Frame Damage - Opinions

93 Pathfinder XE

After driving home the pathfinder I bought for pennies and blowing a brake line midway home (close call), I crawl underneath to find out where the clunking was coming from - something I hadn't noticed before I bought it.

Although I had BIG plans for it, I only really need it for 1.5months of work - 40 miles a day each way with speeds of up to 70mph.

WILL I BE ABLE TO MAKE IT FOR THAT LONG? Or is this really a big risk that I shouldn't take (after I fix the brake line of course)

Secondly - repairable? (I'm thinking no)

Thanks in advance for the help.

hey buddy, welcome to the club, Mine is EXACTLY like that, on both sides. I wouldnt drive it on the road. Yes its fixable, I'm in the process of fixing mine. If the rest of the truck is in good shape like mine is, definitly fix it, if the wallet allows for that.

What kind of cash are we talking about? I'm away from home and don't have my garage/tools (I wouldn't be able to fix this anyways though...) so it needs to go into the shop. And what's the worse thing that could happen if I drove it on the road?

WOW - I just moved from ottawa to calgary (worse mistake ever) and will be moving back soon. I just need it to get my by...

Well, I was quoted around 600 bucks for mine, but I have more rot behind there. I would NOT drive it like that, because that piece is what prevents your rear axle from shifting, that clunk you hear is that thing moving around when it shouldn't be, giving the axle even more play, eventually you could loose your axle, although thats in extreme cases. If the truck is in good mechanical condition, and the body rust is minimal, I'd get it fixed, and bring her home with you. I live in ottawa myself, I think there are other members here from ottawa as well, I know of one whom I've met in person. You can't kill the engine in these things, with proper maintenance of course (timing belt)

Oh and is it broken on one side, or both???

AND I bet you that when that bar fell it took out your brake line that you speak of, thats what mine did.

and how in the hell did your truck pass a safety inspection? I'd take it back to the place that did the inspection.

Note the alberta - safety inspections don't happen all that often (I'm not realizing this is a bad thing.)

And it's bothsides, it broke clean off. I would imagine it was like this before I bough it, just somehow didn't notice it when I was looking it over. It moving around definitely broke off the brake line - it separated right at the broken subframe.

if you like living dangerously, and attempting suicide. then drive it..... if you love life and prefer to live... get it fixed. and park it until you do :crossedwires:

Well taking it on some "serious backroads" in that condition isn't any better for your pathy in its current state. Just have a local shop weld it back on, and go over the rest of the frame and make sure its solid, you can do this your self with a hammer and screwdriver, post up some pics of the rest of the frame if you don't mind.

Oh yeah, have you noticed what that bar connects to, other than the frame? IIRC there should be 2 links to your axle, because right now you only have 2 links left and your swaybar, and if those let go, say bye bye to your wheels, if at high speeds, that'll be a nasty accident.

I'm with Slick on this issue. A frame that is so rusted out it is falling apart is a lonnnnnnng way from being safe.

If you are the only one using the roads, drive it at your own risk. If anyone else uses it, you need to park it. Just imagine what will happen when a control arm rips loose like the crossmember did and the rear axle pivots sideways.... You ain't saving that situation.... Or the spring perch shears off and the body collapses down on the tire, locking it up. It will be dramatic. Warnings that something bad is about to happen? It's already given you all it will.

mws is right, because also when that happens, a lot more of your pathy will be $#&%ed up, and at that point it won't be worth fixing. Get it done or park it before its too late.

I didnt say this...

Your right :nono:

Please do not recommend improper and potentially unsafe repairs

And if you still dont feel comfortable with it afterwards, sell it! but let us know first!!;)

If your not comfortable with the safety of a repair please do not sell it too someone else without telling them of your concerns and any questionable repairs that have been made.

Thanks for all the replies everyone - it goes to the bodyshop next tuesday (Calgary is stupid and you need to book an appointment for estimates!??!?!?)

And just to let the mod know - I'm pissed off enough that it was in this state when I bought it, why would I do that to someone else? The whole reason I posted was with others' safety in mind.
