hagge
Hi! Just wanted to show you an alternative roof rack installation. It's an old aluminium rack for a Volvo 245 from the 1980's. Recycling! I think it turned out pretty nice... Not super sturdy but it serves it purpouse as a light mount right now. I will add a pair of extra feet in the middle. I also mounted two LED 42w.
ebayfish
Very cool! I've been brainstorming on how to make an xterra of frontier rack fit. Very good idea!
SpecialWarr
Does the XTerra have a step-down on its rack or is just that my imagination?
ebayfish
It does, but so does our pathfinders, just not nearly as extreme. I think it could be done with fairly minimal modifications to the rack, I just don't want to have to drop the headliner to bolt it in, but damn it would look good & give it a much newer look. nunya
theres a write up on the Xterra rack mod (and I'm sure people will chime in and just put their pictures of them mounted on their trucks), cutting down the front legs is necessary. OP, besides looking like it may need some support in the center (which you said you planned) looks like it could become quite useful

Low profile, makes use of the entire roof surface and it looks good! Very cool! I've been brainstorming on how to make an xterra of frontier rack fit. Very good idea! As nunya mentioned it's been done and there is info here on the board, so intense brainstorming may not needed And speaking of that I need to get going on installing the one sitting in my garage! jamba
Looks good, hagge And i like your sparewheel carrier too. Is it diy? Any picks about building it?
hagge
Terve jamba! Thanks! Good to see another Scandinavian here! I used 5x5cm beam, i think 3mm thick for welding the sparewheel carrier. I then used a long M16 bolt through the previously built rear bumper that was made of 10x5cm beam. For the locking mechanism i used a Biltema trailer hatch lock and a safety sprint. A rubber pad on the back door keeps it from shaking. If you want i can take some detailed pictures. I think there is a thread here how to fit a original spare carrier on a truck that did not have one from factory. If you can get hold of a carrier on a scrap yard or something... I have searched finnish junkyards, but no luck so far... I also have diy rear bumber that should be stiff enough for carrier. Biltema lock idea sounds great!!! hagge
Cool truck jamba! Is that 33" wheels? What kind of lift do you have? Did you have to cut the fenders to fit those wheels? What kind of fender flares is that? I also notice that you have reinforced the tresholds and cut of the rear corners. I have the "iron worm" in my rear corners and planning to cut them out, your idea looks great! I will post some pics of my tire carrier, maybe you can use some ideas from that. Where in Finland are you from?
hagge
I forgot to mention... I think there is a special ball bearing hinge you can order from the US that is made for tire swings. You weld it on the rear bumper.

What kind of fender flares is that? Where in Finland are you from? Hi there Yes, they are 33"s , they are biggest road legal for this. But when offroading, i can use 35"s. Lift is really moderate, few cms. Body is a bit higher. Fenders are cut, yes, and flares diy. I'm from a small village, Ruhtinansalmi, near russian border, about as north as Luleå. hagge
I'm from a small village, Ruhtinansalmi, near russian border, about as north as Luleå. That is far up north!...i'm from a small village in the south of sweden near the west coast. I'm actually half finish myself, but sadly never learned to speak finish. I saw that you might have found a factory wheel swing. Here are some pics of my DIY swing if any one else is interested. I don't have great fabrication skills, so it does not look that great, but it functions really well. Kept the full length of the swing arm to maybe add a jerry can or something. jamba
Thanks Hagge! I'm picking my carrier tomorrow. Hope it's ok condition. I have seen a jerrycan at side of wheel, that's a damn good idea too
