Is it possible to swap a r180 to a r200 front

Recommended Posts

yes is possible.... catch: expensive

you pretty much need to change everything from the left hand locking hub all the way thru to the right hand locking hub

i looked into this a few years back, it just to turned out to be way to expensive.

Hi Dan,

yes I am thinking of the same complete front diff swap to a V6 R200. I am just sick of waiting for someone here in Perth to write-off their V6 but only wreck the back half and leave me a good front.

Hope yopu have a few more V6's in the wreckers yards over there.

Have you found any other vehicle with a R180 LSD as a rear diff. I was wondering what lives under a Nissan Nomad van. Several other Terrano parts are the same ?

Good luck

Geordie

cheers for that...so it must be better to get a LSD for my r180.

will diff internals from a rear wheel drive r180 fit inside my r180 front diff??

Cheers dan

Should, just the same as the 300z internals will fit the other. Not, sure, just an assumtion on my part.

Good news and bad.

On the Weekend I have been searching through diffs at a Subaru-specialist wrecking yard. The r180 diff does indeed exist in the rear of several Subaru Impreza, Forester and other models with a LSD in the sports and limited versions.

However, I could only find LSD centres with 22 to 25 splines in the side gears. The Terrano r180 has 27 splines. This might exist in the higher powered Subaru SVX but as the guy at the wreckers said, they are as rare as rocking horse droppings.

Will keep looking.

possibly a dumb question :hide:

could you swap out the two side gears & two spider gears?

be interesting to see how different in size they are

just fyi: 4cyl paths have r180's as well, well mines does anyway!

Yes you could swap the side gears from an older model 25 spline r180 into a Terrano 27 spline r180 but only from an open diff not a LDS. In the LSD, the side gears are part of the LSD clutch so can't be swaped for non LSD gears.

I have thought of fitting a 25 spline r180 Subaru LSD but then I would have to fit the 25 spline axle shafts to the diff and they have a smaller diameter on the bearings and oil seals into the diff housing. Too much trouble for a setup that is not any stronger. I might have to get out the welder soon.

SW,

naa that’s not stupid at all. I only recently found out just what is inside a LSD when I removed mine. It is a pity that there are just so many different versions of the same diffs. Makes compatibility bloody difficult.

Dan,

any luck with your diff search ?

I am just about to swap the diffs for lower ratio 4.875 from a newer Terrano 1994 model as I am also fitting new steering gear with Jeep ball joints, V6 CV's, V6 hubs, slotted disc rotors etc.

But I still haven’t found what I am looking for (LSD R180 front).

sorry for sounding completly moronic, I'm still new to the whole lsd and diffs. The purpose of trying to swap a r180 to a r200, or get a lsd in the front is to get more traction  What i do know is that a lsd is better than an open diff, cause both tire spin at the same time, as opposed to one tire, at least for the rear wheels. so when you engage in 4x4 does that mean that there is only 3 wheels that are pulling the truck?, of course supposing that you have a lsd in the rear diff.

All the older Subaru LSD's such as the XT turbo etc are R160's so they are probably no use. The Imprezza diff is also deffinately an R160 as I've had one apart. At a glance R160's and R180's are hard to tell apart as the dimensions are so similar. This may account for the different number of splines you found, Geordie.

Here's an R160 compared to an R200...

The R200 is huge in comparison to both of the smaller diffs and may not even fit in the front of a Pathy. The diff centers cannot be swapped into different casings (i.e. R200 center into R180 case) so you would have to use the R200 casing. All the diffs are different widths so you need to have axles of the appropriate length to fit. R200 are the longest of these. It might be possible to use the inner CV joints from an R200 equpped car on the Pathy shafts?

I don't think R180 LSD's are very common at all. Generally, amongst Datsun racers, it either the R160 or the R200 that's used as it's really all you can get. Most of the OEM R200 LSD's were viscous diffs which present problems of their own and probably wouldn't be all the useful offroad but it might be a cheap way to get some kind of LSD in there. With a VLSD you need to use at least one of the axles that comes with it as it has a special double spline.

If an R200 will physically fit then there are a number of LSD options. Cheapest of all is a factory VLSD from a late S13 or S14 or if you can find one a plate LSD from a late Z31. Kazz are probably one of the cheapest aftermarket LSD's. I bought a Nismo GT-pro last year for my drift car and although it's pretty trick I don't think it'd be worth spending the extra money on one for a Pathy when a Kazz will do the job just as well. This of course is assuming an R200 would physically fit!

Datsunman, thanks for the useful info and photos.

I think I will have to just keep on driving the old Pathy as she is and save the twin air lockers for the next 4x4 (a bigger Datsun). I am heading off in a week for a 3000km 4x4 trip to the Pilbara region in the North of West Australia. So I have to give up on diffs for now and get the rest of the Pathy into good order.

Cheers

Geordie
