Recoding or coding ignition switch and locks

Hey guys is it worth it for me to pick up a ignition switch from the jy without the keys and have it coded or just buy one on ebay with the keys already fitted for it? I also need to have all my locks coded..like passenger and drivers side and tailgate.

I have not asked the jy yet but some of those donated rigs might still have the keys and they just removed it for safe keeping.

*Deleted the duplicate thread*

Call a locksmith in your area and ask what it would cost to have them re-keyed. Combine that with the cost for them from the wrecking yard. Also ask Alkorahil what new once would cost from him (check the Classifieds>Services section)

Then go from there :aok:

I just replaced the two front locks and had them re-coded to my ignition for $30.

Worth it for just two locks IMO. If you are going to do all the locks and need a new ignition cylinder too It might be worth it to buy the whole kit from Nissan. At courtesey parts its $190 or so, and I bet Alkorahil can get it cheaper.

Thanks. I sent him a message

Can a regular locksmith do this sort of work?

I would imagine pretty much any lock smith should be able to do it, since it should be part of the training they get. it will more than likely cost more to have the mobile locksmith do it, than taking them out and to a locksmith shop.

while you are taking out/installing, would you mind taking a couple of pics for me? for some reason mine is missing the clip that holds it in place, and the part that connects it to the to the actual lock mechanism, and the FSM pic i found is worthless....

It's 50/50 that j-yard vehicles here have keys still. If you found an early 90s Nissan you should be able to use the ignition and locks from it.

If I get it all from the same pathy the locksmith can just code it from the ignition and it should work on all the locks right? i gotta ask the locksmith see how much they would charge if i take in the ignition switch to them

Im guessing it should come out off of a 90-93..I was looking at my wifes 94 and the steering column is different...is it the same ignition switch even the steering column cover is different?

not sure of the differences. but if you get one out of a yard, check the glove compartment for a sticker which will have the key code for that vehicle. you can just give the locksmith this code and in most cases they can pull up what they need to do to set the cylinders.

Nope, they are the same, I actually pulled the electrical part off the back of a 94 for my 88. There was an 02 Xterra next to it and it had the same one too. Like you said, just the column cover is different.
