbelts.

thats funny. I asked my local nissan dealership about it and the guy didn't have a clue what I was talking about

Two points from the nhtsa link I haven't heard in the news:

"VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, TENNESSEE, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA , WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA" So if you don't live in one of those states maybe it was purchased there and would qualify.

"THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT NOVEMBER 26, 2007"

So let me get this straight, I'm not sure where my QX4 was originally purchased, but I'm pretty sure it was Indiana. I have been driving it there for the past 4 years, but only recently moved to Washington. (where Im not covered) Do you think I'll still get helped?

according to the post 2 posts up, you will be covered if it was originally purchased in Indiana.

  • 3 weeks later...

I guess here in Canada we are not getting the recall even though its on Transport Canada's website. I was just in contact with my dealer as well as Nissan Canada and they have no idea about this recall at all.

I did however find more info on this issue for those in the US ........

1. Manufacturer:

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

2. Vehicles Potentially Involved:

1997-2001 model year Nissan Pathfinder vehicles manufactured from May

24, 1997 to July 26, 2001 and 1997-2001 model year Infiniti QX4 vehicles

manufactured from May 24, 1997 to July 24, 2001. Vehicles manufactured

before these dates are not affected as a different coating process was used

for the fuel filler. Vehicles manufactured after these dates are not

affected because they use a different fuel filler tube. No other Nissan or

Infiniti models use the same fuel filler tube as the subject vehicles.

3. Total Number of Vehicles Potentially Involved:

Approximately 372,250.

4. Percentage of Vehicles Estimated to Actually Contain the Defect:

Unknown

5. Description of the Defect:

During the coating process of the fuel filler tube assembly, a sufficient

coating may not have been applied at the lower mounting bracket. This

could result in an opening in the coating which can allow water to enter and

make contact with the bare metal of the tube. This may result in surface

rust but not perforation of the tube. However, in those areas of the country

which use heavy concentrations of road salt in the winter, if a mixture of

snow/water and salt makes contact with the bare metal, corrosion may

occur to a degree which results in perforation of the tube. I n this case, fuel

leakage may occur when filling the tank or shortly thereafter.

The name and address of the manufacturer of the subject fuel filler tube is:

UNIPRES Corporation

Sun Hamada Bldg. 5F

1-19-20, Shin-Yokohama, Kohoku-ku, Yokohama-City, Kanagawa-Pref, 222-

8581 Japan

6. Chronoloay of Principal Events:

September - October 2006 - Nissan noted an unusual increase in parts

demand by dealers for fuel filler tubes for the subject vehicles. Nissan had

not previously experienced any increase in warranty claims for this part.

These parts were being ordered for vehicles which were out of warranty. In

order to determine the reason for the increase in parts demand, Nissan

arranged with a few dealers to obtain fuel filler tubes which had been

replaced. Subsequent inspection of these fuel filler tubes indicated that

they had experienced significant corrosion. Nissan decided to undertake a

more detailed investigation.

October 2006 - August 2007 - Nissan conducted an extensive parts

collection program and analysis to determine the cause of the corrosion,

the risk to motor vehicle safety and the scope of the potentially affected

vehicle population. This was complicated due to the age of the vehicles,

because parts collection involved customer paid repairs and not repairs

covered under warranty, which normally facilitates parts collection efforts.

In addition, during the lifecycle of the affected model, there has been a

running change to the powder coating process for the fuel filler tube, and a

later significant change in the actual design of the tube. The investigation

had to take into account these changes and component differences during

the extensive analysis.

September 5, 2007 - Nissan determined that a safety related defect exists

and that a voluntary recall campaign should be conducted.

7. Description of Corrective Action:

All owners of potentially affected vehicles will be notified. Owners of

vehicles in those states where heavy use of road salt can occur in the

winter will be requested to take their vehicle to a Nissan or Infiniti dealer.

These states include Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana,

Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New

Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,

Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia and

Wisconsin. The dealer will replace the fuel filler tube assembly with a new

one with an improved coating process. Nissan plans to begin notifying

owners of potentially affected vehicles on November 26, 2007 and to

complete notifying owners by May 2008. Dealers will be notified on

October 3, 2008.

Owners in the other states will be notified about this defect and advised

they do not need to take their vehicle to a dealer unless their vehicle was

operated in one of the above states for an extended period of time during

the winter or if they notice fuel leakage when filling the tank. For those

customers wishing to have their vehicles inspected, the fuel filler tube will

be inspected and replaced if corrosion is found that might result in

perforation of the tube.

C o ~ yof Notices:

Copies of all notices will be provided to NHTSA as they become available.
