BLouisGod
its got a small ass tire on there and its a PITA to open the hatch. anyone just removed theirs? It has got to look a lot cleaner  :::pics::: Edited November 9, 2006 by BLouisGod
KevinKernaghan
IMHO Pathfinders look better with the carrier, the back of the car (stock) is completely flat and doesn't have much character without it. I do agree about some of the hassles, though...I guess it's to each his own. At least it opens in the right direction, unlike the Isuzu Rodeo carrier. Maybe if the rear got a custom bumper, and the tire went up on a roof rack, now THAT would look pretty alright.
mws
It's simple to remove - just unbolt it. Some like the look without it, some prefer the functionality with it. Your choice, do what floats YOUR boat.
govols74n
Exactly. where will you put your spare??? Its much easier than dragging it off of the roof, and takes up too much room inside IMHO. (get a bigger spare) and oil the hinges and latches....i soak mine in PB's lubricant....works like brand new.
Adam
mine works great, and i like the way it looks, i've seen other WD21's on the road without the carrier, and they just look so wrong, and plain.
John Boy
I was going to take it off right up to the minute some idiot banged into it me as I was sitting at a red light. It makes for a great rubber bumper!
Hud
Mine did'nt come with one but I was seriously considering putting one on... But its too much of a production for the support for the upper hinge... Some may say it's plain or it looks wrong... but it beats making those 18 point turns on a tight trail... BLouisGod
I may take it off this weekend to see what it looks like. Maybe ill put the spare in the back? All i know is i need a new spare wheel cover for it.
~Ben~
I love the spare on my back.. to me its just always made the most sense for the spare to be on the back of an SUV. You don't lose any ground clearance (when you put it underneath), you don't lose cargo room (when you put it inside), and its a hell of a lot easier to get off than when you put it on top. Although I do still like the idea of putting a tire on top. Just having to swing it open isn't much of a problem I don't think... I had to grease mine up so it opened easier, but now it swings easily so its no big deal at all.
SkinnyPedal
I love mine: its got a small ass tire on there you can always put a full-sizer on there, but like mws says, you gotta do what floats YOUR boat!
tx_flatlander
1. Get a full sized spare tire/rim combo 2. If pulling one additional lever is too much of a workout to open your hatch then yes, maybe its not for you But nevermind all the aforementioned benefits. saftey, ergnomics, flexability, mounting points, etc
unccpathfinder
add a full size spare...after seeing how much it saved...or lack there of for wheelmans pathy i wouldnt recomend removing it... he got rear ended and it barely dented up the rear hatch and the bumper...and never broke the back glass or anything like that still opened and closed...but it was totaled where he was pushed into the pathy in front of him (guy was in a f 150 or 250 and doing about 45)...if no1 would have been in front of him it would have saved it...lemmie see if i can find pix... u can kidna see the back here... and the front yes it would have been fixable but the insur totaled it and he made more $ selling parts... but i think it would have been a lot lot worse without the carrier Edited November 10, 2006 by unccpathfinder
John Boy
Hey I have that foglight on my truck......Maybe I should stick another spare tire on the front bumper. Not to point blame but those blackout tailights may not be the best thing in the world. Edited November 10, 2006 by John Boy
sammyb33
eh a lot of people pointed that out at that time too... -sam
ILoveMyPatty
Well, if you take the spare tire carrier off, and put the tire inside... if you get a flat when you're mudding then you gotta put a muddy tire inside the pathy...
RedPath88
Throw it up on top for the trip home (if you can)
BLouisGod
i took some white lithium grease to the joints and it pops off much easier now. I think ill leave it on and just get a new cover for it - I have CVs to replace and a factory exhaust to cut off this weekend sssh
