  1. pull the plug on #1 and stick a dowel in the hole, let it rest on the piston. when it's at TDC the dowel should be most exposed. too tight or too loose on the belt. doesn't necessarily mean that it's the tensioner itself. if could be that the tension was not set properly by your dad. search around the how to's to find out the exact procedure. there is nice write up with pix in there.
  2. aloha eh? what is like 15C up there or something? lol welcome
  3. today's scare factor is: they ought to be prepared. lol
  4. hand held? not as accurate as a stopwatch and the distance already measured on the ground. the little blue markers/signs along the highways and byways are at 1/10 of a mile or sometimes at 1/2 or a mile, depending on the state and highway system. those aren't just put in the willy nilly. but, hand held is close enough. i doubt any gauge from the factory is nuts on.
  5. nah, don't even mess with the valves. unless you have to. don't take the belt off just yet. get this thing to TDC. i doubt it is off by more then a couple of teeth. if you think it is like a dozen off then yeah do what kirk said. when you get the #1 to TDC, the other head should be close so slip the belt off and just align the marks. count the teeth on the belt and mark them. then slip the belt back on, hitting all the marks to make sure it's all aligned. if your stuff is way out of what then search around. that thread was pretty good as the guy really sweated it, big time but got it done in the end.
  6. I'VE NEVER SEEN THE @!*% JUST DUMPING INTO THE CYLINDERS if it's just the head gaskets. it always mixes. if the cyl wall is cracked he's be describing other thing too but he's not. black smoke is rich so not all that bad. not that one shouldn't fix the rich condition.
  7. stopwatch and mile markers are way easier then having to involve another gas hogging party. it sure is the most reliable method.
  8. yup. 02 or MAF. and you better look harder and find that leak. any mixing of lfuids? water and coolant in either compartment?
  9. search around. there was a guy with this same issue a couple of years ago. it was quite the concoluted process for him but it's all in that thread. you will have to bring everything to TDC. good luck.
  10. that's not yelling, that's cadding mang.
  11. all those lights on at the same time, most of the time that means your alt is shot. did you check it's output actually? volt reg could be another issue but you may be right on with the N switch acting up.
  12. IT DEPENDS WHO REBUILDS IT. SOME CAN DO AS WELL AS A NEW ONE AND SOME SHOULD BE TAKEN OUT BACK AND SHOT.
  13. yeah, over 10 buck for the filter. M1 in a gallon jug was somewhere around U$25 at walmart. it surely could be more as last time i bought some oil was probably barely over 100/brl 17 grease nipples? hmm.. where? i grease mine while i drain the oil. 5min per side, tops. btw. no lifting involved but i do turn the wheels one way and then the other to be able to get to all of the steering.
  14. small leaks tend to become big in no time. one day you'll just hear the engine go kaaaaaaaaabooooooooooooom! from lack of lubrication. then you ought to fix it. hehe
  15. yeah, M1 makes a filter for the pathy. last time i checked it was over $10 though.

  17. or call the stealer with your vin and they'll tell you.
  18. if your truck had the smaller tires, (most XEs came with those) and upgrade to 31" then you can expect about 10-12% decrease in speed so your speedo would show 70mph at 77. to test your speedo, use GPS or drive a mile at 60 and use a stop watch. if it's not exactly one (1) minute then speedo is off one way or another. in my state, the radar gun speed stands on it's own unless you get the maintenance records for that particular gun and throw doubt at it's accuracy. (last time checked long time ago..) or you can get in-car camera film showing traffic which then you could argue that it wasn't you but perhaps another vehicle. also, if the cop or the prosecutor doesn't show, the case will be dropped. if it was in a small town, the cop WILL be there. pay up now or possibly, if you go to court, ask for leniency. judges around here tend to drop the speeds down so you may only get 2pts off your license instead of 4, if you're nice and they are in a good mood. if you don't have the money, definitely tell that to the judge and offer doing something else instead. community service is a common substitution. i got a rash of tickets, like 5y ago, and fought them all and didn't pay one. the one in a small town, which i was sure i'll lose, as the cop was the judges cuz, ended up getting dropped because the prosecutor from the county seat didn't make it in time. when i got in my car to leave, the prosecutor pulled up right next to me. i high tailed outta there.. the two town cops were still in the court. another time when i had no dough, the judge, and the chief of a tribe, dropped this white boy's fine to half of the original and told me to make $5/mo payment until i had it paid of. i sped on a reservation and it was out of state, so no points. hehe.. MI has this thing called "traveling ticket" or 'welcome tourists', if you pay w/o fighting, they won't notify your state nor your insurance.
