There are two differen ticks and taps at start up. The extremely long one is the manifold tick, and the short quick clack clack is the lifters. Yes, just about everyone has the lifter tick at start up, and it does NOT hurt a thing. It's just annoying and that's all there is to it. If you have a dead lifter it can cause little problems down the road. But people also have the manifold tick as well. Did you ever tighten down the manifold studs to make 100% sure that's not the problem?

I run 10w40 in mine now. I actually had 5w30 in it, and immediately I had that lifter tick on the freeway. A few weeks ago I changed my oil and put in 10w40 and my tick went away. Still the tap at start up though.

It's a 60,000 mile interval for the timing belt. There is no way the stock belt has lasted this long without skipping teeth or coming apart completely. When it does, it will destroy your engine.

Lol I had that issue once a while back, had the windows down and slung some mud right into my truck and all over my dashboard and n the heater controls and stuff. Good times...

Quick Question. More curious than anything

Depends on the maintenance. How often the timing belt was replaced, frequent tune ups, etc. I don't believe anyone has swapped a VG35 into a WD, and I don't think there would be enough room. I don't believe anyone has turbo'd a Pathfinder before either, if you did you would have to custom make some crazy ass fittings for a turbo to even fit anywhere in the engine compartment. -
The automatic shift lever. On the black piece, if you take it off the lever and look at the backside, there's a little cut our square. Take a flat head and pry it out, and behind it is a little 1" deep by 1/2" wide metal box inside. Could hide some little illegal things in there... I think this is only good for the automatics without the E/AT switch...

I have one of my hats hooked over the 4x4 shifter so it covers up the quarters in the tray behind it. That's where I keep two knives as well, in the crevice the shifted boot makes so my hat covers those as well.

I've never heard a hissing before. I would go out and check when it's running, but my lack of muffer really makes it difficult to notice little finite noises...
-
I find it weird that people have coins in their ash trays on these things. The automatic WD21s have a coin colder right behind the 4x4 shifter and in front of the transmission shifter there's another spot for coins...

Help Needed! Engine and mechanics
Kingman replied to Nytrosfinder's topic in 86.5-89 WD21 Pathfinders
NO. These are OBDI ECUs. They are self checking units!!! There is a reason why I gave you that link. Did you follow the instructions??? Only an OBDII ECU needs a scanner. And to flash an ECU is to reprogram it with new information or simly reset it. -
any...anything better than haynes repair manual ?
Kingman replied to Pinip's topic in 90-95 WD21 Pathfinders
I have a Clymer service manual for the Datsun and Nissan pickups and Pathfinder. It covers the L, Z, VG, and some other engine in the Hardbodies and Pathfinder. Has complete information about every part of each vehicle, tear down and rebuild guides, etc. -
Clacking is a good descriptive word for it. I can't think of anything that comes closer... I'm fortunate enough to still have the stock manifolds and studs, that aren't leaking or broken. *knock on wood* I do have the lifter tick at startup, on almost all lifters, for a few seconds then cuts off completely, no fading out. Except for one, which clacks for a second or two longer. This is also the lifter that ticks on the freeway when I'm low on oil

I find "tough" and "independent torsion bar front suspension" to be hilarious. What a crock... Bad ass little truck!

Power switch for the transmission. Tells the transmission to hold gears longer and shifts at different points for optimum power. Probably a few other little things within the tranny but yeah that's the basic idea.

Isn't there a fuse for it in the fuse panel?
-
That's amazing. If only they put a slightly towned down version of that engine in the Hardbody and Pathfinders...

That's not quite what I was getting at. I meant it as an engine being allowed to breathe easier is a happier one. More restricted, and it's less happy. I like the analogy of blowing through straws. Small one and it's extremely hard to blow through (less than 1.5"), and a huge one it's like nothing and is way too much (more than 2.5"). A medium sized one, you can blow through it easy but the air has some force to it as well (2.25"-2.5") -
When something goes bad, to stay bad and not play games with me. Maybe it's too old to remember if it's broken or not... But it is of legal drinking age. I wonder if it would run off Jack... Come to think of it, I never have checked my EGR valve, but all the vacuum lines are a-ok. I really don't think it's O2 sensor related either, and that it's a separate problem all together. But stranger things have happened. The revving up for a second, literally, has to do with the AB valve I think and the vacuum it causes. I took it off and when it started it wouldn't ren at all and there was a second or two gap between the engine starting and consistantly running. After I put the valve back on it started revving up like it does. I like it much better that way, instills a little more confidence.

Didn't drive it at all yestertday, but today it ran 100% WTF... I absolutely hate intermittent sh!t. Never had a vehicle that did this so much...
-
Hmmmm that part makes sense. But I was under the impression that as far as runability goes, it either doesn't affect it or it makes it run like total ass, sputtering under load, dying out, etc. I'll find a way to make a hundred bucks and buy a direct fit sensor, but it won't be for a while. I don't even see why a universal one won't work. The wiring is the same...

That's fskcin sexy...

BUY IT!!!!!! Obviously, they're worth quite a bit

Thanks for the input. The truck runs perfectly fine off idle when it's cold. It's just at idle when it runs funny. It's not a loopy or loping idle, or sputtering, just not as silky smooth as usual. The slightest bit of throttle and it clears right up. It also should rev up to about 1500-2000 RPM when it first starts for a second and then settle, well lately is has only been revving up to about 1200, if that. When it's cold. When it's warm, again, it runs fine.

Haha I have the same issue with my touch as well. Can be pretty frustrating sometimes...
