Guest PointGiven 2000
Has anyone tinted the rear window themselves ?? Can you do it with a single sheet ? Or do you have to by the rear window kit with the strips ? thx
BigMike
Yes Yes No if you got tint on the back you can get a plastic bag an some ammonia, spray ammonia on the tint and cover all the tint with a plastic bag. this will soften the polyester that that tint is made out of and soften the glue makin it easy as pie to remove with a razor blade. you could also remove the whole window easy, takes maybe 5-10 mins, just dont drop it! 88pathoffroad
Yep, I'd recommend removing the window entirely so you can work on it flat. All it takes is four screws for the hinges, then remove the latch and you've got flat glass to work on.
jj big shoe
Use a razor blade to clean everything off the glass. Any little piece of dirt will cause an air pocket that might get bigger over time. Also use a good quality tint. A lot of the lesser ones come out kinda purple instead of smoked. Take your time and it will look schweet.
n0cturne74
Anyone remember the Spray Tint that came in a aeresol can?!? A buddy of mine actually bought a can back in the day when it first came out...LOL What fun that crap was to clean off the window after it fisheyed, ran and dried. I not certain but is that stuff still selling? I can't imagine whoever carried that stuff is still in business! pssd
jj big shoe
I think they just re-labeled it and are marketing it as a spray-on hair care fix for bald spots.
Slick
 I was lazy and paid someone $240 to tint all my windows (except windshield of course)...but they whipped my back window out in quick time... -bounce-
hardwaretoad
I was lazy and paid someone $240 to tint all my windows HOLY SMOKES ! I paid $125. for mine, that was going with 5% "limo" tint on everything except my 2 doors ~ they got 25% or 30%, not sure. Whatever's legal in Nevada, anyhoo... I guess doing an '87 would be cheaper, there's less glass area than '90 & up... :contract:
GrimGreg
I opted to have them done on my 93, all but windsheild, limo on the back end and 35% on the front door windows cost me $200.
Mr. Pickles
$200-250 seems to be about the going rate around here (Seattle area). I don't think it necessarily matters much how dark you go, although they'll do everything with 5% for a little cash on the side if you want to risk it. My brother did that on his 5.0 Mustang. jdub
All I can say it do what's legal. My brother bought his 4Runner with Limo tint on it and he got pulled over and got a fix it ticket for the tint being too dark so he had to remove it. hardwaretoad
Yeah, I worry 'bout going into California... no tint allowed by law on front door windows at all...
Slick
hehehe..that's why I only have 5% on the front windows..and 35% on all the rest..cuz it's illegal here in Cali. Hell..I lived in the bay area when I had my Pathy tinted..now I live in teh central valley....not that it's any better...
AIIZEE
It will go on as one sheet if you cut from the defroster post to the edge on both sides of the window (cut underneath the defroster line onece film is applied. This will help the tint bend to the shape of the glass. A little heat from a blow dryer would help as well. No need to remove the window, just the handle form the lock part of the hatch. Simpler Cut the window into shape and split the tint in half horizontaly. Apply top portion with soapy water and smooth out, apply bottom half and smooth out. Done. The fly windows are the hardest to smooth out in one piece. Tinting put me through some hardtimes in my college days
