Buddhahead
This has been a mind f#@k. This situation came on very quickly, 5 days ago it was all fine & dandy... today The truck started to act like it had a dead battery, very slow turning starter, I charged the battery & it started up... well ok.... but something sounded funny while cranking. Then the next day it was acting like the battery was dead again. So I pulled the alternator & it checked out fine, charged the battery again, it again acted like a dead battery, very slow cranking. Next I had the battery load tested, it's good. Now it's intermittent when I hit the key, sometimes it cranks very slowly, sometimes nothing, lights all dim like a dead battery,. The battery is reading 12.7v standing & 13.8 running. I wanted to check the relays, there is one large blue relay near the battery on the fender, that has 2 plug ins. A rectangular black box that has 2 green relays (Fuel Pump/Main) & 1 Blue relay (Check) + 2-15amp fuses (Head lamps) 1 grey relay (horn). Back near the fire wall are 2 more identical blue relays. Could a relay cause this kind of problem? Which are the starter relays??? How do I check them? So if I have to pull the starter, is it 2 bolts holding it on? How do you get to the top bolt??? Any other suggestion for getting it out??? Thanx Steve
94extreme
i doubt it's the starter since it does crank here and there.. i'd still check the battery or its connections.
87pathy
i doubt it's the starter since it does crank here and there.. i'd still check the battery or it's connections. I disagree. a slow intermitant turning starter can be caused by binding. binding can be caused by the following. 1 crap built up. 2. worn or chipped brushes 3. heat. i.e. My old ford would crank fine when its cold, but warm.. almost wouldn't turn over. changed the starter... and guess what... no more issues. get a set of jumper cables and bypass everything. try to start it by going direct fromt eh starter to the battery. If the problem still exists, change the starter.
Precise1
Yep, like 87 said... Check your battery/starter connections/wires first and then try the direct 'hotwire' like he recommended. Crap build up will do precisely what you describe, remember, it is right under the oil filter and gets soaked. Have you tried beating on the selenoid? I got a balky starter to work longer that way. If you remove it, you may want to clean it and retry it... Yes, 2 bolts and crativity. It's kinda tight down there. The starter comes straight out the front with a few twists and rotations. There is a write up on it somewhere. If you can't find it, let me know... B
edicer2
STARTER! I can almost guarentee it. MIne was like that on both my poathfinder before they went. they would sometimes start then othertimes be slow or sometimes notstart at all. ALl problems disappeared with a new one. Alkorahil
They dont rebuild starters like they used to.
MY1PATH
while your at it, look for oil arround your oil ps sensor. the seal between the sensor and the plug can fail or somtimes the sensor is loose either condition will cause oil to run down the block and into the starter. If it is the starter the oil may have been the culprit.

Buddhahead
I couldn't find a starter removal specific thread. Did you say you knew where one was??? Thanx Steve Yes, 2 bolts and crativity. Buddhahead
OK... a new twist.... I pulled the relays on the right side fender panel. Cleaned all the contacts, switched the 2 green relays inside of the covered panel. Damm if it didn't fire up like she always did..... this lasted for about a week and now we're back to same problem, dead. Which relay does what? How do you test the relays? Which are starter specific?
Precise1
Asketh and receiveth... http://npora.ipbhost.com//index.php?showto...&hl=starter That should cover things. Sorry, I don't know the relay set up as I've never had to mess with it... B
Buddhahead
Thanx..... when folks talk about "lifting the body" to get better clearance to pull the starter.... what do they mean??? Are they actually moving the body, moving the motor off of its mounts or ????? Also where is the "inhibitor relay"... hell I'm going to go get a manual and just get at it. Thanx for the help.... peace Steve
Precise1
It means that they have installed a body lift. 2 or 3" being most common. Have you dowloaded the FSM for your 94 yet? Try here or someone can burn you a CD. http://www.filestube.com/db1329cebe5cd5ee0...Pathfinder.html B
