Auto Transmission Heat

Hi guys

Ive recently brought a 92 Terrano 2.7 TD auto. The guy i brought it off said he spent NZ$2700 rebuilting the trans which would be bot 8000Kms ago. I find after driving it with no load in it or tow anything on just the road not off road, ie doing nothing hard work there is a lot a heat comming into the truck from the transmission, and i mean alot its bloody hot.

My question is, this surely anit normal is it? n secondly whats causing it, and what should i do about it?

Cheers guys

ARMZ

I don't have an AT, but I'll start with the bad news... As you know, heat is bad. These nissan trannys have some issues and rebuilding them doesn't always take.

Do you have an aftermarket tranny cooler? This is the first thing that needs to be installed, like tomorrow!! The stock radiator cooler is prone to clogging and frying trannys. Seriously, check the through flow if you can, just grabbing the lines can tell you temperature wise. If not, don't drive it, bypass the stock unit and install a seperate tranny cooler. It is about 20-30 times cheaper than a rebuild, not to mention a new one! I'd bet this is the problem.

Other, more knowledgable people will chime in and I'm sure they will agree...

Precise1 has got you covered. I've heard of people rebuilding trannys in these thing 2-3 times in a row (like, within 2K miles of each other) and not knowing why they keep dying. The external cooler, while bypassing the stock cooler in the rad, helps keep the fluid flowing, and cool.

Check your tranny fluid, I'm willing to bet it's brown and burnt. If so, as previously mentioned, get those lines off that rad, and connected to a separate LARGE cooler (20,000lb or so, bigger is better) and then get the tranny fluid flushed and filled. Do not let a shop run any cleaners or detergents through the tranny. Have them flush only with new tranny fluid, using about 12-14L, and ensure that it's filled to the right level when they're done.

Also (check the rubber boot that the transfer case (2wd-4wd stick))

Ripped mine during Body Lift and WOW does it come in hot (and I have a cooler)

more heat from engine, radiator and tranny pushed by fan blasting in, roll the windows down and it pulls in even more hot air.

I need to order the boot but haven't found the damn part # yet.

Hope it is something that easy for you also!-)

And Welcome to the forum.

It also degrades and cracks over time, IIRC my father had to replace it on my 93.
