mjotrainbrain's Build Thread
mjotrainbrain replied to mjotrainbrain's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Again, it's been a while, but not a ton has happened. All that's really changed is I fixed everything that was broken when I bought it with some parts from junkyard R50's and added a Curt roofrack and extension, that so far only has a shovel mounted to it. Not sure what mod I want to get next, what do you guys think? And just to start planning ahead for when I eventually get new wheels, would anybody be interested in 5 Infiniti tri-spoke wheels with some damage to the chrome? -

Wow, the stance looks great! How much backspace do those wheels have? -
How-To: R50 Rear Disc Brake Conversion
mjotrainbrain replied to hawairish's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
I look forward to hearing how you like them as you get more miles on them, particularly on those rock ledges! This is something I've wanted to do since I got my R50, but wasn't willing to figure out how. Now I've got another thing on the to-do list! -
I have had front and rear spacers from that same seller for almost a year now, and I couldn't be happier. Definitely would use them again if I had another R50 to build.

SFD- Front Sway Bar Necessary?
mjotrainbrain replied to Snowboarder12345's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Do you have a suggestion as to how to make the front swaybar easier to disconnect? I haven't seen any products for the purpose for our vehicles. Also, are there any concerns that would come with the increased movement in the front suspension (increased chance of damage to CVs)? -
I've only seen 1 WD, and it's the only Pathfinder I've seen regularly, as someone at my school drives it. I have also seen a few R50 Pathfinders and QX4s and two of them were lifted, but I've only seen these once. That being said, I live in a city with 200,000 residents, so seeing so many is expected.

There are three main benefits: 1. Low speed means less whiplash to the occupants and less likelihood of damage to the vehicle 2. Overdrive off and low range keeps lower gears engaged, which forces the engine to rev higher, which keeps things flowing better 3. Overdrive off and low range keeps lower gears engaged, which gives more torque, which is useful in tricky off-road situations In my experience, 5 mph is still too slow for most trails (obviously speed varies based on terrain and obstacles), but I usually go in the 10-15 range. I haven't experimented with airing down yet, so others will have to chime in on that one!

For struts, I do not believe anybody makes extended ones; if you are running longer than stock coils the best you can do is get struts that are more heavy duty. I do not know their part number, but are these the Rancho shocks you're looking for? http://www.4x4parts.com/i-18981655-rancho-rs9000xl-rear-shock.html

Wow, it looks really good! Could you post a link to theexbrit's guide? I can't seem to find it. Have you had a chance to use the winch yet, to tell if your bumper mounting is secure enough? -
Recovery points + Recovery gear
mjotrainbrain replied to mickmutante's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually bent his frame out of square...do NOT do as he does, take up slack then gentle pressure! I prefer to use the trailer hitch as a recovery point whenever possible, but if you have to use the front it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to use some kind of bridle so the tow points can share the load. But again, if you're using a tow strap, gently....not like that guy! -
Yup. Other examples are readily available on YouTube.

Where are you located?

Some pics from the other day when I was playing on some fishermen's two trails down by the river. Almost got stuck because I forgot to engage 4wd...

Roof rack looks real good on it! Maybe zip ties would make a good alternative to the hose clamps. XD

ABS and ICC issues; Maybe related?
mjotrainbrain replied to mjotrainbrain's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Left the QX4 at the local Infiniti dealer for the last 3 days (the loaner car was nice!) to see if they could figure out what was wrong. The ICC issue turned out to be the sensor in the grill, which they wanted $3000 for (yes, I got the right number of zeros there! ) and they even recommended not fixing it; I guess I'll keep my eye on local junkyards. They could not figure out the ABS issue. As far as they can tell everything should work perfectly, and the best guess they had was that it doesn't work because the vehicle is not level due to the lift I have on it (so are they suggesting that if you drive down a hill the ABS won't work? I call BS), so basically that is still a mystery. I guess I'll pretend that's not a problem and just drive accordingly. This leaves no other things that are broken, so I can focus on upgrades again! -
removing rear sway bar brackets
mjotrainbrain replied to missionstreet's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
I had to remove mine once before (I was replacing the sway links; needed to bring the while thing inside and use a hacksaw) and it came off just fine. In fact, mine's a Michigan vehicle and is a lot rustier. I would think you should be fine, but of course there is always a risk. -
That thing looks awesome! Great selection of mods, they all came together really nicely. Also, welcome to NPORA!

Climate Control System Swap?
mjotrainbrain replied to mjotrainbrain's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Thank you for finding that! It will be very useful for me someday, probably not too long from now. I actually scored a navigation system like the one my QX4 came with that has all of its buttons intact, so I'm going to try that for now, at least however long these buttons last. I have no idea if it works though, since I got it out of a junkyard Q that somebody had torn the dash out of, so this was just sitting in the passenger seat...I'll have to figure it out this weekend. -

Excellent, thank you! And good luck with your other light mods, hopefully they go a little more smoothly for ya! -
LED interior bulbs blowing fuse.
mjotrainbrain replied to mickmutante's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Wow, that's bright! I think I'm going to have to try this mod, as the stock OEM lights are so dim they might as well not be there...Do these light the interior well? They look like they do from the picture, I just want to make sure they look just as good in person. -

removing rear sway bar brackets
mjotrainbrain replied to missionstreet's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
If you are really concerned about the bolts breaking off, could you just leave the bracket on and remove the upper control arms using a couple of open ended wrenches? It would take a really long time and be a PITA, but it would avoid the possibility of this issue... Maybe if you had a picture of how rusty the area is so we can get a better idea of how much of a risk it would be?
