I also saw a post on my Instagram the other week from some company that makes Nissan truck parts (it's a big company, just can't remember what they're name is for some reason...I think they do a lot of WD21 stuff maybe?) and it said that they were selling reproduced NISMO gear ratios for R50's. Might be worth looking into if I can remember the company.

That's why. It's also a lot easier to get at the diffs than they t-case. Diff gears shouldn't be very expensive if you can find a set of 4.636's at the junkyard.

Looks much better! That little change really freshened it up. Looks line the lenses on the old ones were kinda foggy, new ones just look much better. Don't break one, they're expensive.

What did you do to your Pathfinder today?
mjotrainbrain replied to RedRider3141's topic in The Garage
It's a requirement of the park (it's privately owned). the difficulty is that it needs to be 2ft above the highest point, and my roof rack is almost 7 feet off the ground, not to mention the spare which brings it up to about 7'2". The mounting point on my bumper is 2'4" off the ground, and all I can find is 6 foot flags. I might have to call that close enough and see what they say about it. I have a flag, but it doesn't have a bolt on the end, so I need to figure out how to attach it. I also need it for Silver Lake dunes. -
3.3 engine interchangeability
mjotrainbrain replied to StevozJukebox's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Only variations in the rear end were open diff or LSD. The only other factor that changed was gear ratio; 4.363 or 4.636. -

On Friday I mounted my roof rack lower and more securely so I now feel comfortable strapping the spare up there. Yesterday I did some painting on the nerf bars (not happy; Westin was supposed to be good, but it's only been a year and a half and they're already rusting) and trimmed the fenders so the tires don't rub anymore. I now need to get an ORV flag by Saturday so I can go to Rocks and Valleys ORV Park with my 4x4 club. -

Hopefully it's just cosmetic damage. You never know until you try to fit straight panels back on, but I hope there's nothing underneath bent up. Nothing like breaking stuff to find an excuse to upgrade! -
the story of my beloved Pathfinder...hope you dont get bored..

https://postimage.io/ This site works well, it's what I've used ever since somebody on here showed it to me...I think it was hawairish? Anyways, it's super simple and quick to use as well as no ads! We'd love to see your rig, hope this helps! -
I don't know if the ones I have are necessarily better, but here ya go! For the above diagram I have been told that the hole-to-hole distance should be 4", not 4.5".

Pathfinder / Xterra intercompatabilty
mjotrainbrain replied to bushnut's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
It's too bad you left the R50, but I totally understand. It's not like a Jeep where you can just find another one easily. I'm honestly impressed that Nissan made the XTerra as long as they did, all the way through 2015 I think. And all that time it had a real frame and solid rear axle. All those years everybody thought the Wrangler and 4Runner were the last 'real' offroaders left, but the XTerra was there all along! Good luck with your new truck man. Keep on top of that rust prevention. And about what we all will drive in 10 years? If I get my act together this summer with the black spraypaint on the underside I hope I'm still driving my R50! -
So as long as most of the front end is torn apart, are you going to be doing a lot of rust repair/undercoating? Looks like you've got some big progress down! Hope it all goes together smoothly, haha.

mjotrainbrain's Build Thread
mjotrainbrain replied to mjotrainbrain's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Well then, wait until you see what I did yesterday! Looks so much better, and now it's sturdy enough that I feel comfortable putting my spare up there, haha. Still need to upload those pics, got busy with school/exams. I'll find time this weekend. -
Got these from Johann, but I believe he's about to start selling kits so you could probably talk to him if you don't want to make your own. I have the measurements for the other components too if you want them.
-
Looking good! Just a suggestion, but you should do something about the wheel weights. Maybe paint them? Otherwise a clean build with a nice stance.
-
So what next: rear end stuff (shocks, brake line, diff breather) or armor (skidplates)?

Extending brake lines, whats a good deal?
mjotrainbrain replied to CortlandCH's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
If you still have stock length shocks you'll be fine as far as brake lines are concerned. I have stock everything in the rear except Old Man Emu (ARB) coils and 2" spacers and although it's been fine I would like to get longer shocks, install the longer brake line I have laying around, and reroute the diff breather. If you're going to buy more soft brake lines, just buy the one for a D21 Nissan pickup. Supposedly a direct fit and longer than stock. -
Still needs a couple more coats this weekend, but it sure looks good in pictures! Thanks as well
-
Oops, that was a little small. I'll do it better next time lol

I think I'll be going for TOTM with this one when this month's thread becomes available.

losing my mind arguing over front struts with shop

Hmm, never knew about that naming conflict before! Bad job Nissan....surprised I haven't heard of somebody else running into issues with this before now. -
mjotrainbrain's Build Thread
mjotrainbrain replied to mjotrainbrain's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Thanks very much! I had it off this last weekend to put some paint on it and I took some pictures of the mounting points. I'll put those up later. If you'd like other pictures, I will have it off again this weekend to finish painting. My current suspension setup is: Rear: OME medium duty coils with 2 sets of 1" spacers from sfcreation.com, Front: 2 sets of 1" spacers from sfcreation.com. My front end is starting to sag pretty heavily, so I intend to remove one set of spacers from the front and add OME heavy duty coils. Hopefully that setup will give me 1" of rake and the carrying capacity that I will need when I get a winch on that bumper. If you have 1" spacers and OME stuff, you should be able to fit 32's relatively fine. Since I don't have the stock bumper they fit really well for me, I just need to trim at the back of the fenders a bit. If you have the stock bumper still you may have to trim that a bit. I haven't flex-tested it yet, but it doesn't look like I'll have to remove my flares, which is nice because on the Infiniti's the body line from the flares continues all along the truck with big plastic panels, and I don't want to know what damage 15 salty Michigan winters has done under there, hahaha. -
That's gotta be a story worth telling, you can't just say that and not share! Anyways, sounds like the swap is going well so far. Don't count your chickens before they hatch though! Good luck moving forward with the project, and hopefully the rest goes just as smoothly.

losing my mind arguing over front struts with shop
mjotrainbrain replied to cor50's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
1999 was the only split year, but that had nothing to do with suspension; suspension's been the same from '96 to '04. Check this out: http://www.4x4parts.com/c-1046938-nissan-suspension-shocks-struts.html It takes a minute to look through, but you should find plenty of good stuff in there. It is not a "50/50 crapshoot", that's for darn sure. Must have confused it with another model. I believe Bilstein only makes the shocks for our trucks though, no struts, but I could be wrong on that. Are you planning to do any other offroad mods while it's in the shop? Now would be a good time to throw some spacers or coils in there to get a 1 or 2 inch lift. Hope this all works out for ya, shops can be a real pain when dealing with non-OEM for sure, especially on "unusual" vehicles like ours! -

Two 'fun' things after school: 1. Friend of mine started his 3rd Dakota to let it warm up. When he closed the door it locked. Apparently this was an issue he knew about but only happened occasionally. Luckily I had time, so I drove him home and back to school to get the spare. 2. It was raining by the time I was able to head home, and some jack#*& in a VW Golf was on the ramp behind me. It was a long curving ramp. He nearly spun out, and I thought it was an accident. Still made me nervous to be around him since it was front wheel drive and I was rwd and having no trouble...he did it two more times, and then once we were on the highway he whipped around me, probably close to 100mph in heavy traffic in the rain...I'm real glad I didn't lose my Q today!
