ok quick question, as you guys probably know i changed the drive belts on my pathy when i did the t-belt etc. so now after the truck has been sitting when i start her up a belt squeals for like 1 second litterally now the noise is not what is troubling me i just dont want them to be too tight or loose how do you guys guage the deflection, the haynes manual says about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deflection i thought that i was right on but am not positive i will recheck tomorrow, does a squealing belt usually mean to tight or to loose not sure. :type:

hmm if it does it for like 1 sec then stops and u have the belts within the deflection you might want to check out the idler pulley if ure sure the belts are tight...my buddy had a rodeo and on damp mornings it would squeal 1 good time when it 1st cranked up then it woudlnt do it anymore...just a thought

I just checked deflection on all the belts and they are in within range 1/4 to 1/2 inch, i checked the idler arm and the power steering pulley and all seem fine not sure what is going on could it be new belts haveing to be broken in?

i'd still say its the idler pulley possibly the bearings starting to rust or something...it took them about a year to find out thats what was wrong with his b/c they replaced everything except for that and finally replaced it and the start up squeal disappeared...

but other than that i have no idea what it could be

Well i will give the belt dressing a tie, i do not think the bearings in the idler arm are rusting because this only started after i put the new belts on this past week it never did it before?? and i have now determined it only does it on cold start up after it has been sitting for atleast eight hours after i run it once it does not do it anymore, i dont know i am stumped i am going to keep checking the deflection every day.

Belt dressing is designed to conceal problems not fix them.

That's wrong. It's designed to help the belt get properly broken in. It's suppose to be sprayed on ALL new belts, it's just one of those things that nobody does.

I just changed ALL my belts and no squeeling like a pig. Honestly your belts might be to tight and the torque is making it squeal. You say when the belt gets hot and expands it doesn't squeal.

John Boy I think you might be right. I am going to try to loosen them up just a little if that does not work i will start by spraying belt dressing on one belt at a time hoping to narrow it down to which one of the three it is. Other than that i have now idea problem is finding time to do it i have been working a ton of hours to catch up on some work and just have not had time to do anything at all. Oh and John Boy about the pics of the honda sorry i just have not gotten around to it. I dont have time to do anything anymore it sucks really bad.

Ok so I was thinking about it alot so right after my last post i went outside and loosened up both main drive belts not the power steering belt I could not see if that fixed the sqeal becuase we just drove it like an hour ago and once it has started it does not squeal until it is cold so i will update again in the morning.

update us definitely. i think you'll need to still tighten them.. lol :P

never had anything squealing when too tight.. it seems to me nissan liked the belts tighter then haynes specd.. mine are loose now and they make noise. i'll change one tomorrow and tighten the rest up and i'll also let you know.

The squealing is comming from a (glazed ?) pully on one of the components (alt, PS, etc) that has a lot of inertia and/or could be badly worn on the revolving axis. Once the belt heats up and grips while the unit is picking up speed the squeal goes away. Only takes a second...

and thus the belt dressing ;)

I had the same problem. Loud squealing at startup for like 10 seconds, or until you redlined it to stop it. When you dropped to idle speed while driving when it's cold outside they would squeal too. The belts were too loose.

WAVEY Ok update: After my last post i was ready to go to bed, but I have a little bit of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) so even though i have to wake up at 4:30a.m. I still went back outside yet again (it was 11:15 p.m.) after I loosened the two main drive belts and started thinking then even though I know I tightened the power steering belt pretty tight, I figured I should check them all again. Sure enough the power steering belt was loose.... So I tightened it up pretty darn tight, making sure all the mounting brackets etc. were also tight then I went to bed. This morning just before I left the house I hopped in and started the truck and there was not squeal!!!! sounded perfect. Anyway I am waiting for the wifey to call because she will be using the truck today and I will find out if the squeal is definetely gone or not. I feel dumb for tightening and loosening the other two belts so much because my ignorance told me that the power steering belt was tight enough. Once again another lesson learned.

Good to hear no more squeal. usually a loose belt will make a squealing noise. In my industry some of the larger fan motors wiil squeal the belt because of all the torque and when you said the belts were tight it lead me to believe maybe there were TO tight. anyway glad it worked out.
