I wrote this letter to the owner of gaspig because I was so disgusted with his ignorance. Here'e the page that sparked me to write:

Gas pig dot com

I wrote this letter prior to understanding you've since destroyed your truck, but your readers might find the information useful.

I live in Canada and drive a 1995 Nissan pathfinder. The gas mileage your truck gets is incredibly poor. Might I suggest you get your pathfinder tuned up. There are many different ways to increase your mileage with these vehicles which include:

-Cleaning the Mass Airflow Sensor and Carbon Canister

-Ensure your tires are inflated to the correct levels (I use about 35-40psi on 31"x10.5"x15" tires)

-Check to make sure your Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve is functioning properly

-Check the condition of your sparkplugs for wear

-Check to make sure your Exhaust Gas Re-circulation Valve is working properly

-Replace dirty air filters

-Make sure your vehicle is proper aligned

-Check your slide pins on the brake calipers to make sure your aren't dragging your pads on the rotors when you are not braking.

-Check for broken Exhaust Manifold Studs. These trucks have a history of this problem. Air leaking into the exhaust system will be picked up by the Oxygen Sensor located between the catalytic converters and cause the computer system to enrich the air/fuel mixture to compensate for the increased amount of air, thus causing poor mileage.

This is just a short list of proper maintenance required for all vehicles, not just trucks. This, of course, is only a fraction of the cause of poor fuel economy. Driving habits such as fast starts, long periods of idling, excessive speed and short trips (<5 min. drives) will also increase fuel consumption.

I drive my vehicle very sensibly around town and out on the freeways and I regularly use about 14 liters per 100km during city driving. My mileage increases to 11-13L/100km when I stay around 85km/h. For your sake, that translates to about 16mpg city and 20mpg freeway @ 50mph. This is all achieved using the lowest grade fuel available (87octane).

I found that learning a little bit about your own vehicle and keeping it properly tuned to be more helpful than putting a f**king "GASPIG" sticker on your truck and bitching about how much fuel it consumes, rather than performing a little maintenance.

What's even more ignorant on your part is the fact that you decided to pollute your backyard by destroying your truck using explosives when you could have recycled your vehicle to a junkyard or parts recycler.

So before you quickly finger SUV drivers for "wasting" all the gasoline and polluting your country, you should be talking to the owners of cars which idle for long periods of time, belch black and blue smoke or are otherwise out of tune. You should also look to educate yourself and other vehicle owners on how they can achieve better fuel economy through knowledge. I feel your efforts would be better spent there than continuing to harp on SUV owners, and encourage them to dispose of their vehicles in a wasteful manner for your own publicity i.e. "DUMP IT FROM A BRIDGE" –I bet that does wonders for water quality.

Asshat.

I never noticed the animosity (sp?) towards SUV's on the web until today. Most of them are kinda funny like the H2 haters, but that guy needed to be spoken to. He contradicts himself on so many levels

Well, I WILL give the guy a point or two for writing back and conceding that you have valid points AND not being a jerk about it, BUT I subtract several dozen points because he proved himself to be a misrepresenting sensationalist. You should ask him to post your letter and his reply as is on his site. Won't happen. I think this guy is just trying to cash in on this somehow... Defifitely an A$$ in my book.

what's the point of that? if he wants better gas milage he should get a toyota prius or something. the thing that bugs me is that when people buy cars that they know is going to burn alot of gas, the complain after. he should give me his path so i can use his drive train.

speaking of gas mileage my nissan titan, is getting better on gas mileage, i got 9mpg last tank. i love that thing...

oh yeah, what moron would drive around with "GASPIG" written all over his truck? what a POS. he's giving away stickers huh? i'll use them to wipe my butt. so i'll save some trees and not waste TP.
