New Project

Hey everyone, last winter I picked up an 88 pathfinder for about $500. Not a bad deal, considering it has 210k miles, and starts up every time. I'm told its a rare model, since it has 4 wheel disc brakes, factory roof lights, brush guard and running boards and roof rack (Though the running boards and roof rack are gone). Anyways, I love the truck, and over the summer I'm gonna fix it up. Now to the reason for my post. The speedo and odometer crapped out on me. I'm guessing its the actual cable, but I haven't had time to actually pull it all apart to find out. Anyone else encounter this problem? Also, my alternator light and A/T temp light stay on, and they get brighter at idle, and dim under acceleration. Like I said, I havent had time to get into it yet, just wondering if anyone else has seen this before. Thanks everyone!

Nice find! The 4-wheel discs and other options you listed makes me think you bought an SE model. Those are the good ones! :D Don't worry about the loss of the running boards/nerf bars, they tended to rust out and not help very much anyway. ;)

Check your rear diff for a little orange sticker that says "LSD OIL ONLY" and tell us if you have a limited slip rear differential. That's good to have if you like to offroad. The sticker is usually to the left of the round center part and is viewable from the rear of the vehicle facing forward.

On the speedo: Pull your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) at the trans end and check the plastic driven gear on the internal (trans) side. They tend to strip out, rendering the speedo inoperative. I've also seen just the speedo unit die from a broken cog or gear inside.

Also, your alternator is shot. Don't go on any long trips. :)

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, it does have an LSD in the rear and front too I believe. Now for the VSS, how much do those go for? And I figured it was the alternator that was bad, the A/T light threw me off on that one. I hope to be posting some before pics of the rig soon, then start patching her up. Thanks

I'd highly doubt you have LSD in the front diff, unless it's aftermarket. THere was no such thing from the factory.

88's got you covered on all your other questions.

Good luck with the project! :aok:

Ah, then I just have rear LSD. Thanks. I also have the OEM Nissan Roof Light covers which I'm told don't exist anymore. I bought the truck from my boss, who has owned it since 1993.

I have one as well, I was wondering why i never got stuck in the big mud hole that all the other trucks got stuck in, untill my friend said it was because all 4 of my wheels were spinning when i floored it. I knew my truck was really rare. I'm in canada too btw. Im the third owner, the second was my dad and the first was his boss, definitly no mods.

redfinder, does yours have a sticker too? Cause the fronts will both spin if they have equal traction WITHOUT a LSD. Before I got my locker, one time I got sideways on a freeway offramp by power-braking it. Amazed me, but I guess they just both had equal traction.

Next time go to the junkyard, I'm eyeballing front diffs. :D Wouldn't that be a kick in the ass, finding one?

Nissan Canada has been known to import some weird Nissan variants. For example, on the 84-89 300ZX (Z31), only two seaters could have the turbo engine and trim package - except in Canada, where a 2+2 (four seater) was actually available.

The 2+2 Turbo was *only* available in Canada, and in limited numbers. Nobody seems to know why.

Likewise, the 85-88 U11 Maxima was front-wheel-drive only in most parts of the world, except in Canada where all wheel drive was an option. It was expensive and therefore extremely rare.

They also had very strange combinations of option availability and options packages, to the point where you'd see a base-level dashboard with the (for the rest of the world) top-level leather interior. Or vice versa. No rhyme or reason to it, either.

There is little documentation on these Canada-only cars, and nobody seems to know why Canada got these different models - not even Nissan Canada.

Look for "trailboss" pathfinders. ive only seen 2, my 89 included. my 89 had both LSD's(altho there was no visable sticker) and the other, also an 89, had the sticker. I dont know if its a canada only trim or what. my pathfinder had decals on the lower doors that said trailboss right infront of the rear tire. other path was the same way. both burgandy int/ext. mine had A/C, the other did not. at either rate, the LSD was no comparision to a lincoln locker lol
