Wrong Master Cylinder?

I have a 91 nissan pathy XE and I replaced the master cylinder a while back with one I purchased from a junk yard. Now my brake pedal can be pressed all the way to the floor with not much resistance. I think the one I bought is off an older model, say maybe '90 or earlier. Is this master cylinder the wrong one for my year and if so what is different about it? Thanks

Make sure you didnt pull one off for rear disc brakes and you dont have them. It wont work correctly. Like MZ said, did you bleed everything correctly and get the air out? Yeah, I wouldnt trust a J/Y master cylinder, unless you rebuilt it.

I bench bled it and ran at least 1.5 bottles of brake fluid through the system before the final bleed. If it was bad wouldn't leak (between the vacuum boost and the cylinder flange itself)? At least this is what happened with the old one before I replaced it. Maybe it has something to with rear disc brake like 5523Pathfinder said. Anyone know when they started using rear disc on their models. Thanks

my 89 had them from the factory too. just xe has the drums on the early models.

 

an MC from a 4 disc system wouldn't do that. it just wouldn't distribute the power like it's supposed to. the pedal should still be stiff. the MC may leak into the booster. you may not be able to see it.

The MC had all ready been pulled by someone who worked there. It was in the back layin on a shelf. I'm pretty sure he said it was from a '90. I don't know what kinda model the mc came from. Mine is drum in back though. Thanks

when replacing the MC, do I have to bleed the LSV and the ABS hydraulic actuator? If so you guys have any tips/tricks for this procedure? I have no experience with repairing ABS stuff :confused:

There is a certain procedure for bleeding the system with ABS. IIRC you have to have the ingition on (or some other odd thing) when you bleed the valve on the frame rail.
