Help! Cant get Crank pulley off for Timing Belt
RedPath88 replied to IndianRider's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
I was able to get the crankshaft pulley off, but by no means was it easy It was a royal PITA in fact, as mentioned I ruined one of the two pullers that I had. Although the cause of it is as of yet, undetermined. You can read my thread "Path's not well" for more information about my problem. Again, it should be a safe bet that your problem os not like mine. EDIT:Now that you have a proper puller, it should come off easily. This is the first time I have seen something like this. Perhaps it just started weak key's and progressed from there Scott -
I was searching the net for Pathy related information and found MrJims site.. Got here from there I was one of those people who lurked around for a looong time before actually joining and making my first post. I joined June '05, but was around well before that (Same goes for other boards).

*Cringles and bites tongue* Just had this same problem. Ruined one harmonic balancer pulley and the results were not pretty! But I am sure the reasons will not turn out the same -

Good vid... thanks man -
yeah iirc in WA State you are automatically at fault if you rear-end another car. Not sure about other states though.

That's good!

How many are cosidering ditching their Pathy?

LOL yeah, probably not! Although she's getting zero MPG right now (broken ) I can't see getting rid of my Path anytime soon. Due to gas prices or otherwise. -

I absolutely dread the day!

Agreed, it cost to much just to get to work (or school for those of you) and home each day!

Yeah that's what it was here the other day

Well I did not pick the engine up on Friday. As it looks now, I'm not going to be getting it. Looks like the deal is going to fall completely through. A friend found it and was helping to work the deal... he knows the guy who had it. It appears, someone else got involved and F'ed up the deal!! :furious: Pretty stupid if you ask me, it was a win/win situation. I needed an engine he needed money for a truck payment. That engine was sitting collecting dust anyway

I have done this conversion to my '83 Yota 4x4. And I found that "most of the time" I had no issues with starting on hot day's when it was wired directly to the battery. But after being unable to start the truck on two occasions (each time I was making lots of short trips), I decided to keep an extra battery in the back along with jumper cables. Soon after, I wired it to a switched power source. After having to get a jump those two times, then having to break out the battery and cable a time or two after, it made me decide that it was just not worth it. Just my experience, but be warned that it could happen. If it don't, great

Siggi dropped by and read this topic, which in turn brought some other things to mind. Things that he thought might be useful to anyone looking to install larger flares for the intent of making room for bigger tires. --------------- HERE is another picture of his truck displaying the flares... without the glare from the sun. --------------- HERE are some flares he saw once on another Pathfinder. But that's a Double Cab, so he talked to the guy about them and discovered that the fronts fit with without any trouble, but the rears he had to modify with pieces from a larger PART Although I agree with him in that those are nice looking flares and the company seems to be willing to ship worldwide, he said that the asking price was over $1000 (USD). He did not get them and I would bet that it's probably not a option for most of us either. A couple pictures of another Terrano/Pathfinder with a different design of flares on it. 38in'ers on that one Pic 1 Pic 2 Scott

That's almost tempting enough to want two! :X -
Slick, I had the same problem a while back... When I first bought the truck it would lock the doors but not unlock them Then it would come and go. Sometimes they would work as described above and sometimes not. Then one day it worked for both locking and unlocking. Couple day’s later.. nothing worked I decided it was time to figure it out, I located and tested the "relay" (of sorts) in the side panel just behind the drivers door... but it was OK. I even got a replacement from a wrecking yard… same problems/nothing fixed. So I then did some research and iirc I found the info I was looking for on the WD21Forums ( Aaron) and decided to check out the controller/switch in the drivers door. That solved the problem. Seems Pathy's have some issues regarding that item. Either it's of bad design or it was not assembled correctly... either way I found it, corrected it (the printed circuit board was miss-aligned) and I have had zero problem with the locks ever since.

Sure there's always a chance that something was overlooked. Give it another thorough look and have someone else do it too, if you can. Sometimes fresh eyes see things that other don't.

^^^I did basically the same thing on my 88^^^ But I used a couple pieces of aluminum plate bent into an "L" shape. These are mounted to the bumper brackets to the outsides of the lights.

With my 88, simply disconnecting the battery works for me. Though normally, when I do it I leave it for at least 20min (often longer) before I put power back to it. I would take glenn’s advice and start checking other things. Make sure the MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor) is making good contact at the electrical connection. Also make sure that during the installation the two metal contacts.. wires… were not damaged. You can find “Cleaning your MAF Sensor” in “General Topics -> The Garage -> How-To's” section. It’s written for 87-89’s but you’ll get the idea. And it has an image of what I was talking about above.

What about the fan clutch? Driving up hill, the engine is working harder and it's likely getting less over all air flow. Does it do it if you just let the truck sit running at idle for a long period of time? Might listen for that. Start it up and let it run, when it reaches operating temp (or soon after) you should be able to hear the difference in the speed of the cooling fan when it kicks on. If not, then that's likely your problem.

No problem... not sure why he never responded. Your right about the trucks, it’s a one piece body. In 82 and 83 (and iirc 81 as well) there were some modified by smaller shops (prior too and after the new sale). But they were not one piece. More like a canopy modified to extend over the back of the cab, then the rear of the cab was cut out. After that the bed and cab were joined to become one and interior along with seats were installed.... basically like the '84-89 4Runners. ---- EDIT: After closer inspection of some pictures of the truck, it looks like the top "might" be removable. ---- Some of them where Toyota's research for the 4Runner and others were simply locals shop conversions, independent of Toyota's efforts. Here is an '83 Toyota Trailblazer You can get 4in cut out fender flares for them, but as I mentioned earlier, they don't appear to be the same as the ones he has. However, they are probably close and are likely "workable". Personally I think I would use them as a plug, to make a mold. From there you could make a set (or multiple sets) of fiberglass flares. Anyone with fiberglass fabrication tooling skills (reluctantly raises hand) could modify the mold to make them a perfect, or near perfect fit. This of course, if any flares to be found around here did not fit good enough.
