  1. The gearing in the newer transmissions is not the same as the wd21. Your first gear ratio will be different.

That is correct. I should have clarified that the gearing between the vq35de tranny and the VG33 tranny are the same.

  2. i am sorry to post on such an old thread, but this seems like very important information and isn't stickied. Can anyone confirm that all VQ35 and Xterra 4wd trans are the HD variety AND can be used for replacement/upgrade? I'd like to purchase a JDM low mileage auto to install with my vg33 and mid-mount turbo in March. I originally planned to see if the stock output shaft would fit in a q45 trans to convert it to 4wd but I want this done for Spring desert fun so a used HD trans gets it done faster. Help is greatly appreciated

Supercharged Xterra and Frontier and the RE4R01A behind the vq35de are HD variety. Same gearing and with very miniscule differences. Shaft spline count should be the same. Maybe slight bellhousing differences but swap bellhousing tc and flex plate.

  3. What's the easiest way to drive the old pins out ?

A long skinny punch and a jack or blocks of wood to keep the door square. The harbor freight punches worked for me. Along with using a long 3/8ths socket extension.

You do not want the door's weight hanging on the pin. Lube the overloving piss out of them. Get some rubber hoses and cut a slit in the middle of them from one end to the other and line the door edges with it by slipping it over. This will prevent you from scratching and scraping up the paint while you man handle the door. An extra set of hands is great unless you are tall and have long arms and some strength. These doors are heavy.

Once you get the doors off and pull out the old brass hinge bushings, clean up the hinge holes with a dremel to make sure the new bushes can fit in. They may be wallowed out oblong.

  4. I haven't had one to bits myself, but a couple guys on here have done auto trans rebuilds, hopefully one of them has some pointers. Xterra transmissions are a bolt-in replacement for WD21 Pathfinders, so most info here should cross over. From what I've read, losing reverse first is common. IIRC the seal on the pump fails, reducing line pressure, and reverse requires the most line pressure so it's the first to go.

The AT section of the factory service manual might give you some idea of what you're up against.

I have done a rebuild and it's really easy to grasp once you slowly take it apart. You will need to come up with some home garage ingenuity to remove the snap rings for the clutch hubs. I used various sizes of C clamps. Look up RE4R01A on here and you will see the photos. You will need a reliable caliper to measure shims and disks, and a H gauge.

I bought my kit at rockauto and would not rocommend this particular kit as the steel disks were not the same size I was needing and the filter was not cut or stamped properly.

You will want to measure all the current shims and disks as well as take lots of pictures so you don't forgot what goes where. Considering how you have excessive debris, I would see if you could get your torque converter cleaned out otherwise you're spewing all that junk back in your rebuilt transmission.

  5. Tranny fell off my jack and went boom. Transmission fluid everywhere. No cracks luckily just some sharp edges that need to be cut filed down. I though I was going to be okay with out the straps on but it caught my header and of it went. I'm going to try again Thursday on my day off.

  6. I am a relatively new member. I searched the forums for information on replacing the timing belt, etc on my 1994 Pathfinder. One of the older posts recommended a member with username Alkorahil as a source for advice and for original Nissan parts.

I haven't been able to contact him. Perhaps he will see this post but he may no longer be active.

Therefore does anyone know of another member who is also a parts vendor that they can personally recommend for Nissan parts? Or should I not worry about that and just buy online?

    Thanks,

    Richard in SC

Unfortunately he no longer works there from I last read. You would be fine with gates timing belt kit. Rockauto has great prices and discounts codes.

  7. I have a 180° thermostat in both my pathfinder and 2001 frontier.

When I hook the frontier up to a scanner the coolant temp reads around 210° after it's so warmed up and been running a while.

The pathfinder has a Dakota digital fan controller in it and I have it set to turn the fan on at 185° and off again at 180°.

Seeing as the frontier has a vg33e could I move my max temp setting on the pathfinder upwards of 200°?

Just curious before I go and do it.

Yeah 185 seems low. I recall seeing somewhere online someone posted a graph of where the optimum temperature is for the motor.

  8. Ordered a seal kit from rockauto only find out that the copper washers in the kit are too large in diameter. One of the O rings were larger in diameter as well but I'm thinking it will work. Reused the old copper ones and hoping for the best. If not, I'll see how much it'll cost at the dealership. Cleaned up the rear main seal housing and will install a new seal tomorrow. I noticed Ed I had an oil buildup on the face of the flex plate so I'm hoping the newer seal seals it up real well. It's been a struggle this rebuild. I purchased a small power steering cooler today with some longer hose. I'll need to buy another mounting kit my transmission cooler since I need to move it over more to make room for the power steering one.

Man, I really hope it's not oil leaking out of the exhaust port....db0957289624be7396ad361868e79183.jpgc1abe108c862881a28af5b0867c45a64.jpg04c0a63da61f83482e07a3306eabdf31.jpg

  9. I have concluded the shop who resealed my transfer case didn't know the correct location of the neutral switch and ended up jamming two of the checkballs against each other. A drill and tap later, I have something that should function like it was designed to. Catch to this is I converted to 4wd and have no wiring set up or that 4x4 and neutral transfer case indicators lol.

Started putting on the timing belt again and noticed I'm missing the washers for the tensioner. A trip to the dealership and they are on order expected to arrive this Thursday.

Power steering pump will be getting new o rings and crush washers, a cooler install, and I'll be installing back on the remote oil filter. Maybe the remote transmission filter too.

  10. Welcome mate! Keep the forums alive! There are a few prominent old timers here but regardless, their is vast amounts of info here. Although photos linked to photobucket may not work unless your have a plug in for chrome browsers or you actually click and go to the actual link.

  11. the alternator checks out good, do you think it could be a weak wire leading to the alternator?

How was this tested or confirmed? Did you make sure your battery connections were secure and clean? No loose connections?
