IpathyXe
If you have done an alternator swap I'd like to know how difficult it is and wether I should just take it in to the shop to get it done. I preferibly would like to do it myself ( good thing to know) plus i have the Haynes book soo.. just give me some feed back.. you guys rock! govols74n
Its not hard, Just a couple of bolts, I think I had to remove my skid plate and get it from the bottom....when I put the new 1 on i used a small bar to pry the alternator until the belt got tight then tightened the bolts. Adam
this is how i figure whether a repair is worth me doing... i figure how much i make an hour, versus shop rate, and if i spend more time but less money at my own rate than taking it to a shop, i do it myself... if its something i know would take way longer than a shop and spend more of my time than its worth to have a shop do, then i don't do it, but its very rare that i don't do the work myself... 94extreme
I paid $20.00 to have mine put in. Zack ^^ what kind of fly-by-night outfit was that. no way you could find a reputable shop to do it for less then $200 including the alt.

Good point... Here's another one to consider... What's the vehicle worth? If you're talking $100 in parts, and $500 labour, the reality is that the truck may not be worth that.....or not much more. I do almost everything myself, because I can't justify paying shop prices for much, if anything. I had my clutch done at a local dealer, because I didn't have time to tackle it when I had a part failure, and the truck was barely driveable. Other than that, she doesn't see mechanics. So far, 300,000kms, and it's still running....I'm sure I've saved thousands by doing things myself over the years.

mws
Ditto. And for the last 25 years, I have allowed myself to spend 1/2 of what I saved on TOOLS! And I like tools.... so that gives me lots of incentive to try and do it myself every time! I'm to the point I think the contents of my garage are worth at least 3x of the house contents (and that is a conservative estimate). And tools do not depreciate anything like house contents! I am now equipped (and skilled) enough to do just about everything. It's so nice to to get it done RIGHT the first time, and never being number 18 on the priority list! madhatter_xe
With the alternator located where it is, you might as well get used to changing it.

Excuse me, it was not a "fly-by-night" shop! I gave the part to the shop, and they swapped it out for me. The shop that I use does high quality work at all times, and I am a regular cust, is there something "fly-by-night" in treating customers right?
