  1. Yeah, that's about the drawback for normal users. If you install the suite, it has it's own firewall/proactive defense. It has 'levels' of protection, if you chose 'lockdown', it will not let anything access the net. Has the learning mode , basic, custom and other modes. Leave it at the most noob level. Try just the Antivirus Version alone instead of the suite. Or if installing the suite, just choose the antivirus. Personally I stick with the basic windows firewall and basic router. The only software firewall I ever loved was "sygate professional', damn, I loved it. And what happened, &^%*ing Symantec norton bought the company out and they tell all users to upgrade to Norton, bastards. I bought a motherboard that has a built in hardware firewall that filters the ethernet port, which works cool as I can login into it and change all kinds of settings. Even then, I usually leave it off. Try eset standalone scanner. You can also try out kaspersy and bitdefender. They all have standalone scanner and the suites. If you want Mcafee enterprise antispyware/antivirus.. pm me.
  2. Sounds like a good price for all that. I was looking under 'automotive services' at craigslist, thinking you can find a mechanic with fairly decent price. Few told me $350-375, one guy told me about 250 but he get back to me. He did, then told me $450. And they all sound shady over the phone. Keep in mind this was quotes for just pump/belt, I told them I had parts already. Just wanted to see what are prices are out there. I know nothing of their work or anything. Might just fskc my ride up and/or try to hit me up for a few extra hundred, lol.
  3. Windows defender is ok. It is free (if you have a genuine copy of windows), and in fact it is bundled along with Windows Vista CDs. However same problem in my opinion, it only scans for spyware, etc, not viruses. So you would in fact still need TWO producs running, two different engines. My opinion is to have something using low resources, well coded, and a super scan engine with a reputable source. That is why I vouch for Eset, Mcafee.. They are companies built solely for fighting viruses, and have teams monitoring this kind of activity, including newer variants which go undetected such as rootkits and have better scanning options such as heuristics. Norton is very good in this department, however what kills them is their slow product. The corporate version is small and yet powerful. The goal here is to have one program that is 1. Reputable 2. Small footprint/not a resource hogger and 3. One engine that scans for everything. Linux and Macs are naturally great in repelling these nuisances. There are in fact some antivirus scanners for them, macs already have Norton/mcafee scanners. Every major brand already has a linux antivirus version available. Honestly I think they are overrated. I believe the more and more linux comes into mainstream and more popular, script kiddies will baddies that can infect in some way, just like the recent Linux worm that compromised more than 3,500 machines. One of the points on Linux is that is free and open source. Buying protection is defeating the point. There are few free protection items made readily available to download for it.
  4. As a professional Tech with 15+ yrs experience, listen to my advice. 1. Get ESET, either the smart security suite or just the stand alone nod32 antivirus. No, you can't get a copy from friends, you need to pay per year for a license that authenticates on their server. There are methods to defeat this, but I won't advocate them, just use google. One of the great things I love about eset, it's the small footprint on system resources and the powerful scanning engine. It will scan for spyware, malware, viruses, adware, etc. Excellent. 2. Or Mcafee Antivirus. BUT try to get the 'enterprise' edition. Leaves a much smaller footprint on the pc than the huge noob retail one. If you get the enterprise, get the antispyware enterprise plugin. 3. Kaspersky is also great, in fact using it on this laptop for now. Same deal, you need a license that authenticates on it's server. You might just find one on google. I'm using the suite of Kaspersky and I find the firewall to overprotective at times. You can choose default, learning mode or ask as you go. I disable the firewall aspect of it and just use the antivirus engine. Also scans for all crap like eset. Others that are good multi scanners is TrendMicro and BitDefender. Also you can do free online scans, just google "free online scan", just about every brand will give you free online scan, just make sure they allow 'removal'. TrendOnlinescan is the best. DO NOT go buy Norton 360 or Norton security etc..UNLESS you have massive amounts of memory 2gb minimum at least. Those of you that installed Norton will know what I'm talking about. Norton sucks up a HUGE amount of system resources dragging your pc nearly to a halt, not great for productivity. People, you must realize, while virus exists, they are not really the threat anymore. The real threats now are spyware, malware, adware, trojans and all those other grayware types. Most antivirus do not scan for this. This pisses me off, when I see products that sell for 40$ that scans for viruses, then you have to pay another 40$ for a antispyware, then a 20-30 for a antitrojan, etc. If you have multitude of products simultaneously scanning, you will feel a drag in your system, taking the fun out of computing. It would make more logical sense to have ONE engine scanning for everything and pay one price. Total effectiveness. Everything on the Net has servers everywhere with antivirus implemented. Example, next time you get that attachment from yahoo or hotmail, you'll see 'attachment scanned by mcafee or norton'. Viruses are real, but not the real threat. Majority of all my clients are 85% spyware infestations. Use common sense, if you browsing the web and you come across 'CLICK HERE TO VIEW BRITANNY SPEARS PUS*Y" and it asks you to install something free in order to view her skanky ass, don't do it. Any antivirus is better than no antivirus. However choosing the right one makes the difference. By the way, NOTHING is guaranteed to 100% keep you clean, read the fine print on all antivirus products. For antispyware extra, I only recommend 3 products, SpywareDoctor, Spysweeper and all small unknown one called SuperAntiSpyware. I swear by that last one in tough cases. Small simple and efficient, even has built in repairs such as repairing windows policies, restrictions, etc, caused by malicious spywares. I'd say spyware doctor first, superantispyware then spysweeper. I believe PC Tools (makers of spywaredoctor) has now made a All in one. Scans for viruses, spywares, etc etc in one engine. I will install that on another computer to try it out sometime. If you have nothing right now, PM me.
  5. This was going to be a near future next job for my pathy, but now I'm confused. I thought 300zx studs is the way, but reading this thread some people actually use 'bolts'? From homedepot or auto parts store? What is the major difference from using either or? Studs or bolts, which is better recommended? Maybe 88path has photo of the bolts/studs to see difference..you know you the man with that digicam
  6. And just for fun a parody: I really think Tommy boy is happy he's part of something and he's just overjoyous, which explains the energy laugh that comes off as crazy, lol. However Scientology is wacked out. I admire the dvd they did on anti psychiatry, but everything else is nuts. They actually have a group inside scientology called OSA, which is regarded as the secret service of their church. They literally will threaten you, sue you till you are bankrupt, discredit your whole life, basically leave you in a worthless position if you ever try to go against their group. Those of you that seen the cases since there beginning know what I'm talking about. They are in reality a money making machine. Running around giving you an 'assessment' and subscribe you to all kinds of courses to 'clean' you. The more money you have, the more they actually expect. They are doing brainwashing. Yes someone might be in aww because of a 'breakthrough', but wasn't that the purpose of the book, written by scientology founder Ron Hubbard, "DIANETICS"? 8.99 for the book at the time, now it's a science? These assessments dont come cheap, they range from 10,000 to 300,000$. A 'religion' founded by a science fiction writer R hubbard, who was given a 4 yr sentence in France for fraud, but evaded it. This guy had so much money, he lived on a luxury cruise ship at sea, barely never docking. Women around him like if he was god, including their stories as he sat smoking..a woman would be kneeled holding a tray to catch his ashes. These people have money, power and already political influences. The lawsuit cases filed by former members and others, mysteriously dissappear, and the judge delays the case for years. OSA does everything in their power to discredit their lives. This is really some spooky @!*%. They literally harrassed irs to get an exempt status. Need to be monitored closely or they will get out of hand soon, and claim 'religious' rights.
  7. Before someone says use 'search', I already have. I found the HowTo for timing belt only for a 96 pathy. I'm thinking theres not too much difference from my 1990 pathfinder. On a side note, the search function on invision board kinda sucks. Gives me pages of search results all mixed up, and I tried diff search variations. I have this freaking timingbelt and waterpump sitting here for almost 2 months, damn cousin is beating around the bush to get my stuff done. All the computer service calls I've done thru the years and this is the service I get, lol. I got his pc at the shop so I'm gonna use that as leverage to get the ball rolling. I was going to attempt to do myself but for a first time I'd rather let a experienced person do it and watch. Are there any specific howTos on belt/pump for a 90 path?? Reading the howto on the 96path, theres a few tips not to pull up to hard so not to break the ac line. I'm keeping the tips in my head to advise my cousin for potential problems. Is there anything else to check or do in the process of changing belt/pump? Out of the other howto, I have check other belts, check 'tensioner'? Is it necessary to remove radiator for this job? I was checking some of those guys under automotive services on craigslist to see how much they would charge to do the job, most said they will check the book and get back to me, but roughly said around 250$ to do the job. Does that sound about right? Hate to go over my cousin, but I gotta get my stuff done, my pathy is my baby. At the same time, I don't think I go with any of those people as I know NOTHING of their work/etc. Might just F up my pathy. Anyone has any tidbits of tips, pointers or whatever, please throw em at me, I will keep to tell person doing the job. NT
  8. msavides, did you use the 300zx bolts for replacement? Where can one get those?
  9. Kittamaru, how long did it take you to complete task? Did you just adjust the bolts or did the whole reindex?
  10. I have to admit, every time I see those new 2005-6 etc pathfinders, they don't do it for me..I lose my libido for an hour or so after seeing one. Aint really a car expert, but just looking at one, the shape, dynamics, etc doesn't look offroadish or rugged. If anything, they look like 'bling' mobiles. People around here have some with big chrome rims and thin arse tires. Looks like a big butt caboose... like that guy said, a grocery getter. Wow, I'm really proud of my 90pathfinder. Only complain is the gas mileage, and my lack of car knowledge, but those things will be fixed soon.
  11. Amen! Mine rides comfortable on highway in my 30mile runs. As I'm learning about cars and all that stuff, I keep in mind that I'm running 31 tires which makes accelerating a bit slow, but once I'm up at in the 55mphs, it rides good. It's safe to say, your ride comfortable quality status, will be as comfortable as all the love you put into it. If you don't maintain ride, comfortableness will suffer. One of my major complaints with my pathy is I hear outside noise a lot. I find my drivers side door almost like its not sealing on top, when I read thats a problem in some pathys. I roll the window down and kinda grab and bend towards me and that seems to help. I still would love to take it on a long ride somewhere, yeah the mileage will suck, but hey, gotta pay the price of the pathy gods

  13. Hi, I thought maybe you guys can share the longest trip you've ever taken your pathfinder on, and maybe your experience with the Pathy on the adventure (belt broke? hose broke? any other downtime, or just simply kicked arse with no probs!) Of course, the local friends with their 'lowriders' tell me the pathfinder wont make it long distances. I have driven mines plenty within NJ to NYC no probs, except a broken batt terminal. Other than that, seems like a workhorse. MPG sucks but on highway is sweeter. The most I've driven it was 80miles into PA from NJ, then back. No probs. I was contemplating a future journey from NJ to FL, Streets&Trips tell me its a estimated 1,019.1 miles, with a price of 118.91$ estimated price for gas (uhm yeah, I get the feeling it will be more) and 15hrs,47minutes if I go nonstop. Maybe this is to big of a roadtrip, as the above will have to be doubled coming on the way back. Whats your experiences with journeys on the pathfinder if any? Or whats the farthest your pathy has driven?
  14. Is that near FortDix? Wow, thats like 73 miles away. Who knows, I may take drive down there sometime...
  15. After you check your tire fluids and alternator oil, you are most welcomed!
  16. Hey Kittamaru, let us know an update on how your torsion lil project goes.
  17. Thanks man, now I fully understand. I thought torsions where for back and front. I think I'm gonna try adjusting the bolts first. I think it would handle to lift just a bit so I can stop rubbing the back of fender flare, everytime I turn, everyone jumps out the way and stares at the pathy, lol..ripping plastic sound. I was reading somewhere to PB blast them 24hrs ahead to make smooth unloosen if really stuck..gonna get some at wallyworld.
  18. Hey 88path, you mentioned 'eyeball engineer' a alignment, you think you could make a HOWTO on a homemade alignment,?
  19. Awesome! I just creamed in my coffee Couple of questions, would you recommend to reindex or adjusting torsion bolts for a 90 path stock that has seen no love under chassis? Also, Lets say theres a clock on top of a nut: ........12 9 NUT HERE 3 .........6 A full turn means from 3 to 9, clockwise? Or from 12 to 12 again? Yes, I'm confusing the competent again lol. Or is it simpler to just have the wrench at a spot, turn it, returning to the same spot to complete a full turn? You mentioned this is for the rear only HowTo. If I wanted to lift my droppy front, are there front torsion bolts I should do only? Or these are the only torsion bolts? When you tighten these bolts, how do you control what areas you want to lift, like rear only or front only?
  20. Hey did you ever reindexed or adjusted torsion bars?
  21. See that, a lot of people come forward, lol. I was talking to a local friend of mine, he bought a used chevy tahoe he said it was 4x4, I argued it wasnt, because wheres the stick for it. He then showed me a pushbutton for 4x4, I'm like wtf..lol. I'm with Kittamaru, I was attempting to go 4LO and I hear that grinding noise like a iceberg ripping thru a ship. I shut off and prayed it turned back on, lol. I'll be honest, I haven't gone 4lo or attempted it again, I just wanted to see if it works. By reading peoples post here, I conclude it works, just wont try again anytime soon. 4H works, I'll wait till i'm in some stuck situation and be bold enough like A1 steaksauce to try again
  22. Hey 88path and others who upgraded the alternator...are your alternators still running strong till this day?
  23. 10pm'ish Friday night. My first breakdown in my first ride. Coming back from dropping off wireless network card to a friend, I stopped by on the way home to pick something up, got back in, pathy would not turn on. I didn't leave anything on to drain power. I checked lights and etc. Everything turn on. Remembering when I first got my pathy, the battery terminal was screwed, the guy told me to turn them/tap them to get a contact to keep driving. It worked until I got them replaced. Months later, I guess it happened again. So I popped hood and turned the terminal a bit. Pathy almost started. I tapped on the terminal a bit and BAM, it cracked right off, on the neck. leaving the loop around the term and the rest broke off evenly. Dang, here i'm stranded on route22 in NJ. And at this time, my phone signaling its about to die, no charge left. Started to think..then up the road theres a Walmart that closes at 11pm. Figuring they probably had terminals I started walking up there. Looking at the time, started jogging,.time again, crap..running now. Got there just in time. Went to the auto section looked about the battery section, all they had was screw on side terminals. Talked to the auto guy and said thats all they have for now and left. LOL, I like when they tell me that..I usually keep looking on my own and find what I was looking for, but this time, no dice. Walmart closing in 5 minutes. Crap, been looking up and down and behind batteries and under them, maybe someone dropped one there. None. The last moments I looked frantically in there hardware section, lol, just one wall of stuff. I saw this light glowing on top of a blisterpack of 9 assorted hose clamps. Picked that up. A small pack of tiny sheets of sandpaper, a 1$ dollar screw driver, a cheap needlenose plier and a bottle of sprite. Oh, and a granola bar to energy run back to pathy. Back at pathy, I started removing cable from the half of the terminal and removed the other half off battery. I took the sandpaper and sanded around the terminal. I poured some sprite on the cable (I've heard before its good to clean corrosion on cable, and this side of battery was corroded like mofo) I brush sanded a bit the cable and the other thing attached with the cable. I then put the cable on top of terminal and took one of those hose clamp a size that fit over terminal..I pushed down on the cable on top of term, so when I pushed down, the cable wrapped on the side..I tightened a bit with flat driver then jammed in that other piece that was attached to cable on a bolt on other term. and tightened enough where it was nice and firm. Turned on pathy and fired right up. Drove home happily. Next day I replaced mcGuyver terminal with a new one. I even bought a few extra and keep it in the action packer. I read somewhere to put a light glob of vaseline over terminals to stop/prevent corrosion. Havent done it yet, I'd rather not let chicks see a jar of vaseline in glove compartment.. Moral of the story, hell i don't even know. Walmart can save you with mcguyver techniques and KEEP a few extra battery terminals in your gear!
  24. One last final question before you hit me with a tierod, is it normal electrical soldering? Like my deskbench Weller soldering tool is suffice? Or Soldering with power, like propane torch? I'm sure spraying something like Spray9 and wiping it will eventually get the oil out
  25. If there is someone here in NJ/NY that knows their stuff or at least knows basic knowledge on pathy (90path in this case), and are interested in making money for a small visit, I come to you, please let me know. I just want to take it to someone and simply look at it, the frame, torsionbars, etc..the troublespots? Or anything else, and simply tell me what needs fixing/replacing and a honest opinion if my pathy is body worthy for future upgrades. I'm located near Elizabeth and would travel about 40miles if needed, the max to like sussex, hunterdon, essex, union, morris and surrounding counties and will do NYC, and around areas brooklyn, etc. Please PM me your price to take a look at it and when are you available. Yes I'm a noobie and been happily draining whatever is left of my bank account into this pathy, new rims/tires/shocks, etc but before I get carried away would like a pro opinion if my path is good for long term upgrades. Thanks
