What is camp WAMP?

Click here to read about camp WAMP

What is our role in camp WAMP?

Camp WAMP is located along the Gold Valley trail (see map below), a route suitable only for 4WD vehicles. A tour bus transports the camp participants and counselors to a picnic area in the Plumas-Eureka State Park, and our role is to provide transportation from the picnic area to the camp on Saturday. This involves loading up the campers, counselors, luggage, wheelchairs, and other gear into our rigs, driving the 1-1/2 to 2-hour trail to the camp, and unloading everything.

After that, the weekend is open. NCCX normally runs the remainder of the Gold Valley trail on Saturday, then runs the Sierra Buttes trail on Sunday. We return home Sunday evening. It's a fun weekend adventure through some spectacular scenery.

Do I need special training to care for the disabled?

No. Your responsibility is only to provide safe transportation. Each severely disabled individual (i.e. those who cannot walk or have special physical or medical needs) is accompanied by at least one counselor, who is responsible for that person's care. They take care of loading and unloading that person from your vehicle.

Do I need special insurance?

No. Your vehicle's insurance policy is sufficient. Each vehicle and driver must present proof of current registration and liability insurance in order to participate. Seatbelts for all occupants are mandatory.

What type of vehicle do I need?

The trail is rough, rocky, and steep in places, and traverses through high-altitude terrain, reducing the power output of most engines. A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle with a part-time transfer case or lockable center differential, and either low-range gearing or a powerful engine is required. One year, a stock Honda CR-V was able to make it, but it had a rough time, scraping the undercarriage occasionally and needing a tow from another rig a couple of times. A stock Xterra is more than capable of handling this trail.

How difficult is the rest of the trail?

The Gold Valley trail beyond campWAMP becomes rougher, but with careful driving and spotting, can be done with a stock vehicle without damage. Portions of the route do pass through dense brush that flanks either side of the trail, so there is a risk to clearcoat paint scratches that may require buffing out.

The Sierra Buttes trail is easy, but very steep in places. The use of low range gears is essential.

Can I bring my family?

The primary goal of this trip is to provide transportation to others. Therefore, the more empty your vehicle, the more useful you'll be as a volunteer. However, since there is a secondary purpose to this trip (i.e. our own adventure that happens after we drop off the campWAMPers), feel free to bring a companion to keep you company. But try to have space in your rig for at least 2 passengers and some gear.

Can I deduct my travel expenses for this volunteer service from my income tax?

Yes. Note your vehicle's mileage before and after the trip, and keep your gas receipts for the trip, and you can deduct the expenses from your income tax. Contact your tax advisor about deducting travel expenses incurred by donating your time to campWAMP.

Two, she's going to ride them like a pair of skis!

I think I'm going to come. I'll have room for 2-4 (depends on whether or not I'll have a co-driver).

hmm me and ashley might consider this before we head back to school..... so we also drive the kids back to their bus on sunday?

No. The camp lasts a week. Other 4x4 clubs will transport them from the camp back to the bus stop the following Saturday. The next day (Sunday), a second group of campers will be taken in, and extracted the following Saturday.

If you would like to volunteer to help on another day (as well as on August 4), contact Jay Fukushima (JFukushima@aol.com), transportation coordinator for campWAMP.

Here's his latest update:

Dear 4 x4 enthusiasts:

You may have heard of Camp WAMP. It is a camp for kids with handicaps most of them in wheelchairs. It is held at a remote campsite that requires a sturdy 4x4 with low gears - stock Xterras, Pathfinders, 4Runners, pickups work great, CRVs won't make it unless lifted.

Why am I writing you? We need your help and your rig to get the kids there, the bus can't make it.

Camp WAMP is looking for 4x4ers willing to transport kids in wheelchairs and their counselors and all their gear on an hour and a half trek to or from camp in Plumas-Eureka State Park about an hour north of Truckee.

The dates for the treks are as follows:

August 4, Saturday at 12 noon bus at Plumas-Eureka State Park - inbound - need 12 more rigs

August 11, Saturday at 10 a.m. at Hawley Lake - outbound - need 18 more rigs

August 12, Sunday at 12 noon bus at Plumas-Eureka State Park - inbound - need 18 more rigs

August 18, Saturday at 10 a.m. at Hawley Lake - outbound - need 2 more rigs

If you would like to participate, please have space available in your rig for at least 1 camper and 1 counselor and some gear. We would like to make sure that everyone that participates has a great time, so we are going to ask for a little cooperation and information beforehand so we can plan ahead. If you are planning to go, please email me so I can add you to the list.

I hope this sounds like a fun and rewarding opportunity to help those less fortunate as we are. Plus you get to share one of your favorite things to do with a group that would never be able to have that experience without you. Your reward are the big grateful smiles plus lunch.

Please feel free to forward this email to as many 4x4 enthusiasts that you know.

I look forward to seeing you up in the Sierras helping these great kids.

OK, two trucks, then. I assume two drivers as well.

Can we count on that for sure? How many people can both trucks fit?

king definitely ( i will know 100% how he's "feeling" in a week), and it will be me n dave, so, depending on size, 3 in the back. King doesn't have a roof rack, so bear that in mind. :wiggle:

i will 110% confirm when i get his motor in and runnin this week. i don't see any foreseeable issues, but put me on "unconfirmed" until i know he's 100% for the trip.

what kind if radio should i buy for this? will any cb radio from radioshack work?

Any inexpensive FRS/GMRS radio should be fine. You can get one at Fry's, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Sears, Wal-Mart, Target, or other electronics retailer.

If I can find time to go through my entire front end of my truck and re torque everything I will be able to make it. I just need to try and get off early one day this week to be able to do it. I will update.
