Yep you can, another issue is the amount of resistance that extra oil creates in the bottom of the engine can actually bend parts.
Best thing to do when you do an oil change; put in the 3 3/8q, then let it sit for about 10 minutes, pull the dipstick and read the level on there, if it isn't reading full then add a little more. FYI, the bottom tip of the dipstick is equal to one full quart (+/-), so if there is just a little drip on the bottom, you are a quart low, if the stick has oil halfway up the hash marked area, then you are half a quart low, etc.
