  1. DOH !!! That does NOT sound like a good day !! Sorry to hear, I hate it when you screw something up while trying to fix something else... Good idea to back off for the rest of the day. You can get adaptors that go on your floorjack that turn it into a tranny jack. I've seen them for $30-40. Maybe check that out to save some $ ?? Good luck ! B
  2. Start by checking all wiring connections, including the battery ground. I doubt thats the issue, but it's free and easy to do. It'd be silly to replace the starter and have the same problem. That said, I'd guess your starter or selenoid is the issue. B
  3. Well, it would help to try to isolate where the sound is coming from/which device it is. Sounds to me like you have a wiring short, and what you smell is the insulation burning... Funny that it hasn't blown a fuse, but that pretty much means that it is not something that is fuse protected. You are really going to have to try to find it. Try following your nose first, and worst case is that you hook up the battery and look for smoke... Got a fire extinguisher ? Good Luck ! B
  4. Vidro, I don't know whether to laugh or cry... Damn Rami, now I understand why you got stuck; you have a 2 door !! *snicker* Glad you got her back in one piece !! I guess a winch is going to be the next item for the Pathy ? Cool Yota too, that thing is so ugly I like it ! B
  5. That can only describe a bad industrial accident or someone putting their tranny in solo, minus a tranny jack... I vote for the tranny install ! Sounds like you are being creative, so please take picts. This stuff is invaluable for ideas and laughs... Best of luck and be safe ! B
  6. Happy Birthday Illegal !! Have fun, but don't get caught... B
  7. DOH !!! Rami, sounds like you need a winch or serious come-along with some tire chocks to get back up and out... Try putting on tire chains ? I'm sure you'll get it figured out, but those are cheap/easy suggestions that could help... Good luck Bud, and take plenty of picts !! B
  8. What's that ?? Is it factory or aftermarket ? Yes, I agree... check wires/connectors and maybe try sealing connectors with RTV (silicone) after that, if it faults out constantly, either have it cleaned/rebuilt/replaced or try having a system to flush it out when on the trail. mws, I have not heard of a piss can before, but I suspect it is merely a container you pressurize by pumping up with a spiggot or gun at the end of a hose... You know what I mean... B
  9. Thanks for the info !! My speedo has been whacking out intermittently for a few months (getting worse) and just the other day the gas gauge failed (but it came back to life today). I'm hoping when I get into it, it's just something loose, but from your discription, it is not... No pathy's in the wreckers around here... We'll see that happens. B
  10. I somewhat agree with both of them... If you can sand it VERY lightly and ALL discoloration is PURELY surface level and removable and you have the tools (indicators/etc) and the knowledge to check the flywheel properly then yes, you can reuse it. Ok, that said, yours looks like crap !! Thats more than a little hot, and I see evidence of galling, all of this is not good for the metal and indicates a strong possibility of warpage. I got a quote for turning my flywheel for $50. A remanufactured (read turned) with a new ring gear was $60 with a core charge. No brainer, in went the reman flywheel. They may not want to accept yours as a core; if this happens, clean it up well and try the next store. I would not reuse yours without very careful inspection/having it turned. As sw says, why mess around. I think we all want our clutches to work as well and last as long as possible... B

    Thanks!

Right on Luke !! Thats what we like to hear !! Congrats and good job... What did it cost you and how much did the stealership want ? Did you replace all 6 or did you isolate the malfunctioning ones ? If so, how did you do it ? I remembering following the thread, but I missed the end. I believe you can just pull plug wires when it's running... when you get to the wires that don't effect the running of the motor, thats the coil pack thats bad... Of course, you can get a nice shock if you aren't careful, but it's just annoying, not damaging. B
  12. NO, NO and NO !! Vasoline is petroleum based; don't put it in your radiator/engine block !! Use a water based 'personal lubricant', it's much better !! It's also good for a few jokes when you pull it out of your tool box... B

    It gets worse

I agree with V6... I've seen some NASTY photos of State side rust, but that doesn't seem to make sense down under !! Again, I'd see what it would take to weld !! Good luck, keep us posted. B
  14. Yeesh, what a maroon !! I don't care what kind of paint, tv or game console is built into the friggin dash. They are pretty useless when you are DRIVING the damn thing !! 200k on the 2.4liter 4 cyl and dogomatic tranny ? NO THANK YOU !!! I doubt it's worth the $6000 he wants... B
  15. Dude... F the paint !! Get the front wheels pointed the same direction !!! Then test out the skid plate. Then have me make the rest of the set for you (You have to pay some for them, but that part of the truck isn't bent so the fit will be FAR better!!). Point is, there is plenty else to do other than spend $ on paint that will get scratched if you use the truck... If someone gives you crap about an old looking truck, back into them !! Undercoating it, Rhinocoating it, whatever is the BEST suggestion I have heard... I saw Honda Hurricane like that and it was GREAT !!! B

    Help no BRAKES!

I bench bleed in the vehicle using the 'port finger pluugging' method and never really had issues... Maybe luck, maybe good fingers. Ya rsa... you have air in the MC, or brake lines *bleed farthest first to closest last*, or the MC is garbage, or you have a blown line or a line that is bubbling (like the bubble gum) when you step on the brake... It sounds like you know how to check for these things. Check the lines first, then work backwards. Good luck and let us know whats up. B
  17. Damn, I'm glad you explained !! I wasn't sure if you were changing a flat or revovering the Pathy from the privacy of your own driveway !! I play vehicular roulette in the driveway all the time, but not quite the same though. The Pathy I'll drive over anythng, but the VW is so low, I can't even get a jack under it !! :o B
  18. I 100% agree, other than the last part. I always tell them just to snug the lugs, and they always argue that they cant. I say "write it on the work order or I walk". PERIOD !! Don't give me this you can't crap ! Do what I ask or get out of my way when I head for the door or your A$$ is going down and getting trampled (with an extra boot to the head or two!!) !! When I say "sorry, I don't trust you idiots" just say ok, take my $ and humor me... I'll agree with most of mws's list but will add All clutch components (I don't want to take it apart again until the friction disk is shot) and anything that threads into a cast aluminum part with a hex bolt... Thats the easiest way to strip crappy metal. I know to watch for it, and still do it sometimes; 8 lbs means it will back out. 12 lbs is right. 15-18 lbs is ripping out the threads... Seen it too many times !! B
  19. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it !!" I follow this as much as possible and find it rarely steers me wrong ! Well, ok, the project VW I fix when I can regardless, and the Pathy I break, then wonder how I'm going to fix it... But you know what I mean !! B
  20. DOH !! Gotta love Grandma... Polish eagle; don't we call them vultures in the US ?? A German, an Italian and a Pole are planning to cross the desert. The German says "I'll bring a block of ice, it will help us stay cool and when it melts, we can drink the water." The Italian says "I'll bring a bag of oranges, the juice will help quench our thirst and we can eat the pulp." The Pole says "I'll bring a car door, when it gets hot, I'll roll down the window." B
  21. Seems like a set of cheap trailer lights mounted on the back of the carrier would be cheap insurance... B
  22. Yeah, I could tell that weren't no ordinary XR400... Thats why I want it !! Tell him he has an admirer, and to keep the garage locked !! B
  23. Hey, at least you landed on your wheels, and not on the bars !! I see that as a perfect loop ramp... Probably shoulda chopped the throttle on the up and over, eh ?? Gotta love those "trying to keep momentum" moments !! :cool2: B
  24. *snort* Leave it to a Polack (Polock) to miss spell that !! *snicker* How do you get a one armed Pole out of a tree ?? Wave !! Whats the most dangerous job in Poland ? Riding shotgun on the garbage truck Why doesn't the Polish Navy have submarines ? Screen doors kept leaking Why does the new Polish Navy have glass hulled ships ? So they can see the old Polish Navy... Here is the Polish Navy's last attempt at a submarine... B Get over it MZ, he asked for some...
