Oil & Fluid checking, filling and leaks 101
NaturaTek replied to NaturaTek's topic in General Forums
Ok, where would I find transfer case and rear end differential fluid at, so I can check/fill? Grease all the 'zerqs'? Where can I find those at, and what is that, lol -
Simons thought looks interesting, try that! Damn, I wonder if I have to do something like that if I replace speakers on mine. I'm using the stock pioneers on a 90 path, sounds good.

Yes, advanced noobie question So I was reading another thread about living with a oil leak. I didn't want to thread hijack so I figure let me ask a couple of questions regarding this and others. What are ways to check if you have any oil leaks? Besides moving the car and theres a blotch of oil on the pavement. Are there any slow silent killer oil leak types that go unnoticeable then one day boom? What are good ways to detect slow/silent killer leaks of any fluids/oil, if there are any ways? What are the most common leaks if any? I'm gonna assume it's basic motor oil leaks. So far in learning, I know to check Motor oil, brake fluid, and transmission fluid..oh and add radiator antifreeze. Are there any other fluids I have not mentioned that one should check?? If there are any leaks, the most common thing to check/fix are the seals? Anything on top of that could be something serious? I'm not sure if I am overdoing this, but I've been checking fluids mentioned above every sat or sunday. If one does find a leak will those walmart 'stop a leak' additive really work? My instinct tells me no, thats like a shark bites my inflatable raft and theres a roll of scotch tape that says 'stop a air leak', really won't just do anygood and the aftermath awaits you. When one does fill or 'tops' the fluids, is it generally a good idea to stick with one brand or 'whatever you get' every given time is ok? If theres anything here I have not mentioned that is crucial to this thread, please help out a noob, I'll send you a hallmark card for xmas.

Something tells me this thread with that title will have a lot of clicks, lol. BTW, wtf is a BJ? (in pathfinder terms)

"Warming up your car", is it a Myth or a Must?
NaturaTek replied to NaturaTek's topic in General Forums
How many of you path guys actually use 5/30 for winter use? Is it safe for 10w30 mobil 1 for winter (NJ.NY winter) use? -
I was googling info on oils and found a post that said: 10w40 is harldy ever used anymore (do not use it unless you have a car that calls for it, mostly older cars). 5w30 is VERY thin, so it heats up & breaks down very fast. You forgot the other option which is 10w30 & this is the oil you should use all year round (unless you are in the artic). People will tell you 5W30 is better (which it is given the choice of that or 10w40) but 10w30 is the best for normal cold winters (like New York or Chicago type). I have driven in some of the coldest of winters (-60 with the wind chills) & have never had a problem with 10w30 oil. You may also hear that you should let your car warm up for 10 mins before you drive it. This is another myth as you want to put the engine under load (in drive & in motion) as soon as you can. While the engine is "warming up" for the 10 mins (in idle) the rpms are much faster & not much oil is getting to the required parts. There may be times it is sooooo cold that all your fluids are goop, so you have to give it a few mins to warm up. But as soon as it will let you, put the car in motion. I have to admit, I've heard the warm up for 10minutes theory for a long long time. But in light of that post and other reading, is it a myth??? Or a must? I also admit, man, I start my pathy up and just go. I hate waiting and I always feel guilty of this 'warming up' theory in the back of my head. I'm pretty sure its common sense to warm up in the cold arse winter (I have not driven in winter yet, this year be the first), but if this warming up car is actually true, how much harm will one do if they don't warm up their car/svu?

What other types of SUV make good off road vehicles besides pathys?
NaturaTek replied to NaturaTek's topic in General Forums
I thought you guys were joking when you said a suzuki samurai, in fact..thought you guys smoked some crack, I'm like wtf, those things looked ****** back then, and I thought they had a recall for tipping over on street. Then I found it's use in offroading doing some googling: -
I love my pathy..but I'm wondering what other types of SUV will make a good off road ride. I'll be honest, I know @!*% about 4x4'ing, but looking at Xterras they look appealing to the eye as a great off road ride. Someone said the frame is made of titanium, can anyone vouch for this? The newest xterras look blah, but early 2000 models have that rugged look to them, maybe I'm weird like that lol. And they are made by Nissan, so it must be good. FJ cruiser looks hot too, when added with lift kits and stuff. I saw a picture of one hooked up nice on some expedition site. But dang they don't come cheap for a second vehicle. What are some other rides you guys would probably buy for a second offroad vehicle that you think is worthy? No no, you're not cheating on your pathy, that's why I said second vehicle

Question for the Mechanically inclined with Pathys...about tools
NaturaTek replied to NaturaTek's topic in General Forums
Thanks for the input guys. I did the next best thing, I told my girl to get me the tool kit for a xmas gift I did go on black friday and got some basic stuff I've been wanting. The 3 set of all black riveted craftsmans pliers 9.99, 13 piece craftsman metric wrenches 9.99. Black led rechargebale worklight 9.99. I already had a set of crafsmans pro vice grips. and a bunch of other misc tools. screwdrivers, wire cutters, etc. While waiting for the xmas gift, lol...I bought a tiny kit at homedepot, husky 'stubby' set. Dang, it has angle head adjustable ratchet, adjustable wrench, ratcheting screwdriver with a bunch of sockets, adapters and mini extenders. the handles are small and fat and 'stubby' a perfect fit in your hand. Quality is good, vanadium for 10bucks. Not a bad combo tool for tightspots. Theres a book 'automotive maintenance for dummies'... I go buy that later. -
When I obtained my pathy, I had the oil changed. They told me to get 10w something, I did. I bought Mobil 1 and they changed it. However, I was shopping for oil again, to be brave enough to change my own oil..then I noticed theres a 5w for suvs/trucks. Is this the one I should be using? Is there any harm associated in using different types (5w, 10w, etc)? My pathy has a little over 155,000 miles, is there a pretty good oil type I should be sticking too? On a side note, are there really differences in oils? Someone told me not to waste bucks on Mobil One, but go with the cheap 2$ walmart brand, because I'll be changing it anyway. Hmm, he maybe right, but if I can get a little more protection or performance from mobile one, I'll stick with it.

Quick question..will 31x12.50 swamp boggers fit on a stock 90 pathy?
NaturaTek replied to NaturaTek's topic in General Forums
That's what I'm talking about! Fck those lowriders! Is it possible to get a pathy that high? That's not even a lift kit huh? Thats some extreme stuff -
Ok, it's no 'secret', lol..but I found the list whats gonna be on sale this black friday after turkey day. LINK: http://www.blackfriday.info/ads/sears-black-friday-ad.html Tires are decent priced. I think. It says BFG ATs for 89bucks? I hope that price is for all sizes. Scroll down to 'Tools', and you can see some handy stuff for cheapy. Theres only 2 tool kits the 117pc for 79$ (which in fact its already like that, almost bought it today) and 155pc for 99bucks. Hope this help. edit: stupid me forgot to add the link, just added

Question for the Mechanically inclined with Pathys...about tools
NaturaTek replied to NaturaTek's topic in General Forums
WTF is a breaker bar? and BFH? My cousin has a cordless impact drill, a mini one, dang that thing is cool. It's like a vibrator for my pathy, she'll like it. -
Hey guys..It's me, noober guy. As you guys know I'm NOOB noobier noobiest noober. I've got the Chilton and Haynes manual for my 90 pathy. Now, is the next phase. To get my first time tool kit. I was at sears and they have a couple of good deals on mechanic tool sets this week. They have a 117 piece set for 79bucks and a 155 piece set for 99bucks. Both with that new 'laser' etch to view better. Here are my questions. Should I buy one of these kits or should I build my own? Example I'm a computer tech, and I never and will never buy a 'computer tool kit', I always piece my pc tools with pieces I like. I have a few craftsman wrenches and bunch of screwdrivers, allen keys, drill bits, pliers, visegrips etc that are in a home tool kit. All are pretty good brand tools. It seems I need ratchets and sockets. For a 1990 pathfinder, are the nuts standard or metric? Or are they a little of both? I'm looking to get my own tools to do little stuff on my own. Maybe change my own sparkplugs, tighten a nut, and who knows, change something major one day. What are the perfect tools to start little mechanic repairs with (only on my own pathy)? I'm not mechanically smart, but by looking at these tool kits, the only thing bad I kinda see, is everything is short. Nothing long. No long wrench, etc. Then again I might not need it. Also looking thru tutorials, I see a long extending tool for a ratchet to pull out spark plugs. These kits dont have them but I see you can buy separately. What are the most important tools I should buy to work on my pathy? Yes I know this is noobish, just bare with me I'll try not to blow nothing up I'll link photos later of the 2 kits I have in mind. UPDATE, here are the 2 sets I have in mind (cause they on sale and I'm cost conscious at this sec, lol) 1. 117 pc mech tool set http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_0...anics+Tool+Sets on sale for 79.99$ 2. 155 pc mec tool set (i couldnt find it from sears.com but its on sale for 99$ at my local store..i linked a googled image) Or I was thinking of buying sockets/socket wrench and start buying tools as I need/when on sale. To build a nice set. I'm not pro. but I HATE those black cases. Like the ones that came with a cratftsman jack or the one tthat came with drill/saw set. REally, I don't use them. I'd rather have everything organized in a thick nice canvas bag or a real toolbox.
-
Hey Kittamaru, Did you go the acid flush or simply drain and changed trans fluid??? Please let me know what you did. I do have a 90 pathfinder and I have NO idea if it was ever changed or not by previous owner. Kindly post results on what you've done, yes, you are our guinea pig trans experiment

Quick question..will 31x12.50 swamp boggers fit on a stock 90 pathy?
NaturaTek replied to NaturaTek's topic in General Forums
Well theres a local guy, selling swamp tires WITH rims. 31x12.50 for about 300-400$. The rims look nice and black, he mentioned something they good rims or something. He mentioned they have less than 1,000 miles on them. The rims are 6lug, so I'm thinking they might just fit on the path, and maybe I could use them for trail (if I ever get my thing worthy) and for the harsh snow up here in NJ when it comes. The damn things look monstrous hot! So if they already on the rims it come with, that means its ok to put on pathy or still might have that rub prob? Can you guys make out from the picture if they are good rims or not? -
Does anyone know of any 4x4 'shops' or service place in NJ/NY
NaturaTek replied to NaturaTek's topic in General Forums
For the love of tires, I can't find a 90 pathfinder factory manual in pdf. I already purchased a chiltons and haynes manual for my pathy. But I think I need to attend a noobie beginner class first. Yea, a class where a teacher holds up a spark plug and say "ok class, this is a spark plug", and the class goes 'oooohhhhh'. Yeah, thats me -

Whats a great way to learn light mechanics on your own? I've got some auto repair books in ebook format to learn from. -
It's me, pathfinder jedi in training again. Does anyone know of cool places in NJ or NY that has 4x4 stuff..like lift kits or cool aftermarket parts. Like a store you can go into, and they have 31 to 35 tires in stock, many brands including those 'mickey thompsons', grilleguards/bush guards on display, lights, etc, etc..just items and cool things for your 4x4, in my case, a pathfinder. I searched thru google, and found one place but number is disconnected. Maybe such places don't exist? Only online? And, does anyone know of any 4x4 or such a place where you can go and they'll install lift kits or simply make good recommendations for suspension, know ALL about modifying 4x4, and are knowledgeable in consulting to offering services for 4x4 or so? All the shops here and around me, are all about bling bling, instead of lift kits all they do is 'drop' kits, neon lights, pimp your car all chrome, low profile tires, stereos, and installing loud ass mufflers to such tiny honda cars, lol. While all that is good for people that like it, there has to be such a place for 4x4'ers. It still stuns me in who pays thousands$ to drop your car, and if thats not bad, put tires that look one inch high. I got in a few of these cars before, the minute you hit a bump, pothole or whatever you feel the pain. I seen many of these cars with damage/twisted rims for simply hitting a pothole. I will never understand the feel of that. I drove one, so damn low, if feels like my butt is sitting on the highway, that's how low it is. Add a couple of passengers, every nick or hole in street you'll feel it shatter up your spine. lol. Maybe a few of you guys offer such services for $$? Maybe I should buy me 'automotive repair for dummies'
