power felt fine when i drove it round the block yeah, it didnt stop after the first few clangs, so im guessing its not timing....especially as i was really careful and triple checked everything before i tightened everything, and turned the engine over manually to check for binding(there was none) yeah, ill do as you suggest and try without accessory belts etc. i need to catch a break here...

i dont have manifold covers cos i have headers on. yeah, it does sound like something is loose, but i have no idea what. hopefully more people will comment on the video so i have ideas of what to look at

well, the video sounded like what mine sounds like. a metallic clacking. ill have to check the belt tensioner tomorrow. make sure its tight etc. or just try it without the belt and see if it makes a noise. i may check the timing too JIC - to put my mind at ease though....if valves were hitting pistons it would happen at all times right? not just when i revved the engine? i will post a video as soon as i get home...damn work computers wont let me do photobucket.

from his PM it was a problem with the AC belt. probably too tight and broke, after which the noise stopped.

suspension lifts dont require any modifications. body lifts do i believe.

did your timing slip or was it something else adamzan?

ok, started her up, without the fan attached so i could do the timing light better. sounded fine, lifter tick is still there, but whatever. had a mishap, it seemed i didnt clamp down a coolant hose when i put the engine back together, so she started to leak coolant. Quickly clamped it down and all was fine. put the fan on and radiator shroud and took her for a test drive around the neighborhood. sounds fine at idle and lower revs, but when i put more load on the engine there is a loud sound, like something clacking. cant figure it out, next door neighbor said it sounded like something to do with the belts. its definitely from the front of the engine. any ideas? would the timing belt make sounds like that? i would think it would do it even at low revs though right? ill post a video tomorrow, i ran out of battery tonight.

ok, k9sar. so now im a bit nervous. my timing mark is just after the first mark on the pulley. #1 piston was at the top when i had the heads off, and i havent moved the crankshaft since. teeth all counted fine on the belt.

cool, almost done!!! ok, if i line up marks on the distributor it makes it point here: the FSM has a picture that has it pointing here: the first one also lines up with my #1 spark plug which is correct?

well the rubber thing just came out when i grabbed it. it didnt seem to be attached to anything so cross fingers everything works when i start her up. almost done now, however, what gaskets do I use for the headers? will the ones in the engine gasket kit fit? or are they too small. checker doesnt have any they can match my old ones with.

heres another shot of it: i would say try a dealer and see if they can source it from japan. probably expensive, but i would think the most likely way youll get one.

best shot i can do for now. i dont think id be able to get a shot of the rubber thing anyways cos its pretty deep in there and the shadows prevent the camera from capturing that far down. but its in one of the holes which is marked.

almost forgot to ask this. when i was cleaning up the block, i noticed there was a rubber strip down one of the coolant eyelets, kinda sticking out into where the coolant flows. its just kinda there, it doesnt move when i turn the engine over or anything. what is made of rubber that is used in the block that this could be? no pictures cos im at work.

so i got the drivers side head on and all torqued down nicely yesterday, went back on without a hitch but then I had to stop because of the afore mentioned problemo. However, the valve keeper got to my door today so am all set to put her back together tomorrow (and friday if need be) YAY! was wondering though: as the timing belt is not wide enough to cover all of the sprockets should it be positioned in a certain way? as in center or pushed back or flush with the front of the sprockets? my old one was pushed back and something was rubbing on it slightly.

well no Nissan dealerships in town have them, and cant get them till Friday at the soonest. so i ordered from Parts Dinosaur instead and he will get em to me tomorrow. guess i can still put the drivers side head on today....sigh.

thats almost like mine! i didnt realize it was Nissan Equipment. only difference is the bottom of mine isnt round, its flat and holes are drilled (assuming to take a winch) idk where you would find replacements, apart from a very lucky find at a junkyard

Started lapping today. Had to run to the auto shop to get some compound so started a bit late. It is just as easy as you guys said and I was careful not to get any on the shafts. Was doing great until halfway through the passenger side head my valve spring compressor slipped and shot the valve retainer clip god knows where!?!?!? So damn frustrating. Now i have to order one from Parts Dinosaur, only 99 cents, but shipping is $7.50 arg!
