any 2001+ RE4R01A (found in VG powered R50's, Frontiers and Xterras) Will be your golden ticket.

Nissan never changed the Part numbers but the 2001+ are HD models.

Before you install the transmission you should Get a shift kit from SUPERIOR SHIFT. The kit is about $40 and provides some new seals and minor modification of the Valve body For crisp clean shifting and long life performance. Superior designs kits specifcally for used high mileage trannys to correct issues that were not adressed when the tranny was first designed.

I believe all that is correct but I haven't done the comparison myself. Go to a site like Rock Auto and look up the part numbers for different years to see if they are the same.

Also, the 90-95 manual trannys are not junk, they just have a lubing issue due to a lower fill level. There is a TSB about overfilling to 5.1 liters.

http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=2621

All they did for the later year trannys was raise the fill hole.

Also, it may be worth simply having yours rebuilt. Ask around for a quote...

When you said garbage I assumed you meant the AUTO's.

Like stated above the MT is great and never recived any upgrades (as far as I know) I fill mine thru the sifter, Less crawling that way. The original (before knowing about the TSB) lasted 190k with the fill level too low. Thats when 5th started to go and the fragments created interference with 3rd and 1st.

FYI the 3.3 trannys have higher gear ratios than the 3.0's so your rpms at a given speed will be slightly lower.

This isn't a big differance and should not deter you its just a litte fact.

So that means that I could bolt up an Xterra AUTO tranny to my 92xe ? What do you mean with HD Models? Cuz I'm planning on changing my tranny, some what sick with it

As I understand it, 2001+ models are Heavy Duty (HD).

I'm not sure what changes were made but I would assume it includes things like re-enforced gears, Stronger TC and stronger shift solenoids for Crisper shifting.

Yes, Mr510 posted a list of improvements IIRC. I don't understand them, but the point is, Nissan beefed up an existing tranny to handle 250hp instead of 180hp and it works.

I am seriously considering installing one (and a VG33) in my 95.
