Niagara Falls

I know there is alot of Canadian people on this board who may be able to offer some input on a small vacation am planning in August to Niagara Falls with my wife. Any suggestions on hotels, attractions, food. I'm not even sure if I need a passport or not? Of course I will be driving my Pathy up there from NYC and wondering how long a ride it is. I'm leaning towards staying at the Skyline Inn. Any input will be appreciated.

You dont need a passport, a drivers licence & birth certificate will do (although as of Jan 07 you will need a passport)

There is a lot of things to do around there, from the cheesy (Lundy's Lane, which is all tourist stuff like wax museams) to winery tours (theres quite a few around the area), there's a few gardens and I think butterfly conservatory too... a few more fun things you can do is jet boating on the Niagara River, I did that a couple years ago, it was a lot of fun... prepare to get wet!!

Niagara is great. There is a lot to do. Lots of bars and the night scene is pretty good. We go up there from Rochester pretty frequently. The "Adult" clubs there are much better than in Roch.

From NYC you're lookin at about 7-8 hours. If you have a Passport, it wouldn't hurt to bring it, but I've never needed one to get into Canada, generally just a Drivers License will suffice. Sometimes you'll need to provide a second form of ID, in which case they'll ask for a Birth Certificate or a credit card.

As far as the touristy crap, the Lady Of The Mist is always a fun trip. They put you in a boat and go right up to the falls...it's quite cool actually. You might remember it from Bruce Almighty if you saw it.

For Hotels, we usually don't stay, as we're less than 2 hours away, but when I've stayed up there, I usually try to get a room with a view of the falls.

i'm pretty sure all the walking tunnels behind the falls are still open too, including a little observation platform right next to the horseshoe falls. they give (or maybe sell now) cool yellow rain slickers so you don't get wet. I haven't done it in years, but it was one of the most memorable things i've seen from that area when I was a kid.

I recently stayed at the hilton on the canadian side too. If you don't mind not being able to see the falls, you can get a really good deal on a single king bed room with a jacuzzi for you and the missus to soak in after a long day of walking around the park. If you're a member of the AAA, i think you can get discounts too.

Ohhhh Im glad i saw this post... your in luck my man as I grew up 10 minutes from the for of Niagara Falls. There are PLENTY of things to do in the area. But Kayaking the Gorge is not one of them since they have Class 6 rapids and the current is the swiftest in all of Canada. Skyline in is a Nice Hotel but you'll find that Most of them are decent and offer a view of the falls. Lundy's Lane is a major tourist hot spot as it offers a lot of the usual touristy things like Haunted houses, wax museums, mini put, Arcades, Fun houses, Rides and Attractions, Bars and Restaurants, Shopping Etc. Theres a Jet Boat ride which is about $80 dollarish that is WELL worth the price and is a lot of fun. I've done it myself a few times and if your looking for the BEST seat on the ride, its in the Second Row, Farthest 2 seats on the right... Its the Wettest seat there is and I highly Suggest it. Trust me. Theres also a Helicopter Ride for a little more and it takes you up and above the Falls for an arial view. There's The Made of Mist which is a Boat ride that takes you to the very mouth of the Falls and although lacking that adrenaline rush provides you with the most in your face view of the falls. Theres a Cable car the crosses above the Whirl Pool which is an interesting area further down the bottom of the falls. If your a Golfer theres an amazing Course along the Niagara Boulevarde along with a Butterfly Conservatory a little father down. If your a Gambling man, Check out the Casino. They have 2 of them there but the newest one built is a nice attraction in itself. For Restaurants, I suggest you make an appoint ment up on the Skyline tower as its a Revolving Restaurant with a Great view of the falls. Call ahead a few days and request a Window Seat. preferably for middle of the week as weekend will be booked solid for a month at least. If your into the outdoors then This is where I can help you most. If the both of you want to see the Niagara Gorge the Way it was ment to be seen then I suggest you head down the Boulevarde past the second Cable car to Camping spot with a Set of Metal Stairs that lead down into the Gorge. If you pick up any Local tourist map the Metal Stairs will be marked on it. Theres Great Hiking down in that area and if you head Left at the Bottom of the stairs, that my Favorite trail. Follow it down and walk along till you feel you want to go back up. The Trail system Goes all he way to the Maid of the Mist Ride which is MANY MANY MANY miles away. So go for as long as you feel up to it. If your like me though, You can walk for a good 2-3 hours and arrive at the Heart of the Class 6 Rapids which is a wonderful display. If you dont feel like walking all that way to see those rapids theres a vendor you can pay that will take you down an elevator from the main street and you can spend however long you want dowwn there. But in my opinion, its second rate as you have to stay within Designated boundries, and not Free to roam up to the Very edge of the monsters Eddies. Theres plenty of other things in the area that are well worth your time, The Vineyards in the Niagara On the Lake area where most of Canada's Premium Wines are made and theres even a tour that takes you from Winery to Winery to sample the different wines till your a staggering drunk. The area also has a Tremendous amount of history with War dating back to the 1812 period Where you'll learn about how us Canadians Kicked your American Asses when you Tried to Invade... You Bunch a Bastages. :P You Can visit Fort George in the Niagara Area which is located at the mouth of Lake Ontario, or if you Follow the Boulevard South for a LONG way, you can See Fort Erie, Which is where the Niarage Starts from Lake Erie. and where i grew up most of my life. And since we are on the Topic of Battle Grounds, Check out The Sir Isaac Brock Monument which was Erected in his honor since he was the general who strategy and leadership stopped you bunch of Bastages from actually being successful in that battle, even though he was killed in the early part of it. You can climb up to the very top of his Monument Via a Staircase inside which is available to the public. Theres a Horse Racing Track down near For Erie if your into that as well. And for something Not so Ordinally, If your into Geo Caching, there are a TON of spots in the area as well, all of which are very note worthy places to check out. So as you can see, This is just a Bit of the attractions available and there are FAR more then that. If you can think of something inparticular that you want to know more about, feel free to ask and I'll do what I can to help you both out further. Have fun

If you go up along the canal, you may be able to see the Worlds Biggest Hard Rock Tunnel boringh machine. 14.4Meter diameter. Built buy the company i work for. Unfortunately I have not had the pleasure to work on that project, but hope to get up there next month to trouble shoot the computer system.

Thank You all for the input, especially the lengthy one. It would of took me days to research all of that so I do appreciate it. I may go with the sheraton fallsview hotel instead, more money but it's suppose to be really nice.
