exhaust mod question

Not sure if any of you US guys can help as I am sure you are totally regulated when it comes to vehicle exhaust, but here goes. I am planning on running 2.5" pipes down each side, leaving out the cat converter into a performance muffler and 2.5" pipe from there to the rear. It is legal for me to remove the cat converter. Question is will it effect the CPU as I knoe there is information being relayed to it. I am sure the cat converter is stuffed from all the mud I have been through here in NZ.

I'll still argue that dual exhaust is unnecessary for a 3 liter motor, especially with 2.5" pipes, not to mention hard to route. Just seems like extra cost and liability to me. Regardless, The cat doesn't talk to the ECU, just the O2 sensor. Make sure that is in it's proper place and functioning, and you should be good to go.

What he said, AND the fact that in my eyes you'd be an ass to trade a Cat Convertor which is LAW for very good reasons, like trying to reduce the amount of Environmental Impact the BILLIONS of vehicles running around the world has, all for a few extra horsies. Buddy, Global Warming is becoming a pretty SERIOUS problem incase you haven't been watching the news for like the last 15 years. Everyone needs to do their part if we want to at least slow the bleeding process. And in case you dont think that your little vehicle could make that much of a difference consider this. -study- Within the last 300 years,(5-6 generations) the start of the industrial age, We've managed to change the world from its rich, pristine, unaltered circle of life that has been funtioning perfectly for millions of years, into this global nightmare where Species go extinct every minute, Water is unsafe to drink, Air Quality becomes increasingly worse, and all of which will most likely never repair itself. So long as man lives that is. Now in todays times, most of the world's industries are past the Coal Burning Production stage and perhaps your not aware that 80% of Greenhouse Gases are produced by vehicles, particularily older vehicles WITHOUT Cat converters. Anyone that would rather get a few extra horsies in this way, PURPOSEFULLY, is a complete a total Environmental Terrorist and an Ass in all regards. :furious: No exscuses. so... At any rate, there's plenty of really good Companies that produce very good Cat's that can still get you some power without completely ignoring your OBLIGATION to the Environment :aok: . Sorry if the comes off as harsh, but someones got to stand up for Mother.

I'm no engine builder, but I remember hearing something about back pressure relating to torque. If you eliminate too much back pressure, you might not get what you're trying to accomplish. I agree with P1, dual 2.5" pipes is a bit overkill for that motor I think. I'd send and email to Jim Wolf Technologies or Spencer Low Racing and ask them about it before I went through the trouble and expense.

Ive always thought the exact thing, My buddy put a 3" exaust on his little 4 banger yota and it lost about 10lbs of tourqe. Forget two 2.5" on that pig of a V6, and at least get a high preformace cat.

@!*%, sorry I asked. I knew you were over regulated, but I have been to an exhaust specialist and this was his advice. The truck has been lifted and the reason for twin tubes is to tuck it right up out of the way. I have ripped off three exhausts in the last 18mths. As for trying to save the earth, forget it buddy, it is all over, this is the final act!!! I think it a bit rich, a lecture from somone residing in the wealthist country, consuming the most resources, and producing the most waste. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones! ;) thanks jj big shoe, your advice was most useful.sorry, forgot you too Duffman.

and now, a serious response. I recently redid my entire exhaust. I put on Thorley headers, high flow cat, and flowmaster muffler. Alot of people suggest 2.5" piping, but I still think that is too much. From a flow perspective, the headers have a 2.25" outlet and with that in mind, I choose to pipe the rest with that diameter. By not having a drop or increase in piping size, flow through the system has been ideal, with no real drops or increases, resulting in good flow of gases, without any drop in performance. Overall the system has performed far better than stock (obviously) without any hesitation or major dead spots in the powerband.

Wealthiest? Not exactly. Highest standard of living? Yes.

Consuming the most resourses? Not on your Life. Country to export the most resources to other Countries? Ratioly, Most definitely.

Producing the most waste? Off by a long shot but definetly needs to be looked at more seriously considering almost everything purchased can be recycled.

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones? Depends on whether I know if no matter whats thrown at me will actually have a chance at breaking my house. In this case, *picks up some stones*

I personaly do my very best to ruduce my share of waste. 90% of my waste goes to the curb as recycling and the 10% that is not is due to the fact that the Manufacturer was negligent in making a recyclable material for packaging. I'd say that probably the worst thing I do is drive this Pathfinder and even with that I make sure it's emissions are the best I can expect from a 91.

I'm not trying to come off as a aggressive a$$hole and certainly not looking to make an enemy, but seriously, people need to at the very least recognize there is a problem and they may be able to help. That's all I ment.

Calm down People.

bundyboy, Dowser is Canadian, not American...

While I agree with Dowser, there are many people in this forum who don't run cats. Lets not get excited by 1 more example.

I agree with you B. I don't agree with running with no cats, but any rant against it anywhere, let alone on this board, isn't going to solve the problem. It has to be a global initiative, and unfortunately, there aren't enough people willing to help solve the issue.

Not only that, but we all drive gas guzzling SUV's here on this board, so none of us are saints.

wow.... quite a lot of environmental drama for a group of people known as nissan offroaders. wouldnt that imply that every one of us burns fossil fuel for recreation? hmmmm......

disregarding the environmental politics and focusing on the question at hand.......

it is possible to lose power by over sizing your exhaust as has been mentioned above...... i would reccomend not only an exhaust specialist but a specialist who knows your motor's needs as well, seeing as you are trying to employ a unique system. perhaps dual pipes with a smaller diameter would alleviate the torque-loss issue. who knows, but im sure whatever route you take the board would be interested in your results.

peace to all

so your from NZ, correct, with a population of 4,107,128

and here in here in Florida (U.S.) theres 17+ million

and you say we are to regulated, is that a bad thing

and are you trying to be on par with the U.S. with its pollution, that could be kinda hard considering that theres 227,314,778 more ppl in the U.S. then NZ

then you say

wow.... quite a lot of environmental drama for a group of people known as nissan offroaders. wouldnt that imply that every one of us burns fossil fuel for recreation? hmmmm......

so we should stop are lives and lifestyles so you can a country with a small population in comparison to some of the biggest can make as much pollution as the bigger ones

actually, i said that..... and i'm not bundy from NZ. and it was just an observation, not a judgement. i have no idea why any of these people drive a car that gets less than 20 miles to the gallon, and has extremely high emissions. i'm sure they all have a reason and i don't care to judge if its valid. i just here to find support for maintaining my vehicle.

then do what I did... Thorley headers and single 2.5" pipe (with cat and Flowmaster 50 series) out like this

so you drive a pathfinder also i would imagine, and whos to say the ppl who drive pathfinders dont have a second vehicle that has better MPG, and arent we all here for mostly the same reason, so i dont get why you would say, "i have no idea why any of these people drive a car that gets less than 20 miles to the gallon, and has extremely high emissions", um what do you drive again, and you may have a second car with better mpg, if so great

Amen! We drive some of the worse MPG SUV's ever made.....getting 15-17 MPG in stock form perfectly tuned up and California Smog legal.....that's SAD! I don't think a handful of people (Compared to # of car owners in the world) running without a CAT is is that big a deal....My house Air Conditioning unit that raises my electricity bill form a measly $67 a month to $600 in the summer! That can't be real efficient?

Not trying to piss anyone off, but has anyone heard Dennis Lear's song "i'm an asshole"? It's hilarious!

Welcome back transworldmoto !! I fail to see that you started the thread, much less comment other than to request deletion. WTF ? :P

 if you can have 1 more... :D

In my defense, I have driven the truck less than 7000 miles in the last 14 months. Truthfully, normally it would be more than that. Still, my project car gets almost 30mpg and the bike has averaged 45mpg so I think I'm fairly gentle to the environment. :aok:
