a/c problem

Recommended Posts

My a/c went to crap about a week ago. I turned the pathy on with the a/c for about 5 min, then got the familiy into the pathy to go shopping and then I saw some mist fly from the driver side of he hood and thought the radiator went to hell. Turned around quickly to inspect and as soon as the I popped the hood open, i smelt the freon. now I don't know if it's a hose or the compressor is screwed up. What could have caused this. Isit possible for the a/c condensor to clog?, if this is even possible? I'm going to have it checked by a guy I know. I really hope it's not the compressor cause it costs $300.00 brand new from checkers. Or i can go the bone yards and hope to find one that works. i really need the a/c cause it really sucks to drive around here with no a/c, it friggin gets to 115 easily here in AZ, Vengeful can vouch for me! I hate taking my family out in this heat too.

If you check around you should be able to find one for about $200.

Whatever you do, if you have to crack open the system don't forget to replace the filter/drier.

I wouldn't try to guess what happened, just take it to your friend and see what he comes up with.

could be a number of things, but if yer "lucky" you got a cut/hole in a line rather than the compressor going out on you. good luck and let us know what happens

The A/c is got to be the most PITA thing to repair because it takes forever to find the problem. Most mechanics will put dye in the system to find a leak, if it's indeed a leak. Yes it could be the compressor, or O rings. I gave up on my AC but i could living in NY, we only get 2 months of HOT weather.

slick, yeah..

johnboy, i worked on 3 last month and you pressurise the system you can find the leak pretty easy.. removing the lines is the pita part most of the time becuase of all the bends in them..

solid, if your buddy has access to one of those A/C service machines you'll be good to go.. they are automatic and they check the system...

compressor maybe it if the hoses aren't leaking.. never heard of one go yet on a pathy.. i am not on any other pathy boards though..

Yep, got a black light? The dye is usually flurecent.

At least yours leaked under the hood. When mine went it was the part by the fan under the dash (I get parts and pieces names confused)and blew freon out the vents  .

Well i finally got it fixed on wednesday. i took it to a a/c specialist and said it was a valve that was f'ed up. he told me that the reason this happened is because the e-fan i got in the pathy right now is not pulling enough cfm's to cool the a/c condensor, and it caused a valve to rupture and leak all the freon. He told me the fan is enough to cool the motor, but recommended me to install another one that will blow air to the condensor. So basically set up the fan between the grill and the condensor. So $50 later and about 3.5 hours later, the pathy was blowing cool fresh air again. Good thing i still have the old fan so I'm going to install it and hook it up to the compressor.

Hey, thanks for the update.

Always good to know what the end result was.

Interesting about the electric fan.

I'm guessing if anyone is worried about their system not running properly (or even if it is) can take it to an A/C specialist and have the pressure checked out.
