bad gas milage

horrible! about 10 mpg. nothing is acting up except when i put cruse control on it surges on a level road.

Try changing the o2 sensors, the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, cap and rotor. Did you or was the timing belt changed yet?

so i did some research. the original specs is 13.1 mpg! what was nissan thinking come on now. im going to do what you say and hopefully it will get a little better.

timing belt is a big one. if that hasnt been done yet then i would do it. check for some air leaks after the maf and before the throttle body too.

And change the transmission fluid if it hasn't been.

no and no. i just bought it 6 months ago. the guy that had it before me was a lexus dealer mechanic so he prob took good care of it. i will do that fuel injector cleaner thing and see how old the timing belt looks. my tranny could prob use a flush too. anything else i could do?

I wouldn't put too much confidence in the fact that the previous owner was a mechanic. Someone who doesn't like their car may not take care of it whether or not they know the consequences. The guy I bought mine from lied to my face and told me had replaced the t-belt. Lo and behold it was the original at 150k.

dude if your tbelt was never replaced you shouldnt just check it. it needs to be replaced. no questions asked.

i agree with turbopath about the previous owner. i am a diesel mechanic at a truck shop and the last thing i want to do on a weekend is work on my own vehicles unless absolutely necessary.

The MPG rating for the 97 auto 4x4 was 15 city, 19 highway.

where did you get that from? i looked online on http://www.internetautoguide.com/car-speci...nder/index.html and it says 13.1.

That says 13.1 liters per 100 km.... not mpg.

 

If I am converting right, 13.1l/100 km = 18 mpg.
