Although mine is '91 I had the exact same symptoms. I found it to be a small vacuum hose on the back of the engine, center top. It had cracked at the end and fallen off. Trimmed it, plugged it back on the nipple, problem solved! Does sound like a vacuum leak somewhere....

^^ I concur. Getting the parts at a pick-n-pull would be my avenue but I have the tools and enough knowledge to get it done, could probably walk out the door for 50-75 bucks. On the other hand, your mechanic is going to use new, guaranteed parts as Slart said. Just lock him down on a price if that is the way you are going to go. Don't let him nickel and dime you to death during the process. It seems he is being square with you so far, just remember that quote was for parts only, not his labor, etc. the bill could be pushing 1500 bucks before it is all over.

Good going, Robyn! I am sure the only damage is the burnt components and should be fairly simple to rectify. Make sure he determines where the fire originated and see that the issue is solved.

Robyn, better pictures would help locate the cause but probably a leak in the fuel rail somewhere. Replacing the torched parts will probably fix the issue but not cost effective at a shop and certainly not at the stealership. Hopefully a fellow forum member with mechanical abilities will chime in and give you a hand. Pick and Pull can be a great asset in times like these... Did you smell fuel at any time before it burnt? Usually a fuel rail leak will give you a faint gas smell at times, mine was only at start up and when the engine was cold was was leaking at the hose coupler.

I stand corrected! I should have known that, replaced the distributor a few years back. It was actually a vacuum hose going to the throttle body. My new garage has no working lights yet so I couldn't actually trace it out until this morning. Here are a couple of pics to clarify.... Thank you for being so tactful! lol !

Had been running "not quite right" the last few times I drove it. Stalled coming to a stop sign a couple of times so I figured I better check it out. Some animal ( probably a cat or coon) had been in the engine compartment and broken the air cleaner off the cold air intake and pulled the hose off the canister for the vacuum advance. A bit of JB Weld and I bet she will be as good as new. Will know tomorrow after epoxy sets and I reinstall. Oh yeah, changed out front marker bulb that had been out for months.... Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!

Looked at it sitting in the garage. Summer weather is upon us here in NorCal and only drive when I have to haul something bigger than a backpack. 2 wheels, 50mpg, and wind in the face is how I roll.....

I would go ahead and replace the splice with some fuel rated hose and new clamps. Both should be rated for pressurized fuel system. At first it may seem impossible but push the hose far onto the left nipple and then slide it back over the right side. Don't forget the clamps before you put the hose on... (I wonder what makes me bring that up?)

Just a guess but maybe the idler pulley is seizing? Mine is getting a bit noisy and will need to be replaced soon.....

Couldn't break the bead on my motorcycle rim to change a tube so I ran over the tire with the Pathfinder... Problem solved!

Found it. It is in the "how to's" in the garage section...

Just a panel behind the glove box. I think if you search "preventing a fire" it may come up. Easy though just removethe glove box and there is a panel behind it. Remove the panel and clean out all the trash it has accumulated over the years. I sucked mine out with a shop vac after I got as much as I could out by hand...

Have you checked inside the heater airbox yet? Who knows what could have fallen down the hood louvers. A few threads on cleaning it out, you may be surprised on what you find, and possibly prevent a cabin fire. It is behind the glove compartment.
