Squeeling front end

The Front end has been sqeeking and making noise like loose belts? Solution new belts - done. Still making noise, so I changed the alternator because I heard sometimes if you tighten the brake too much it screws up the bearings? It keeps coming back, now I took it to my mech to change the t-belt, upper tension pulley, t-stat and water pump. Still makes noise, same as before and lots of dough later??

Anyone have any ideas?

Might be the ideler pully, the one top center.

I just had to repack my left wheel bearings for squealing once and while. I had just replaced the belts and heard the noise a few days later. I tightened the belts but the noise would still happen. I noticed it would make the noise when I turned left more than right. While it was doing it after a left turn, I just shut the engine off and the noised continued. Stuck my head out the window and heard it from the left front. I found the outer bearing didnt have suffecient grease. I clean and inspected them. They were ok, so I repacked them probably with more grease than what is needed and the noise was gone!

Might be the ideler pully, the one top center.

lol. that was my first thought too. possibly the A/C but i'd pop the hood and find it before shelling out anymore dough.

 

you dind't really say wheather this was while stopped or rolling.

Grimgreg - It seems to be will it's rolling at anywhere from 15 to 40 mph after driving for around 10 minutes?

Calipers not fully retracting ? There is a write up on lubing the slide pins... Power steering fluid low, pump failing making the belt slip ??

I've had a kind of dull squealing noise coming from my front end for a while, mostly just ignore it. But I listened up close and it seems like it could be coming from the a/c compressor. The a/c seems to work fine, could it be going out? The sound is always there, i.e. as long as the engine is on, I hear it whether rolling or not or with the a/c on or not. Like I said, it's more of a small annoyance so spending big money to fix it isn't real high on my list, but if it was something simple you guys may know about, I'd be inclined to try and fix it.

Crazy. I am having the EXACT same problem in my 91 Terrano. It is only happening while moving. It also appears to be coming from the front passenger side (driver side for most of you, front left). It happens during acceleration, while turning, and during bumpy driving. I can induce the problem while driving by shaking the wheel left to right at around 40kph to 50kph. I am thinking my problem is the belt or the power steering. When the engine is off, and I pull and push on the belt, it makes some moaning sounds, so if that were sped up to about 2500 rpm, it could be it.

 

I will change the belt, and do some lubing and post back on if it changed. If not, then I don't know what to do.

You can try removing all the belts BUT the PS belt, then run it for a short time. If it still squeaks or whatever, you may have found your culprit.

ball joints? i didnt know that they could be so loud but when we did ryans they were god awful loud and were a constant noise but not while it was rolling of course

Turns out that my squealing problem wasn't coming from the front end at all!!! My rear left outboard brake pad has dissapeared!!!!!!! The pads were inspected during my JCI (Japanese Compulsory Inspection, basically like CA, but 10X more thorough), and all of my brake pads were in good condition and THERE.

 

I looked at the rotor, and it has been severely worn down by the caliper's inside edge. That is what was making the grinding noise, and when I got my terrano up to speed, it was squealing. I could induce the squealing by turning sharply or shaking the steering wheel. That would make sense if a brake pad wasn't there and a rotor was grinding on a caliper.

 

I have asked a few japanese mechs around here, and i guess it is pretty common with these.

 

I have no clue how an entire pad could dissapear, but it happened.

 

If I were you I would check your drivers side rear brakes and see if there is at least a brake pad there.
