Steering Play Question

Well... I have around a 1 inch steering play from side to side on my steering wheel is that normal?

Yes and no. All of my steering parts, (CL, TRE's, BJ's) are brand new and I still have some play. Maybe not an inch, but still there is play.

How does it handle on the road?

I've replaced the entire steering system with exception of the ball joints and the steering box. I still have play and I'm certain it is in the steering box. That will be dealt with but after larger priorities...

If you shake it more than twice, you're playing with it! :lmao:

Anyway...., yeah even with all new parts I've had some play at the wheel. I think the biggest factor is the ball joint ends being used on the center-link and tie rods, putting 2 multi-directional pivot points next to each other it allows some extra movement, even in fresh out of the box parts. That is why the main steering upgrade is a ridged centerlink.

Be careful when you do. 1/8 turns at a time max (probably clockwise), it's easy to crush the worm gear and that won't help...

NO NO NO! that is a misconception, leave that screw alone. I have dissabled these boxes and read the nissan rebuild manual.

It is measured when the box is open and then set to the same measurment when the after the box is sealed You need to know what you are doing and what to measure. then you can open it up and crorrectly aujst it (so download the FSM)

the screw and nut on top of the box moves the whole shaft up and down. It is a straight tooth pinion and the ajuster centers it on the 'piston gear' which is also straight toothed. So turning this is not the way to tighten the steering and if over tightend the clip on the top of the saft breaks and the depris can eventually cause catistrophic steering failure.(using a pickle fork to remove you pitman will have the same effect)

If there is paly in the box it is most likely because the bearings which circulate between the teeth of the worm gear and Piston gear are worn from 20 years of use. (This is called recirculating ball steering).

Redhead steering gear is the only remaufacuter in the US that replaces ALL these balls with every re-build

Nissan spec for steering wheel play is 1.38" or less measured from the outer radius of the wheel. With fresh TRE's, BJ's a Hooha CL and a good idler play can be brought down to less than 1/2" providing you have a good box.

scratchheadyellow.gif IIRC there is an adjustment for the box, but it requires a special spanner tool.

Thats how you open it to see what your doing, and then set the bearing prealod. All this should be done Off the vehicle.

Ok, my mistake. Calm down!!

I did not investigate the procedure, just went by what I have done with previous vehicles, which was correct for them. Hey, it's the same adjustment nut and slotted thread.

it handles good. I was just wondering why did it have that kind of play. Because my 79 civic doesnt have THAT MUCH of play. :itsallgood:

In general Worm gear and reciulating ball-worm gear systems are know for having more play than Rack and pinion systems.

And your civic is rack and pinion.

lol, I have about 3-4"s of play... I blame my super worn out centre link and big heavy tires for wearing everything out :(

I found a good CL in the junk yard last weekend :) think I'm going to pull that and send it off to be Hooha'ed

any contact info for Redhead?

I might look into pulling this steering box from the JY too and ship it out O.O

Because a 79 Civic weighs 25 lbs, like that puts stress on a steering system.:laugh:

Their trade mark is painting the topcap red

before assembling the Remanufacutred box

I'd prefer them vs and other rebuild any day.

Because they go above an beyond with the

parts and inspection. They even modify some

boxes to perfrom better (ford boxes are up-

graded to needle bearings inplace of insufficent

ball bearings.

Depends on your box year and its needs. Expect 200~300 for most normal nissan boxes.

A most remans cost more and they do less making readhead the best choice if you want Like-new-quality from a reaman.

I think their stock is limited to domestics.

Shoot them and email or call them.

then send up a $15 JY box and hopefully you can pick it up when your up here.
